The woman’s partner and stepfather to the girl spoke with NBC4’s sister station Telemundo 52 and said he believes the mother’s struggles with her mental well-being drove her to kill her daughter.


“With passive bipolar disorder and the depression of potentially being unable to become a legal resident, all of this drove her to do what she did,” the stepfather said. He wished to stay anonymous. “I’m sure she was out of her mind when she attacked the girl.”


He added that Graciela tried to take her own life the evening her daughter died.

How sad. If she truly had mental health issues...many people don't know how to begin to help those who suffer from depression. I've seen so many people posts about being depressed and people respond, "You're so strong, you've got this. I wonder if she was under a doctor's care and if there were any previous incidents of violence.

Many years ago, a young mother climbed into the tub and cut her wrists. She was worried about the new changes coming to TANF welfare benefits. She was worried how she would survive. She survived. I wonder how she and her family are doing now. I share this to say, worrying about things you can't change can be detrimental to your life, especially when it feels like it is the end of life as you know it, and you can't see any happiness past that moment. I'm hoping mental health support services are available for others who share the same concerns as this mother.
