That's what I'm thinking too, that he made a spectacle of himself at a party of his parents' professional peers (as well as friends) and he upset his mother and embarrassed both his parents. That's my guess. That would be a reason for Rob to have an argument with his son that got physical.

Tragic in so many ways, including that Rob was a 78yo man.

I am curious to know about the timing of the murders—I am guessing that it occurred in the early AM hours of Sunday following the public incident at Conan O’Brien’s party. Certainly, it’d be easiest to attack and kill two individuals with a bladed object while they were sleeping in bed, as opposed to when they were up and alert and moving about the house, capable of calling for help or even of attempting to flee.
Given that the murderer may have still been living in his parents’ guest house, as he evidently was for some period in the preceding years, I picture the family returning to their residence post-party, and then the elder Reiners turned in for the night while their miscreant son just waited in the guest house for their lights to go out before springing into action.
In addition for the tremendous sympathy I feel for the Reiners’ other children, I also feel badly for the Reiners’ friends and colleagues who must be grieving deeply—in particular, I worry about the emotional toll this will take on the wonderful but quite elderly Mel Brooks, longtime BFF of Carl Reiner and, I presume, a close friend of Rob and Michele R. as well. I don’t know if my heart could handle the loss of another true mensch and giant of American culture on the heels of this abysmal week of world events.

i had to google the word “nepo-baby”. It’s someone who benefits from family connections. Sadly it seems the movie project might’ve not been the success it was presented as in terms of solidifying a father-son relationship. I suspect Rob Reiner was somewhat of a perfectionist given his professional success. The risk to a perfectionist is doing too much in order to avoid blaming themselves for their child not living up to their expectations.

My thought are with Romy who apparently recognized her brother was ‘dangerous’. How difficult that must be, to recognize a dangerous situation but being entirely powerless to prevent it.

Was there a struggle when all 3 were awake and this was spur of the moment not planned? Or did the son plan ahead - planning under the cover of darkness - to sneak in and stab them while they slept in bed?

If I understand the timeline correctly, the confrontation occurred at the O’Brien party on Saturday night with the Reiners departing after/as a result of Nick R. making a scene. I imagine upon returning home, one or both parties might’ve opted to “cool off” alone in their home rather than continuing to spend the rest of the evening together.

Makes me wonder what is the ''right thing to do''. At one time I think it was more common to kick your kids out of the house at age 18 and let them sink or swim.

It is really hard to have parents who suck up all of the oxygen in a room constantly. Just living with people who are amazing, larger than life. It is like, you either have enough strength and self efficacy to do your own thing. Or give up, and be a complete and spectacular screwup.

It isn't the parents fault. And it is really hard for people who are so successful to acknowledge that they have such a screwed up child. They keep trying to "fix" it. And the adult kid, resents it even more. Such a dysfunctional dynamic.

I think we can narrow the timeline a tiny bit. Romy the daughter discovered them at 3:30pm on Sunday, but the masseuse came by and rang the doorbell/knocked at 2pm on Sunday. So they were killed sometime between when they left the party on Saturday night and before 2pm on Sunday.

Not necessarily. Per that article, he wasn't observed to have any blood on him when he checked in at 4am. So maybe he checked in, then left, went to the Reiner home and committed the murders (ie 5 or 6am) and then returned to the hotel to clean up. Then obviously left again (unless that's where he was arrested)

The blood in the hotel room could’ve also been his own from a suicide attempt.

I took the "trail of blood" to be what was found "later" in the hotel room, since there were statements of no visible blood when he checked in. The language isn't totally clear, so I guess we'll wait for more info to be sure of the timing. Plus the coroner's report may have a narrowed time of death too (maybe).

I picture the son attacking his father, and his mother physically trying to stop him, and in the process of unsuccessfully trying to save her husband, she too is stabbed and also lost her life. Speculation only!
