Just heard the Los Angeles DA give a press conference. So it seems California brought back the death penalty, though it hasn't been used since 2006.
But California does not carry out the death penalty.

And he apparently made no attempt in the hotel to clean up or wash and conceal the blood. As he hadn't checked out, I wonder if he was planning on returning?

No he left it very obvious with blood, was that intentional/ and he covered the window with bed sheets? WTH?
I wondered if he was gonna try to disappear for a while and wanted it to look like the murderers got him too.? ( drug debt?) Wouldn’t take police long to figure that out but it could have bought him some time , enough to blend in with the homeless.

I keep thinking about How when compared to the actor in the doc” being Charlie and the host said you seem more mild mannered. Nick said “ oh I go crazy” almost like he was bragging a little. Rob said he could get heated too sometimes. I bet it often resulted in a power struggle. I bet some of it was about control for Nick. He couldn’t beat his dad at anything else, so he wore him down instead.
I agree. It seemed to me he enjoyed getting attention for being rude, talking about being crazy, and his drug use and homelessness.

I feel like it shows how erratic he was.
Drug use - particularly meth - can cause paranoia which would explain the bed sheet over the windows. But, honestly, after murdering his parents and leaving the scene he had a right to be paranoid.
He may not have had a plan, per se, but maybe panicked when he realized he was leaving blood all over the place.
But, the hotel clerk said he didn't appear to have blood on him or wounds at check in so I guess anything is possible at this point.

The clerk not seeing blood has made me wonder about self harm while in his room. But then later he is out walking around like nothing happened so you are right anything is possible.

Certainly I'm not the only one who is going to immediately think of the famous country singer, every time I hear this lawyer's name.

It seems likely that this whole crime and aftermath was disorganized with no planning and no staging .

I'm sure his defense will argue that he was not in a coherent frame of mind.

The fact that the daughter who found them put LE onto her brother instantly told me there were signs before this that he was dangerous.

It was linked further back that years ago, when living in his parent's guest house (presumably the same one as recently), he went ballistic and destroyed a tv and other things in the room when told he'd need to leave due to not staying sober. Definitely a warning sign of violent tendencies.

Could you please link to where you got this info, or is it up-thread? Just wanting to read it for myself.

And the feeling of entitlement and immaturity IMO.

[Why is this article text crossed out? If it was just by accident, edit it by hitting the strike icon again and that should cancel it.]

I guess the poor parents had no idea how far he could really go with his anger.:(
I read the violence was meth induced, as many drug violence-related crimes are. Yes it happens a lot.

There are posted articles upthread (sorry that time does not allow me to search for them at the moment) which give this information.

I believe this from the New York Post has most of the info:

I guess it isn't possible at this time to know what the truth is regarding the conflicting reports of an argument at the party:

The 32-year-old suspected killer checked into The Pierside Santa Monica hotel with a credit card around 4 a.m. on Sunday — just hours after he got into a bitter yelling match with his legendary Hollywood director father at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party, sources told TMZ.
Source

And this version...

The person close to the family was not in a position to dispute that account, but said that Rob and Nick Reiner did not have a heated argument and that the episode was being overblown. The intensity of any conversation that might have taken place between father and son may have been misinterpreted, the person said.
Source

These same sources also show discrepancies between whether or not Romy suggested to LE that she suspected her brother:

Source 1:

When the paramedics arrived, the person said, Romy Reiner told them that her brother lived on the property also, but she did not suggest to the authorities that her brother might be a suspect, as some news outlets have reported.

And source 2:

They were found by their daughter Romy Reiner, 28, who told investigators that he “should be a suspect” because he’s “dangerous,” sources said.

Just trying to piece things together here... I was wondering where a 1st degree charge came from. Am I correct to think that Nick checked in to a hotel (not covered in blood, because that wouldn't happen) and then went and murdered his parents, returning to the hotel afterwards? Thus, he planned to have the hotel room to flee to?
