Counsel Jackson has withdrawn as counsel of record for Nick for reasons provided to the judge in chambers. The public defenders office stands ready to step in as counsel for the defendant. For this reason the arraignment has been continued to February 23, 2026.
OK, that surprised me! I wonder why since he's handled a lot of high-profile cases? Is this client a bit much? Me thinks yes.

Pursuant to the law of every State, every defendant is not guilty.

Until proven.

No bombshell.

But what is a bombshell is that IMO AJ didn't know he was out of a job until today.

Unless the anger is an act.

But it seems real.

JMO
He did seem angry and maybe like you said, he just found out he wouldn’t be paid and no longer working on the case.

Yeah, I am thinking if it was just a matter of finances that could/would have been handled in open court with a filing suggesting NR is indigent. The fact that it was handled in chambers and not in open court suggests some other reason to me. Whether NR has been uncooperative to the point that Jackson cannot work with him or some other undisclosed reason such as a conflict of another sort remains to be seen. I wonder if he has ever represented one of the doctors who was treating NR for instance?

ETA I didn't get anger from AJ. I got emphatic. JMO

Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner’s family have spoken out after Nick Reiner‘s did not enter a plea and his lawyer stepped down.

“They have the utmost trust in the legal process and will not comment further on matters related to the legal proceedings,” a spokesperson for the Reiner family said in a statement to the New York Times on Wednesday, January 7.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge on Wednesday delayed Nick Reiner's arraignment in the killing of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, after his high-profile defense attorney asked to be replaced by a public defender.

Judge Theresa McGonigle agreed to attorney Alan Jackson's request during a Los Angeles Superior Court hearing where Nick Reiner was expected to be arraigned and enter a plea 3 1/2 weeks after the beloved actor-director and his wife of 36 years were found dead with stab wounds in their home in the upscale Brentwood section of Los Angeles. Jackson did not say why he wanted to leave the case.

Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene then took over as Nick Reiner's attorney, and the judge delayed arraignment until Feb. 23. During his brief appearance, Reiner spoke only to agree to the delay.

As I watched AJ on court steps, I couldn't help but notice how closely current cases and the overlap with recent cases might influence viewers. Movie about Alan Jackson and Karen Read....this Saturday Saturday Jan. 10...tune in

At a press conference after the hearing, Jackson said that while he was removing himself from the case, he continues to back Nick's innocence.
'What we’ve learned - and you can take this to the bank - is that pursuant to the law of this state, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder. Print that! We wish him the very best moving forward.'

Hmmm.

Well that's surprising.
Really thought the siblings would use every last dollar of their inheritance, or whatever Nick has in his accounts (?) to ensure a mental hospital and not prison ?
Or a light sentence ?
And that the atty. A. Jackson would want this case for the notoriety, even if it was pro bono ?
Imo.

'Nick, 32, appeared behind a glass screen in brown jail garb with a shaved head,
staring blankly through proceedings
and occasionally letting out a chilling grin
and looked directly into the packed Downtown LA courtroom."

Emphasis mine.
Well said.
Both are good points !

I'm leaning more towards the former suggestion.

Just as a matter of interest, if a client had the means to pay for a private lawyer would they be entitled to a public defender?

Maybe NR is sane enough to refuse to claim insanity.

JMO
Yes, that occurred to me as well ?

However, IF he is found NG(b.r.o.)I ; could he be set free ?
Imo.

Doesn’t his family/siblings have access to money/estate to pay for his legal fees?

I assumed they did, and they'd use it to help Nick ?
He is their brother after all -- and afaik, they still are supportive of him.
Imo.

Am looking around for footage of Alan Jackson's recent address to the media...

Found it :

Eta : Again with A. Jackson mentioning how very, very complex this case is.
Imo, yes and no.

Yes; with considering past diagnosis and treatments or failures therewith ?

No; in that it would appear a son who was loved brutally slayed his own parents and did it by himself and with no remorse or regard for his surviving siblings !
Savage act and afaik Nick knew what he was doing and was able to successfully conceal the murder weapon, among other evasive actions.

Yes it's not as cut and dried as that, but just thinking out loud after listening to the now former atty.
Omo.

No one can enter a plea of NGRI on his behalf if he objects!

He is the same person who (allegedly) murdered his parents. Volatile, entitled, impudent. He may think he's the smartest man in the room even when the other person in the room is a formidable defense attorney.

I'm not being facetious -- he may fire ten attorneys before ultimately representing himself. He wouldn't be the first.

Hhhmmm, interesting turn of events regarding Jackson withdrawing.

All the credible news sources when we first heard about the Reiners (and posted way above somewhere) said Rob’s worth was $200,000,000.

This makes sense to me, and in fact I’d think he’d be worth even more. He’s been in show business for 50 years; he acted, he directed, he produced and I’m sure he also wrote, though Spinal Tap was mostly improvised.

In addition to whatever he was left by his famous father Carl. Plus Michele’s earnings as a photographer. Also, whatever Rob received in residuals from “All in the Family.”

This makes me ponder—-did the other siblings first decide to pay for the best representation and then changed their minds? Or maybe a dispute among the children about this issue?

Or maybe they were, or some were, afraid that if Jackson were TOO superlative, Nick could actually go free? No prison, no mental health facility? Then they’d have to fear for themselves?

Obviously I’m just spitballing. I’d be on the side, though, of NOT using Rob and Michele’s well-earned money to defend someone who slit the throats of my parents—-brother or not. He’d no longer be my brother, as far as I’m concerned.

Or instead, maybe Nick decided he didn’t like Alan Jackson. Didn’t like his strategy or maybe just didn’t like his face or something.

Just my speculation.

Exactly. If he had the means to pay for a private attorney, he wouldn’t be able to have a public defender appointed for him. IMO it’s all about the money why Jackson resigned.
