CA - Pacific Palisades - 30,000 People Ordered to Evacuate From L.A. Wildfires #2

  • #81
Pets are interesting, in their response to a home fire. We had a Siamese, who ran toward a fireman, and clung to him like a little monkey, and would not let go. They gave him oxygen and he was fine.

People would not expect that response to a home fire by a cat. But he knew that person was there to save him.

I once lost a home to a fire, and it is a surreal experience. To own nothing, but the clothes on your back. There is a period of shock, where you just do things automatically. And I felt a lot of anger, towards people whose homes and lives were fine.

It takes years, to really recover. My own experience.

Sixty nine year old Arthur Simoneau has been named as a victim of the Palisades fire. He'd just returned from a skiing holiday when the evacuation order came in, and decided to stay to try to protect the home he'd built by hand. He'd been a risk taker his whole life, an early pioneer of the sport of hang-gliding.
The L.A. fire victims: Who they were

Evelyn McLendon, 59, has been named as a victim of the Eaton fire. Evelyn's family were evacuating together from multiple houses, in multiple cars, and were heavily focused on the elderly grandmother and young children. They barely made it out and thought Evelyn was behind them in her car. Later, after the fire passed, they returned and found her body.

All Los Angeles public libraries have N95 masks available for those who need them.

Little follow up about the man whose dog was missing for five days and then found safe - apparently both dogs only survived because a firefighter went and busted down his door as the fire was approaching. One of the dogs was saved then, but the other had fled, and was found days later living in the ruins of his neighbour's house.

Brush fire burning near homes in Jurupa Valley, Riverside County

Maps launched to help show home owners whether their properties have been damaged, lost, or unaffected by fires in areas still restricted

Table showing containment percentages of the fires

Cultural institutions across LA are offering free entry and events to people impacted by the fires, especially families and children whose schooling has been disrupted.

Small brush fire at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar fully contained.
Somehow, visiting the La Brea Tar Pits doesn't sound very appealing right now since the main exhibits are outdoors- with the horrible air quality. Nice thought though...

I was just telling a friend of mine, that I hope people in LA who have indoor pets prioritize grabbing their pets when they flee over taking valuables. I know that I would. I'd give up my passport or photo albums to make sure that my dog was safely with me when I left.

This week, a specialised team will start looking for a potential cause of the Palisades fire.

Officials emphasize that they have not determined what started the fires, and an investigation will probably take time since the fires are still active. A specialized team from the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which is leading the fire investigation, will begin processing the scene in the Pacific Palisades this week, according to the LA Times.

"Holding a briefing with federal officials at the White House on Monday, Biden said the federal government is covering most costs associated with the fires for the next 180 days, but that Congress will need to cover additional costs to rebuild Los Angeles."

Kathy Kohner Zuckerman, the real life inspiration for Gidget, joins the ranks of celebrities who have lost their homes.
(Article is paywalled, maybe someone with a subscription can paint a picture of the article beyond the title.)

A surfer from the age of fifteen, Kathy's father wrote a book based on her exploits that spawned the film franchise. Now eighty three, Kathy still surfs to raise money for charity.

The Super Scooper pilots are amazing .... flying down to scoop up 1600 gallons of water in less than 12 seconds, then flying back up without incident. We have already seen how wonderful they are in then dumping the water strategically on the fires.

'Black Men Falsely Accused of Looting While Evacuating Wildfire'

"A video showing two Black men carrying items out of a home during the California wildfires went viral this week, igniting accusations of them being looters. Critics of the premature accusations labeled them as rooted in racial bias.

The video of the men carrying bags of items away from a fire and a TV out of the house has gone viral on social media. One user, whose post on X, formerly Twitter, has 3.5 million views, commented that "the usual suspects are looting again." A Community Note was appended to the original post.

A community note on the post said the footage was from KTLA news and the people in it were a homeowner's family and friends.

Laura Miers, who has nearly 70,000 followers on X, shared a screenshot of a post accusing the men of being looters and criticized people spreading the false footage. Other users said people making the assumption that the men in the video were looters was an example of racism.

Tariq Nasheed, a film producer and internet personality, shared the video and wrote on X that "degenerate online suspected white supremacists are falsely accusing black people who are helping their neighbors move their possessions to safety as being 'looters.'"

Open Source Intel, an X user with over 300,000 followers, apologized for sharing the video after learning that the people were evacuating their home and weren't looting.'

The amount of traffic still on that major road directly in the path of the fire is making me really nervous.
Cars had pulled over to sight-see.
It was mentioned that over the road are Ventura's govt. building(s).

Looks like they finally shut it down and only fire trucks on it now. Good. Of course there's the fire, but I was worried there would be accidents if the smoke got too thick for drivers to see. They don't need that on top of the fire itself.

Article wasn’t paywalled for me, for some reason.

What a delightful person she is.

Story synopsis:

In her youth, Zuckerman was a real-life surfer girl who inspired the “Gidget” movies, TV show and a book.

She and her husband lost their home, but were safely relocated to a temporary rental in Santa Monica.

She appears to be facing her new reality with all the pluck and positivity of the Gidget character we’ve known from the shows.

Duke’s Restaurant survived, where she’d been employed for many years, and they contacted Zuckerman, telling her as soon as they reopen they want her to return as its “Ambassador of Aloha”, where she lit up the place chatting with customers and pointing to her photos of her in her teenage surfing days.

On Monday, she was getting her nails done—another way to help her stay upbeat in the face of loss.

Many others in the surfing world have reached out to help her and her husband.
She is so grateful for them all, and said she does not fear the future.

I had wondered why they hadn't used them the first night of the fires. Turns out that they were grounded because the winds were too high to fly safely.

Thank you for the summary!

You get a certain amounts of free reads, locked to your IP, before it wants you to subscribe. I've just used up all my free reads for there and a bunch of other news sites collating links for the thread. Some sites won't even let me access their fire liveblogs anymore without paying. (I'm looking at you, Sydney Morning Herald!) Eh, it's fine, they need to make money and I can get most things from free access sites like the Guardian and ABC News Australia, but every now and then I find something that's unique to a specific source that I can't access.
