"President Biden announced Thursday that for the next six months, the federal government will pay for 100% of the disaster response costs from the wildfires destroying neighborhoods across the greater Los Angeles area. The president also said he'll be asking Congress for more funding to help.

The 100% disaster response coverage from the federal government for the next 180 days is an increase from the current 75% the president previously allotted, and more than the 90% Mr. Biden said California Gov. Gavin Newsom requested. The damage is expected to be one of the most expensive disasters in California history. Three fires are still raging, the president said, and 179,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes.

Congress may need to pass supplemental funding to buoy rebuilding efforts, and the president urged Congress to "step up."

$150 BILLION IN DAMAGE?

They get a dollar an hour extra if they're actively fighting fires. That's it.

From California Department of Corrections:

Depending on skill level, conservation camp incarcerated fire crew members earn between $5.80 and $10.24 per day, paid by CDCR. While assigned to an active emergency, incarcerated fire crew members earn an additional $1 per hour paid by CAL FIRE, regardless of skill level. During emergencies, crews can work a 24-hour shift, followed by 24 hours of rest. For example, for one 24 hour shift during an active emergency, the lowest skill level would earn $26.90 per day. They are paid during rest periods, as well.

Camp participants also earn time credits. Most incarcerated fire crew members receive 2-for-1 credits, meaning they receive two additional days off their sentence for every one day they serve on a fire crew. Camp volunteers who work as support staff, but not on a fire crew, receive day-for day credits, meaning they receive one day off their sentence for every one day they serve as a firefighter.

Good to know about the time served credits, either I overlooked that or it wasn't in the article I linked yesterday.

The pay still sucks, and their training and experience should count towards getting employment on the outside.

From California Department of Corrections:
Working a 24 hr shift is more than concerning, no less fighting fires.
How is that even possible when firefighting?

It's dangerous as hell.

And if they're injured, there's no safety net like there would be for someone employed, with health insurance. They get whatever care the DOC is willing to give them.

It's actually common for CA firefighters to do 24 hour shifts (every other day/48hrs). They are typically not fighting fire that entire time, it is interspersed with rest time.

"Sources told DailyMail.com that a resident called 911 to report a male attempting to set a fire at the 21700 block of Ybarra Road [Woodland Hills, CA] at around 4.30pm.

The suspect was arrested and taken to Topanga station."

People are being urged to keep their domestic animals indoors, as wild animals are fleeing into the suburbs right now.

(Your pets should be indoors anyway, out of the smoke.)

I've seen big fires my whole life, since I have always lived in a country where every Summer lots and lots of acres burn, but I've never seen anything like this, everything in Pacific Palisades has been burnt.

How is the fire in Hollywood Hills? That can get bad really fast. Oh, and any info on the Getty Villa?
Re: the Getty Villa

"Fortunately, Getty had made extensive efforts to clear brush from the surrounding area as part of its fire mitigation efforts throughout the year," she said.

No artwork, galleries or archives were damaged from the fire and no staff members were hurt in the fire, she said.

A NCAL News crew put down their cameras and helped a desperate woman rescue her chickens from being burnt alive.
