Oh no -- I'll check the docket! Grrrr.

ETA: Seems the 10/20 hearing was continued and the next scheduled event on 10/26 is a plea hearing. Could a change of plea be coming???

Looks like it! Guess he saw the light... wonder what kind of plea deal they are giving him? Lindsey got 15 years to life.

And thanks for the new info.

A federal judge on Monday sentenced a father, who faces murder and child abuse charges in the 2020 death of his 11-year-old son, to 15 years in prison for sexually exploiting a girl at his California home in the months before the boy disappeared in Placerville

As the Placerville Police Department investigated the death of his son, law enforcement seized a digital camera and other digital devices. Investigators searched cellphones and found evidence that Piper secretly recorded videos of the underage girl.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Roger Yang asked for Piper to serve 15 years on parole once he’s released from prison. On Monday, Yang told the judge that Piper has said he was in “a spiraling family situation” that led to him secretly recording video of the girl, and he’s facing charges in the pending El Dorado County murder case.

U.S. District Judge William B. Shubb sentenced 38-year-old Jordan Thomas Piper to the required minimum sentence of 15 years in prison, which was recommended by both his defense attorney and the federal prosecutor. But they disagreed on how long his parole should be.

Shubb scheduled Piper to return to his courtroom June 12 for sentencing. Piper then would be returned to El Dorado County, where he continues to await prosecution in his son’s death.

@Niner -- as an FYI for federal cases and sentencing, take note JP plead guilty in federal court on March 20, and was initially scheduled to be sentenced on June 12 -- about 2.25 months after his plea change.

In Federal cases, sentencing generally follows about 8-10 weeks after conviction and/or entering plea change.

In this case, he wasn't sentenced until 7 months later!

A father accused of murder and child abuse in the 2020 Placerville death of his 11-year-old son, Roman Lopez, unexpectedly changed his plea Thursday and was convicted in the boy’s death.

A preliminary hearing to determine whether 38-year-old Jordan Thomas Piper should stand trial as charged initially was scheduled to begin next Tuesday morning in El Dorado Superior Court. But that hearing has now been vacated, according to online court records.

Instead, Piper appeared Thursday afternoon in Judge Vicki Ashworth’s courtroom and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Roman’s death, online court records show. Piper remains in custody and is scheduled to return to court Nov. 21 for his sentencing hearing. CBS 13 first reported Thursday that Piper had switched his plea to guilty in the murder case.

Late seeing this thread...
It's just a "same verse, same as the first," type thing.
One little boy, one little girl, etc., etc. Only the names and locations change.
They do it because they can, and the "why do it" eludes me. Some may have been abused when they were children; some are drug-addled; some do it because they can do it. No excuses are good enuff. It also seems that step-children may indeed be at risk more than a natural child.
So glad jail/prison is housing them them -- and please, please let there be no early prison releases. <sigh>
Just dammit.

Good to see you here @borndem . In a nutshell, it's a case of another vulnerable child that fell through the cracks of a strange family that collected children across the country. However, Roman happened to be the biological child of Jordan (not Piper's son) who was living with his father and stepmother while his mother was deployed (Soldier mom returned home disabled and has since died). I hope the additional 7 children these parents left behind are safe and being loved:

At the time of Roman's death, the child was living in a home with the Pipers and seven other children whose ages ranged from 1 to 17 years old. The family had recently moved to Placerville and had only been in the house for a little over two months before Roman's death.

Roman was reported missing in January 2020. He was found dead hours later in a storage bin in the basement of the family's home, and police said at the time that his death was suspicious and authorities were investigating. Both pleaded not guilty.
