The plea deal prevented the judge from assigning concurrency.

In the end, both adults got 15 to life.

Wow... Judge Ashworth was brutally honest! From the quoted link:

1/4/24

A Placerville father was sentenced to a maximum punishment of 15 years to life in prison for the murder of his 11-year-old son.

Jordan Piper was sentenced by a superior court judge in El Dorado County Thursday after pleading guilty in October to the second-degree murder of Roman Lopez.

[..]

Authorities said that although an autopsy revealed no obvious trauma, Lopez was found to be “severely malnourished and dehydrated at the time of his death.”

Lindsay Piper pleaded no contest in Lopez's death in May 2022. She was sentenced to the maximum possible punishment of 15 years to life in prison.

Jordan Piper’s sentence was the result of a plea agreement between his defense and the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office.

[..]

During Thursday’s court proceedings, nearly a dozen family members and friends read impact statements in court via video call, as many live out of state.

Piper also appeared Thursday via video connection from a federal prison in Michigan where he's serving a 15-year sentence after pleading guilty in a separate case for sexually exploiting an underage girl he secretly recorded.

[..]

Several requests were made by family and friends of Lopez that the judge rule Piper should serve consecutive 15-year terms instead of concurrent terms. Judge Vicki Ashworth said she couldn't do that per the terms of Piper's plea deal.

[..]

[Judge] Ashworth addressed Piper before the conclusion of the sentencing hearing saying that the court wouldn't share parting words of “good luck” and offer hope that he can be rehabilitated.

Instead, she said it is her hope that he thinks of Roman, every single day he's in custody.

"I hope that his memory, quite frankly, haunts you," Ashworth said.

When Jordan Piper's sentencing last November had to be rescheduled to Jan 4, 2024, I wasn't aware that this was more than a zoom issue, and that about 10 family members were waiting to give victim impact statements, and his mother and other family had traveled from Michigan to CA to attend the hearing in person.

Seems a week before the hearing, JP was was transferred from a local federal facility to a transfer station in Oklahoma City as officials decided where he would eventually be housed in the federal system.

On sentencing date, Court staff, attorneys, and officials spent roughly 45 minutes Tuesday afternoon trying to get ahold of the facility where JP was then being held, and the U.S. Marshals, but could not get ahold of anyone.

I think of Roman's mother Rochelle often, and glad they were at least reunited in death-- they needed each other. MOO

11/21/23

KCRA 3 crew members in the courtroom could see loved ones of Roman Lopez, prepared to give victim impact statements during the sentencing Tuesday, visibly upset and crying when they learned of the communication issues and postponement.

[..]

"We’re going to make phone calls, we’re going to talk to the officials where he’s at right now, and where he’s going to be transferred to," Linden said. "We’re going to have contingency plans. We’re going to make sure this delay doesn’t happen again."

“Justice has been served for Roman,” said El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson.

“Both his father and stepmother are now being held accountable for their incomprehensible cruelty, abuse and death of their child and will spend a very long time behind bars.”

Roman's stepmother Lindsay Piper was also convicted of 2nd degree murder and sentenced to 15 years-to-life in prison.

[..]

According to investigators, Roman, his biological father Jordan, stepmother Lindsay and seven other children had recently moved to Placerville around the time of his death.

The case was initially investigated as a suspicious death. Police didn’t find anything in their first search of the home, but they found Roman’s body inside a storage bin in the basement during a second search.

An autopsy found no signs of obvious trauma, though it showed Roman was severely malnourished and dehydrated when he died.

Jordan and Lindsay were arrested in Feb. 2021 and charged with child abuse, poisoning and torture.

It wasn’t until Oct. 2021 that the pair were charged with Roman’s murder, and it wasn’t until May 2022 that Lindsay flipped her plea on a charge of second-degree murder from ‘not guilty’ to ‘no contest.’ She was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
