If they weren't targeted, as @chimpface noted, it could be an employee, someone who knew which theater the security cams weren't on. Someone who just wanted to kill people who slipped in and out in the darkened room, someone who knew how many minutes in the onscreen gun battle happened in the soundproofed room.So if there are 18 screens in the complex, someone could feasibly have walked out of any of them and into where the victims were feasibly.
Do we know where they were sitting? If near to rear or exit, it would make task probably easier.
Are we thinking that the victims were targeted, or it was some random in connection with the film's subject matter of following 'a group of people who attempt to escape from the United States after an insurrectionist movement continues committing crimes and murders nationwide after the Purge's ending'?
I feel like they had to be in the rear of the theater, if anyone sat behind them how could they miss it?
I guess they were so afraid of a worse mass shooting, as soon the film was over and the lights came on and they were discovered, they emptied out the entire complex without checking anyone. Maybe even starting before the cops got there, who didn't even know a shooting had happened until after they arrived.
“At some point, the employee or employees walk inside the theater to conduct their clean-up or walk through and that’s when the 911 call was placed,” Corona Police Department Cpl. Tobias Kouroubacalis said. “[They said] that there was an unknown problem, somebody was bleeding, there wasn’t very specific information given.”
