I'd agree that 1:30 pm seems more likely to be correct. VVNG link says this:

[Mother] said Ethan did not show up at work Thursday night, and Sophia did not show up at her work on Friday morning.

Although it is possible that they were visiting Wednesday night, left after midnight, he was to work Thursday night.

I also think the KNBC piece had a typo. The initial VVNG article cites Sophia Edwards's mother Michelle Edwards as saying they left Newcomb's Ranch at 1:30 pm.

It would take just one second really to get distracted by something and go off the road. I also wonder about an animal suddenly jumping out and crossing the road, and the reaction to swerve to avoid hitting it.
