Explosion at fertility clinic in Palm Springs, at least one dead

Palm Springs Police Department told the Desert Sun said the explosion at about 11 a.m. local time in downtown Palm Springs, which was felt as far as 2 miles away, appears to be a car explosion by the American Reproductive Centers clinic. Lt. William Hutchinson said that there appears to be at least one fatality.

"Everything is in question, whether this is an act of terrorism," he said on the scene.

LOS ANGELES — One person is dead after a car exploded in Palm Springs, California, a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation said.

"This was a powerful explosion," the source said, describing a very large debris field and damage to multiple businesses nearby.

The identity of the deceased person and their involvement in the explosion is not yet clear.

There is no information yet on injuries or a possible motive, including whether a nearby fertility clinic was targeted.

I just heard about it on ABC News. MHO: The clinic was not targeted, and if it was, it wasn't because of what they did there. We'll have to find out who did this, and why. As of broadcast time, no other explosives were found in the region, and the cold storage rooms were not damaged.

The act was being investigated as a possible car explosion, said two law enforcement officials briefed on the matter who insisted on anonymity to discuss preliminary information from an ongoing investigation. One of the officials told AP that investigators believe the person who died is likely the person who set off the explosion, but cautioned the investigation is still in its early stages.

He told The Associated Press in a phone interview that all of his staff were safe and accounted for. The explosion damaged the practice’s office space, where it conducts consultations with patients, but left the IVF lab and all of the stored embryos there unharmed.

Aerial footage showed a burned-out car in a parking lot behind the building that housed the fertility clinic’s office space. The blast caved in the building’s roof and blew a wide debris field across a sidewalk and four lanes of the street on the other side of the structure.

Just curious as to why you believe it wasn’t targeted? Ty!

“It’s kind of hard to see.” “It’s hard to tell if it was just the car.” “The explosion was so crazy, it blew out the glass of this liquor store. Look at this liquor store. Oh, my God. Look at this, dude. Damn. Crazy explosion. Glass and everything everywhere.”

“This explosion was significant.”
“Make no mistake, this is an intentional act of terrorism.”

“I really have no clue what happened.”
“Thank God today happened to be a day that we have no patients.”

Authorities were still working to confirm the identity of the person who died at the scene. Davis would not directly say whether that person was the suspect but said authorities were not searching for a suspect.

Davis also said four people were hurt but provided no additional details on the severity of the injuries. Authorities were also investigating the possibility that the explosion was being livestreamed.

Nima Tabrizi, 37, of Santa Monica, said he was inside a cannabis dispensary nearby when he felt a massive explosion.

“The building just shook, and we go outside and there’s massive cloud smoke,” Tabrizi said. “Crazy explosion. It felt like a bomb went off. ... We went up to the scene, and we saw human remains.”

The media outlet said law enforcement had recovered an audio recording by the man that laid out his motivations, which included philosophical objections to being born without consent.
