CANADA - 3 dead including gunman, 12 injured in Greektown shooting, Toronto, July 2018

  • #281
All a gang member has to do is go to Detroit and buy the gun himself, then head back through the tunnel to Canada. When Canada Border guard asks this if they have anything to declare, say nope. Do you have any guns or weapons, nope. Welcome back to Canada, and they are on their way back to Toronto with their new gun. I have crossed the border many times, and could have been carrying an AR-15 and ammunition into Canada each time. It's not like they ever checked my bags.

Danforth shooter Faisal Hussain’ former teacher says there are ‘gaps’ in Ontario mental health system

Sajel Bellon, who led the program which aimed to train members of the community to get back into the workforce, said she had seen a positive transformation in Hussain from the start of the program to the end.
...
“No more hoodie, totally engaging with his peers in class, relating with the content we were delivering and by the end of the program, we were seeing a full transformation.”

Bellon said Hussain completed the course “ready and willing to go out there and get a job and move onto the next phase of his life.”
...
“It’s not just one layer of issue or dynamic that we need to be looking at. There’s cultural issues, theere’s financial issues, there are societal issues, there are understandings about mental health and understanding sometimes about reactionary issues,” she said. “It’s not as simple as everyone is trying to make it out to be.”

“I think there’s a lot of nuances and dynamics that play into this and I think we really need to look at it from a systemic level.”
...
“People are not hopeless, we can reach them we just need to have the right things in place and know how to make connection and I think if we can do that then we can prevent something like this [Danforth shooting] from happening in the future.”

This woman rushed to the aid of a Danforth shooting victim, and ended up in the line of fire | CBC News

“Danielle Kane has always been one to help.

So it's no surprise to anyone who knows her that — at a popular Italian restaurant on Sunday evening — when a frantic woman ran up, saying someone had been shot on Danforth Avenue, the 31-year-old nursing student and her boyfriend didn't think twice about running to help.

"That's who Dani is," her family said in a statement to CBC News.

"She always stands up for those who need help."

What the pair didn't know was, at that very moment, the shooter had made his way to the side door of the 7Numbers restaurant, gun in hand, and within seconds Kane's life would change forever....”

Another glaring red flag ignored...yet again. No one sane talks like this ever. Why are these comments brushed off?

Official warning: This evolved into a rant. X files not directed at you in any fashion! You have been officially warned. Scroll roll if needed!!

to be honest there is often a huge resistance to mental illness being a real thing.

there are no resources -- there is often a why did the family not do something

there is nothing they can do there are no resources

even the folks that have resources (Elliot's family) were unable to prevent

there imo is also this myth that mental illness is like diabetes take your meds and your it is fine

it is not like that at all. At all. Never has been nor will be.

Psyc meds are imo like tylenol for a headache. Which if fine if it is a stress headache! However the cause of the headache is a small brain tumor obviously we are in a different world

mental illness is like (figuratively) a small tumor. The meds don't address the small tumor -- just like tylenol tho they can help mitigate (rarely) the symptom - headache.

Our society here has really blurred mental illness. Big pharm and doctors have made it worse. If someones parent dies in a sudden car crash it is normative to have feelings of depression so the doc writes a anti dep RX. What a joke.

no one who has suffered a definable and understandable reason for depression needs a anti dep nor will benefit from one. but the society has absorbed that they help in this kind of scenario . The reality is IMO the passage of time not a pill did it.

so in societies mind they work.

They cure nothing.. They fix nothing . Possibly they mitigate some related problems .

but if we take our headache scenario and change it up a bit and tylenol makes the pt vomit fall over causes high blood pressure spikes etc etc in that instance the person might choose to endure the headache.

so the society erroneously believe that meds end mental illness and cure it. Which then results in society being angry with those who are mentally ill for not taking there meds. If they just would take there meds all will be well. Not how it works

but those that don't suffer with it turn that into he/she wont take their meds. The medication non compliance is imo two things : the side effect profile for each person or the illness itself.

someone with diabetes can remember to take their insulin

someone with mental health issues where a component of the illness itself is memory that is not not taking their meds

or if someone is hearing voices and the only way to help the voices go away is to take basically what are horse tranquilizers where there existence is to sit somewhere and drool well....

it gets worse. I dont think there is any chemotherapy that speeds up the growth of cancer cells. They may not work on the particular cancer but i dont think they speed things up.

That is not true with psyc meds - at all. Its is all neurotransmitters in the brain. But docs dont try to determine (controversial but there are neurotransmitters tests out there)
am getting long so gonna just do it this way!

So ........if your allergic to red and some meds make more red and some make less red but the doc does not know if you are allergic to red or blue and he she tosses you a med that makes more red you are getting worse not better the only way (basically symptom clusters are helpful but at the end of the day it is a guess) to find out is to toss it at the pt and see what happens.

But if you look at it from the pts worldview the last three meds that have been tossed at them make them feel worse one does get to a point where they are resistant to trying to the fourth and fitth mix

It is truly akin to learning not to touch a red hot stove, You just dont do it

with more acute illness (schizophrenia psychosis etc) it is even more complaicateds

For someone who is high functioning they can comprehend that it takes 4 5 weeks for levels to get correct to see if it might even help

for the acute folks who think they are on mars they cant even grasp the notion that you need to take it a while to get through the bad side effects phase .

Older folks remember these . What we need here in usa imo is a public education program about mental illness . but with the computer that is hard . I have dreamed where twitter and all of them make little public service things that they cant ignore! Like 7 seconds !

For the kids who are in school with shooters

random(but short!0 they have no attn span

Do you know a friend who seems sad - talk to them (cut!)

Is someone in school talking a lot about guns - tell someone (cut)

People who talk about killing themselves are serious cut)

Does a classmate of yours have marks - let someone know (cut)

etc etc

Us old folks remember these - and over time they did educate (in the old days television HAD to have a certain number of these - (public service announcements) on their airwaves!

We don’t quite know the actual context of “targeted”. He didn’t stand in or near any one place of business and spray bullets as has happened in other mass shootings. Instead it he walked down Danforth Ave and even crossed it a couple times, as if to suggest the shooting locations were deliberate and intentional.
How the Danforth shooting played out in Toronto

Yes, the area is known as Greektown to honour its establishment a 100 years ago. It appears to have evolved into a thriving, bustling commercial street with many restaurants, the sort of an evening place people like to go to, common to many large cities. (Ironically, during that early period it was the Greek immigrants who were subject to anger and resentment - google: 1918 Toronto Greek Riot).

The shooter is dead, reportedly by self-inflicted gunshots to his head after he was cornered by police. 29 years old, worked at a grocery store/drugstore likely minimum wage, still lived “at home”, 7th floor apartment in what appears to be a poverty stricken area, recently had hours cuts, reportedly helped support his family, a social outcast of sorts, a loner, no close friends, no known church or religious involvement, also several family challenges involving death of sister via traffic accident, gang member brother in coma due to OD, father with Parkinson-like illness, had a couple of prior mental health interventions, one when he was still in highschool, cut his face, at that time talked about shooting people and had obsession with guns.

Clearly a high risk profile regardless of ethic origin. Rather than seek intervention, we don’t know and may never know why he instead chose to inflict heartless tragedy onto others by intentionally injuring and murdering innocent strangers.

Thinking about venues the shooter shot at and wondered if all of them had glass windows in which he could see his reflection?
Also thinking about FA's " stance " as he shot and am reminded of the character played by Robert D. in the film Taxi Driver.
Did the shooter practice in front of a mirror at home?
speculation, imo.

Excellent thoughts @dotr. Because while he looked familiar and like he knew what he was doing (although I know we only have a few seconds to see) to me it looked like he was playing a role, like something he'd seen in a game but your Taxi Driver comparison makes perfect sense. (The mirror part, not that he watched the movie.)

This event is so devastating. What could have been done to prevent this man from doing this horrible deed? What 'encouraged' him to do it? Clearly he had mental health problems, but is social media and the media circus stimulating people with these problems to take actions like this??

His poor mother. She lost her daughter. Her one son is in a coma. Her husband is ill. And now her other son has committed an atrocity.

Of course, my mind most importantly goes to the victims and their loved ones. So sad.

Thinking of Dani today as just one example of a victim who has a long fight ahead of her.

And yet we keep seeing headlines like these in Ontario this week:

Tories blasted for $335M cut in planned spending on mental health
Health Minister Christine Elliott is under fire for cutting $335 million from planned mental health funding in Ontario this year.

With the defeat of the previous Liberal government on June 7, Premier Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservatives have cancelled former premier Kathleen Wynne’s promised $2.1 billion in additional mental health services over four years.

Ontario government to channel portion of mental health spending to police
The Ontario government says it will invest part of the $1.9 billion it has earmarked for mental health care into training police and first responders on how to manage interactions with people dealing with mental health issues and addictions.

The announcement comes in the wake of a shooting on Sunday night on Danforth Avenue that left two people dead and 13 others injured.

Anti-Islam protester thrown into fountain at Danforth shooting memorial in Toronto.

A crowd of angry Torontonians confronted a man who held up an anti-Islam sign at the site of the Danforth Avenue shooting, with one of them eventually throwing the man into a fountain.
...
The sign read “C.B.C. presents” on top, followed by two lines below, “Little Mosque on the praire [sic]” and below that, “Two dead girls in Greek Town.”

Northern Peninsula native caught in the middle of Toronto shooting | The Telegram
NP-A00-01082018-TorontoShooting-1_large.jpg

"TORONTO, ONT./STRAITSVIEW, N.L. – A man from Straitsview on the Northern Peninsula and his girlfriend were dining at a Toronto restaurant when their lives were changed forever.
A bullet shattered her T11 vertebra, piercing her stomach and diaphragm.

As of Friday, July 27, Kane was being treated at the intensive care unit at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto."
“I saw someone in the back of my eye, I walked a few steps and then I heard a click or a bang – I’m not sure what it was,” he recalled. “I looked back and I saw him and he just pulled his arms up in the air and I just heard gunfire. I ducked down by the patio and I heard six or eight shots. Then I heard Danielle scream, and someone say she got hurt."

“I jumped back up during the whole thing and I moved back to the patio and she was in the doorway of the exit. I just pushed her inside a little bit and closed the doors as quickly as I could to help protect her.”

"He remembered Kane saying she was in pain and couldn’t feel her legs.
Pinksen used his own experience as an emergency nurse to tend to her."

"Kane was taken to St. Michael’s Hospital, where she’s been in a coma ever since".

Danforth shooter went from work to killing rampage: Co-worker
"A former colleague who worked with Fasial Hussain at the Leaside Loblaws on Redway Rd., near Millwood Rd., said the organic groceries clerk was on shift until 3 p.m., swiped out and then sat at the picnic bench outside the store until 9 p.m."

“He sat alone most of the time (during those six hours),” she said".

"Eerily enough, she said the bag he used during his rampage was sitting on the picnic table and he had on the same outfit at work that was seen in the video footage of the shooting.

“Everyone’s natural reaction was ‘What was he thinking at the time? … What if he’d targeted the store?’”

She said although she saw him socially, he was never with her friends whenever they went to Caffe Demetres, a cafe on the Danforth.

"Earlier this week, the co-worker told the Toronto Sun that Hussain was “happy, bubbly” and “always willing to help” the store’s front-end staff, the majority of which were women or girls.

She said she never saw any sign of mental illness or depression".

I was reading the Toronto Sun, MALCOLM: Still so much we don’t know in Danforth shooting
and they are talking about how secretive the police and gov't are about the shooting. That reminds me of Las Vegas, where the FBI won't tell us anything until "maybe" October. Las Vegas shooting: FBI official says info on motive may take until next October to release
I think when the gov't suppresses the information it just makes things worse. Sooner or later it will come out, and to be honest, it won't be anything worth hiding from the public.

Public visitation today for young woman killed in Danforth shooting

Reese Fallon, 18, appears in this undated Facebook photo.
Sunday, July 29, 2018
"TORONTO - A public visitation will be held today for the 18-year-old woman who was one of two people killed in Toronto's Greektown shooting a week ago".

"In an obituary posted online, Fallon's family says the aspiring nurse will be "deeply missed but not forgotten by all of her close honorary family members, cousins, extended family and of course all of her close and beautiful friends."

A public funeral will be held Monday morning".

Funerals held today for two people killed in Toronto's Danforth shooting
"TORONTO -- Mourners converged on two private funeral services on Monday to bid goodbye to the two young victims slain in the mass shooting in Toronto's Greektown neighbourhood.

Reese Fallon, 18, and 10-year-old Julianna Kozis were laid to rest in separate funeral services that took place away from the public eye.

Dignitaries including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario deputy premier Christine Elliott were on hand at the Toronto funeral home where mourners came to pay their respects to Fallon, a recent high school graduate who was due to start studying nursing at Hamilton's McMaster University in the fall.

With police maintaining a heavy presence around the building, groups of teens holding hands and exchanging hugs quietly entered to say their goodbyes.

Further north in Markham, Ont., mourners arrived at a Greek Orthodox church where a service was taking place to honour Kozis.

A small group of funeral attendees watched as pallbearers lifted a white casket out of a hearse and into the ornate building. Some leaned on each other for support while others stood with their hands clasped in front of them."

One reason LE generally does not release a whole lot of information at the very onset is out of courtesy and respect for the grieving families and friends of the victims. Otherwise, public focus on the perp has a tendency to completely overshadow those who were directly impacted by the tragic consequences.

At first I was thinking the lack of any basic info was more about generally speaking Canada being much less aggressive than America. They tend to have manners.
!

But it has been a long time and it feels like they have no intention to release more. He dead so they cant use the being careful for prosecution line. moo

IMo it is repulsive when someone has a Muslim last name and in 2.5 seconds terror is always in the mix.

No evidence has been found so far to support the Isis's claim of responsibility for the mass shooting in Toronto which killed two people and wounded 13 others, police in the Canadian city said.

When you look at the whole LV mess IMO that was a huge terrorist attack (in the Paris mode) and because we got an old white dude it all goes away.

This problem becomes even more confusing in that simple statistics clearly indicate that white american males with guns kill far far far more people in this country than others. It is simple math
What is even stranger to me, is that when a shooter reports that he did it in the name off whatever most believe him instantly.

My question is the dude in question just murdered a bunch of people and we are responding like this is an honest outstanding truthful individual? They just killed a bunch of people ??

Omar/Pulse IMO could not have been living a more western life than any of us!!

Similar dynamics come into play when mental illness enters the background. Why that does not make a heap of sense (in the context of it is atypical to have desires or act out on using machine guns on fellow humans in and of itself ) has always struck me as peculiar at best mo

Actually I am talking about the FBI tendency to many months, like the LV shooting. Where they put out "teasers" like the last one, we'll tell you in 11 months. No, I totally understand what regular law enforcement is doing.
