If an accused felt he had information that perhaps LE was not following up on, wouldn't his lawyer be able to follow up on it through a PI, as part of the accused's defence and include it in his legal bill? I'm not sure how the legal aid bill is presented, how specifically it might be itemized for how the amount accrued to whatever the total ends up being? Why would legal aid provide money for a serial murderer to have a defence team of 7 lawyers, paid for with the public purse?

Why would legal aid provide money for a private investigator? That's not part of a normal defence.

Depends on the practice! I do know that divorce lawyers and custody evaluators will pick up garbage...
If the end game is to evoke doubt into the minds of jurors. The work of an investigator may be a wise business expenditure!

While he may be paid from the public coffer , the reputation earned by representing a client and providing an expert defense is ... Priceless.

Expert testimony is one thing, "evidence" presented by a private investigator is useless.

Indeed. I am so anxious to find out. I was thinking that maybe the media was busy preparing for a big news story to come out tomorrow in court. Is it possible they (reporters) could have been asked to address this a certain way and maybe given a hint about tomorrow?

It doesn't seem that unusual to me. What's the point in reporting that tomorrow there might be something to report? The media reports the news ... after it happens. Furthermore, it's not like it's something that should be advertised ... it's a trial proceeding for murder, not entertainment.

It's more likely that reporters are following current stories, like the woman that was a victim of domestic dispute, and the fact that police are waist deep in the Elbow River searching for a murder weapon.

If the burden of proof is on the prosecution, and producing doubt is the defences job. I would think that anything/ anyone being able to build "doubt" would be useful to the case from the defenses perspective.

I feel it is odd because this is a case which garnered national attention, there has been little information released, everyone is curious about the accused, the accused will be at a court date tomorrow, and if nothing else, you would think they would remind so that people would buy the newspaper tomorrow after they report on it.. that is their goal, right? Why wouldn't they be playing it up for all it's worth in order to sell more papers.

I don't think that a trial is a free for all where the defence can waste everyone's time by presenting all sorts of crazy theories. The defence can interpret the evidence differently than the prosecution, but it's not an option to ignore the evidence and create a brand new set of facts. Furthermore, evidence has to follow a chain of custody, so anything a private investigator produces is put in question.

Taxpayers are paying for Mr. Pickton's defence team, a core group of eight lawyers, which at times has numbered 18, plus salaries for the seven Crown lawyers. Even the judge has a lawyer.

The mass murder in April got national attention too. All the information for that mass murder, and this triple murder, will be released during trial ... as it always is.

The media has to abide by rules that govern what they can report after there has been an arrest, and prior to trial.
Does anyone actually want to see this case sensationalized?

There is so much going on in the world that I think people, generally speaking, have little interest in hearing about tomorrow's court schedule. If something news worthy happens tomorrow, it will be in the news tomorrow.
