in the academic world, it appears to be black an white... the real world has shades of grey
I think comes down to either having, or not having, the credentials to back up the claim ... nothing to do with academics. I was posting on another thread and a new poster claimed to be a forensic chemist that specialized in DNA analysis. If true, this person had the ability to add huge value to the discussion. A couple of weeks later, sure enough, he was verified ... the real deal. Lawyers and medical professionals that have been verified also add huge value in terms to offering actual insight into all sorts of related questions. Journalists have so much to offer as well, but only when they are the real deal. It means that claims made by those professionals do not have to be backed up with a link ... win-win.
