Here is a current breaking story in Calgary. So many questions about the children and their welfare thru this whole mess.

I am not familiar with this case but I do not think the victim's body was recovered. However details released state that remains were recently found in the home where the accused and the two children were residing. How awful. The children are in my thoughts and I hope they are in the proper care and have full access to the resources and support they will need to live and adapt to a healthy life. Absolutely heart breaking.

Notice the perp walk and released details from LE.

Always the husband... LOL. This is where I got the 'Ogden' reference. It is sadly becoming difficult to seperate the many suspicious deaths that Calgary has had this year.

How absolutely horrible for the two children! Living in the same home with their mother's remains... Hopefully, they were shielded from the events and outcome. SMH.

And here we go with more "Mr. Big" debate...

http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/n...over+court+decision+email/10444335/story.html

“The RCMP takes the decision by the Supreme Court very seriously and will continue to ensure that whenever the Major Crime Technique is deployed in serious criminal investigations, that it meets the criteria laid out by the court,” Falls said.

He added that Canadian law enforcement officials met last month as part of a national working group to develop a “consistent approach” for the use of the technique.

OT, but I had always had in my head that it was *worse* to be found NCR, as opposed to ''guilty'.. I thought that instead of a convict spending a determined amount of time in a prison, the NCR would be at the mercy of his institution and therefore *never* see the light of day, well at least the light of day anywhere other than at whichever institution one resided in. What kind of institution would ever let someone out who had been deemed to be so mentally ill that they either couldn't stand trial or couldn't be found responsible?

But I guess I thought wrong! I am shocked to read this story about a man who was let out on a MONDAY and failed to return 2 days later, on the WEDNESDAY! So I guess it's okay for these NCR's to get day passes, or two-day passes, to just roam amongst us and everything is fine unless they fail to return? And then suddenly if they don't return, they figure out, hey, this guy 'may present a serious safety risk'?

It seems the police and media are not stating what this man did to get himself locked up, so I suppose with NCR, there are privacy rights involved, as opposed to being found 'guilty', where the world gets to know. Please note this is in Toronto and not in Calgary, but one might take a leap to suggest that our provincial review boards within Canada may act similarly. I also suppose that I shouldn't jump to conclusions in thinking perhaps he committed some heinous crime, perhaps he only stole a chocolate bar or something.

In any case, maybe not such a bad idea afterall to claim NCR!
One of the most prevalent cases for me, was that of Vincent Li in Winnipeg. I covered the story of the Greyhound beheading and it is one of the NCR cases that will forever stick with me. He was granted unescorted day passes, only six years later.

While I have great empathy for people suffering from mental illness and believe that they should be treated with compassion, I have a hard time accepting these types of decisions. It is certainly a debate that has many componants, and will likely remain polarized.

Can't remember which WS'er sneered at the idea that perhaps this technique may currently be in use in this case when it was thrown out on the table many threads back. If I remember correctly, there were some comments about LE not being willing to jeapordize an investigation and subject themselves to a major lawsuit, etc., etc. (don't quote me please, but that was the jist of it).

Apparently, not only is it used...it's used quite frequently....

Developed by the RCMP in the 1990s, the Mr. Big technique has been used at least 350 times. Officials have previously said that the technique has been used successfully to solve homicides, sexual assaults, armed robberies, arsons, kidnappings, corruption and national security investigations.

The above excerpt is from the article indicated by LL in above post.

I say more power to them, if this technique works to get to the root of any crime, then they have my vote! Having said that, we can't discount that this may be a potential investigative technique used in this case either.

Yes, thanks LL for informing me/us about Shannon's thread!

I've held off reading/sleuthing about little William Tyrell in Australia to focus on Shannon's thread instead.

Others please join/contribute to Shannon's thread also as this woman needs to be found, time is of the essence! The more heads/ideas, the better.

And thanks again LL for drawing attention to Shannon's thread.

ok, I don't remember reading this because I don't read the Calgary sun,,, but this confuses me,, read it and then explain to me the part where it says "Jeff's brother Josh..."

http://www.calgarysun.com/2014/07/10/vigil-to-be-held-for-missing-calgary-boy-and-his-grandparents

who is this JL they are referring to?

Uhhhhhh, yeah, who the heck is Josh is right? Good catch Stan! Would be an error from the publication? Can't find a Josh L on FB, but in Jeff's friends there's two Josh's with different last names that aren't Liknes…a stepbrother?

I have often wondered if he returned to his wife and family? Does anyone know?

Now that Li has stabilized, I believe a retrial ''should'' be reordered/and/or at least some sentencing for him JMHO.
IF he is well enough to roam amongst the general population, then he is well enough to accept the consequences of his actions when he wasn't well (MOO).

Hopefully that would incentivize his desire to stay on meds and behave.

the missing sixth

This has always confused me as not all kids were at the presser if they do have 6 kids total between KL and AL.

AL, NL, EL, JL, JO. I have wondered about CL (rhymes with flint) and LL (rhymes with Dana).

This woman went missing in October 2012, and then reported missing by her family (not by her husband) some 3 weeks later, in November 2012. Then in January 2013 the case was turned over to 'CPS' (I believe the reporter must have meant turned over to the homicide unit as opposed to the missing persons unit?? In any case.. then it says, 'which led investigators to execute a search warrant on Friday' (it is now December 5, 2014, so the case is transferred to homicide in January 2013, which led officers to search the home on December 5, 2015?) Wow, seems like really terrible reporting! The husband has been charged with both murder and indignity to a body, and the body could have been deceased for over 2 years now. It says what is believed to be human remains were discovered, but doesn't state 'partial human remains' or.. the whole thing.. I wonder if, this is gross but.. he cut her up and put her in the freezer? Would that stave off the odor of decomp if frozen? Also, husband wasn't arrested at the home.. but says someone else was at the home, and also arrested there on other charges. Another bizarre case!

The investigation was turned over to the Calgary Police Service on Jan. 9, 2013, which led officers to execute a search warrant Friday at the Ogden home.

"Hebert said investigators discovered what’s believed to be human remains within the house. Members with the forensic crime scene unit continued to search the home Saturday."

"When asked how it was possible for three people to live in a home containing what’s believed to be human remains, Hebert said: “There are some circumstances within the house that it will be revealed during the court process that will answer that question.”"

That's so disturbing, it's hard to believe people do this stuff. What a nightmare for the family.

I was thinking freezer as well. I suspect the house was filthy and contaminated, I can just imagine the living conditions could be that of a condemned home and if so the remains could have been scattered and rotted throughout the home.

If the children still lived in the home I can not understand how they slipped thru the cracks of child welfare.

This story in relation to this thread... Why did LE reveal these disturbing facts? If LE has forensic confirmation regarding the L's and NO but will not say where or how they have confirmed they were murdered or if there was blood/DNA belonging to the victims while reasoning that they can't reveal certain details of evidence because it is before the courts.... but in this case (Lisa Mitchell), damning evidence has been publicized within hours of an arrest. I just do not understand the logic.
