“They’re not known to police. They were an elderly couple in that area — and it’s a quiet area,” said Sgt. David Lee with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

He notes investigators are still gathering evidence and speaking to witnesses in the hopes of putting together a timeline of events.

“At this stage, it is uncertain if this was a random or targeted incident.”

Investigators say they released the victims’ identities in the hopes more witnesses or associates will come forward.

“It’s definitely unusual,” Lee said. “We’re alive to the concerns of the community. It’s a very complex scene and we’re piecing together the leads right now. Hopefully, we’ll have some more answers into what is the motive and which suspects we’re looking for.”

''ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - Police have identified a husband and wife, both in their 70s, as homicide victims in Abbotsford, B.C.

Investigators say 77-year-old Arnold De Jong and 76-year-old Joanne De Jong were found dead in a home on Monday.''

''Sgt. David Lee of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says they are releasing the names and a photo of the victims to further the investigation and identify other possible witnesses.
The statement says homicide investigators are still collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses and trying to build a timeline in the hours before and after the deaths.''

Dear @realanastasia ,

Thank you for linking the news article. I am hoping so much that video surveillance around the area will lead
to the perpetrator of this horrid crime.

This is so dreadful to learn about.

My heart goes out to their loved ones who are suffering a tremendous loss of this couple from their lives.
May their family be surrounded by love and support at this unfathomable time.

''Neighbours were tight-lipped on Wednesday, not commenting beyond saying they were a lovely couple that had lived in the home for many years.''

Lee said police do not think the case was a murder-suicide and that they are searching for a suspect, though they do not know the identity of a suspect.

He said a family member, who does not live at the house, called police. The deceased were in different parts of the residence.

Police did not provide information on the cause of the death.

Arnold De Jong was a long-distance trucker whose collector truck — a Vancouver-built 1965 Hayes Clipper 100 — was featured in a Postmedia story in 2019. ''

''Police are in the process of collecting evidence and constructing a timeline. They hope to identify people who knew the couple or obtain dashcam footage of drivers who were on the quiet rural road on May 8 and 9.''

“We are asking anyone with information about Arnold and Joanne to call IHIT,” said Lee. “Their information may be key.”
Anyone with information can call IHIT’s tip line at 1-877-551-4448 (IHIT) or by email at [email protected].''

''Abbotsford long-distance trucker Arnie De Jong has been driving his 1965 Hayes Clipper 100 for well over 50 years. It gets a lot of attention on the highway and at truck shows. The first time Arnie climbed in this Hayes highway truck was in February 1966. Del Barton had bought the truck new, and Arnie became his driver – hauling shakes to California and fresh produce on the return trip to Vancouver.

“Back in the day, Hayes trucks were a little more expensive,” Arnie says. “My truck was a custom. They had never built a truck like this before. It was so fancy that it even had chrome frames around the windows, a chrome steering column and two air ride seats.

“The Americans ogled the truck because they didn’t have anything that looked like the Hayes.“

Dear @dotr,

Thank you for posting this information.

Reading the following excerpted sentence from the news article you've shared, it seems that the L.E. are looking at dates beginning May 8th:

''Police are in the process of collecting evidence and constructing a timeline. They hope to identify people who knew the couple or obtain dashcam footage of drivers who were on the quiet rural road on May 8 and 9.''

I suppose, the area being so rural, that "dashcam footage" could be the most viable way to identify vehicles
around there on those 2 days.

Perhaps even the data that the L.E. obtain from their phone(s)/landline will help - if even just to tighten up the timeline.

Excerpt:

Abbotsford police have stepped up patrols as they work to reassure residents rattled by the killing of a married couple in their 70s.

“I know the public probably has a lot of questions, there’s a lot of unanswered questions to that effect. Right now the investigative team, IHIT, cannot make a conclusive determination if it’s targeted or random,” Abbotsford police Const. Paul Walker told Global News Thursday.

Excerpt:

“How now do we live?” the couple’s eldest daughter, Sandra, asked through tears during an interview Thursday morning.

The family celebrated Mother’s Day the day before the couple’s bodies were found in their home in the 33600-block Arcadian Way, a semi-rural part of Abbotsford dotted with woods and small acreages. Joanne played hide-and-seek with her three grandkids, while Arnold, dressed as he always did in Wranglers and a blue shirt, visited with his daughters and their husbands.

I wonder about their children, and a possible life insurance angle. The article above mentions two daughters; does anyone know if there are any more children in the mix?

“I knew Arnie and Joanne De Jong for over 40 years and their loss is felt by many in our community.”
''Braun added that while incidents like this are rare in Abbotsford, that fact “makes it all the more shocking and unsettling for the community.”

“As a community, we are concerned with the uncertainty that follows an investigation like this,” said Braun.
“They’re not known to police. They were an elderly couple in that area — and it’s a quiet area,” said Sgt. David Lee with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

The cause of death has not been shared by police.

We’re fairly certain right now that is not related to any ongoing gang activity, not connected to anything else we’ve seen so far in the Lower Mainland,” Lee added.

The mayor and police both ask that anyone with information call IHIT on the Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at [email protected].''

''ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - RCMP say three men have been arrested and charged with two counts each of first-degree murder in the killings of an Abbotsford, B.C., couple last spring.

The Mounties say Arnold De Jong, a 77-year-old business owner, and his 76-year-old wife, Joanne De Jong, were found dead in their home on May 9.

TheIntegrated Homicide Investigation Team says 20-year-old Gurkaran Singh as well as Abhijeet Singh and Khushveer Toor, both 22, were arrested Friday in Surrey.

Sgt. Timothy Pierotti says the attack was not random, as one of the suspects was known to the family, but he told a news conference he could not provide details.''

There is a Canadian LinkedIn profile for someone named AS who lists his profession as a warehouse manager at Canadian Dry Storage, which sounds like the kind of business that might have worked with Mr. DeJong’s transportation company. Wonder if that is how the murderers knew this couple.
