IMO the big problem was the inflammatory headline the Toronto Sun chose to use for Warmington's column: "
Murder-suicide suspected in deaths of Toronto billionaire and wife"
Other statements were also in the column, like: "Bott said homicide detectives will conduct a full investigation and all avenues will be explored."
The Daily Mail took it even further, publishing the murder-suicide scenario in a headline as though it was completely factual. They never published the source of the quote in the headline, the only source they cite in the article is the Toronto Sun.
Billionaire pharmaceutical magnate 'killed his wife, hung her body from railings next to their indoor pool then committed suicide in the basement of their $5.4million home before a realtor found their remains'.
When the family hit back with strong objections, Warmington and the Sun refused to admit responsibility for distorting police statements, and ever since have blamed an alleged police source, who apparently insisted Warmington publish this theory.
Essentially Warmington/the Sun has been saying, "I couldn't help myself, this important but forever anonymous person,
made me do it. "
The one thing Warmington/the Sun will never do is admit he made an error in judgement, and it had massive negative consequences to the family. Because they know all the ins and outs of defamation lawsuits.
