JMO Nothing is cheap in Canada. Building materials ,builders, basically everything is highly taxed.
50 thousand would be one year of property tax for the Shermans if the house was actually valued @ 6.9

In Canada you pay enough money for off-brand pharmaceuticals to make people billionaires many times over

Yep, Canadians pay 20% more for these less potent drugs than the rest of the developed world. Disgraceful!!

Mature trees and green spaces like ravines increase the value of homes in TO.
Would the house on Old Colony Road be sold as a tear down? I mean before the deaths.

Edited to add. The house was old and dated, so probably would be a teardown?

Anyone trying to kill them down there would have been trapped if someone else happened along.

eta: someone must have made a search of the entire house in order to find the Shermans.
And anyone could have hidden down there for quite a while, bathroom, kitchen...large area apart from the house. Perhaps, Honey came home first and was killed. Then, Barry came home later to a murderer(s) staged scene and knew that he would likely be killed. Maybe revenge? Someone knew the home. Laid in wait perhaps. Could he/she/they have gotten in with a garage door opener? My one mechanic said that he could literally drive down any road and hit any garage door opener in a car and different garages open up. He said that many people use the same codes, such as 1234. He also said it is also easy to swipe someone's code. Scary thought. Easy access. The litigations and the money makes motive for murder plausible.

I got lost. Now my legs hurt and I am out of breath.

On a side note. This is an upper scale neighborhood? Looks like a middle class neighborhood to me. In fact some of the houses and yards look like lower class neighborhood.

We have many middle class neighborhoods just like this in the nearest city from me. Usually the people who live in them earn around a 100 to 200 thousand a year, not much for this day and time really. But definitely neighborhood committees would be all over some of those residents in that additions for those cluttered yards.

Wow! Really?
I did a quick “stroll” & it clearly looked like an upscale neighborhood to me.

Astounds me that at their ages they would be wanting to build another 20000 sq foot house, even more so after what happened last time they built.
If one partner was opposed to the idea, that could cause ructions.

Perhaps Barry thought 10000 sq feet would be big enough, especially if he didn’t enjoy hosting 80 people for dinner regularly.
If it is murder/ suicide I think it was unplanned. Some straw broke the camels back.

From the plans its a retirement home for them. Elevator to all three levels or was it two? Beautiful gardens with sliding doors and lots of bright sunlight coming in. I guess with their income, heating/cooling isn't a problem but I noticed that both homes have a lot of glass walls and skylights. Some in the new home were to be very large and I wouldn't think it would be easy to keep the place warm.

Guess they were off to Florida for the winters, or that was the plan. You know, when a spouse (Honey) has had 30 yrs to do her own thing, then Barry takes a 'retirement of sorts' often the one at home gets frustrated with the newly retired. They are under foot, interfere with your normal day to day stuff. That can build up some friction, as they often say 'what are WE doing now?'

Doubtful. Concrete and steel would be very costly to knock down. Im sure all of the 'faults' have been fixed, they stayed for 30 odd years.

Not only that but this guy was a BILLIONAIRE. One of the truly elite of the entire planet.

This was not John and Patsy Ramsey. This guy is like Scrooge McDuck rich!

If he purposefully or accidentally killed his wife he would have access to professional "fixers" to make a problem like that go away.
Sorry, but no. The Sherman's were billionaires, yes. In no way does that mean they would have connections to criminal activity, or professional fixers. Do you actually think BS, or anyone, has Ray Donovan on speed dial, just because they have money? C'mon now. I don't believe he would even have the slightest idea where to find someone like that.

I don't think so. In Canada, the law is the law, regardless of wealth. He would have been arrested, charged, and his lawyers would have had to argue "heat of passion". That's typically a 10 year sentence. At best, he could be deemed mentally incapable at the moment of committing murder, and that would have earned him a few years in a psychiatric institution. Either way, his reputation would have been completely destroyed. Today, his family is doing everything they can to preserve his reputation as a philanthropist rather than a murderer, including hiring a team of lawyers, a retired detective and whoever else they need to keep the husband's reputation as clean as possible.
I really think it's more than preserving his reputation and legacy. I think they desperately want to know what so horrifically and tragically happened to their deeply loved parents. Why not be as thorough as possible?

I completely and totally disagree. That kind of wealth AND power AND connections can get you absolutely anything you want. Including "fixing" a murder scene.
Well in THIS scenario, I don't think that narrative fits. BS is dead. If he hired someone to "fix" anything, he'd be alive right now and HS would be a missing persons case.

You would think houses would be cheap to build in Canada with all those trees. Maybe materials other than lumber are higher?

The houses I saw in that walk would sell for anywhere from 50 thousand upwards to 250 thousand here in my state.

LOL ! That area of Toronto is where the richest of the rich live. Also Toronto real estate prices are hugely inflated. Veritable shacks sell for a million.

Its a step down from where the richest of the rich live. Forest Hill, Bridle Path area, Rosedale are where the richest of the rich live.

Not to say its not a lovely area thought. Convenient to the highway.....if you travel a lot.

Yes. Many people get caught out with their home insurance when they have insured for the value of the house and not for the demolition and removing the damaged home.

It just not registering for me. If this was really the case, why now, at this point? Wouldn't the argument have ensued when the property was bought? When the construction plans were drawn up? When the house was demolished? Etc?

I just can't reconcile that BS decided, over square footage or custom finishings, that he was going to kill HS. I think if this was a murder-suicide, (which I remain undecided on) it would be over something much more sinister that we are no where close to being privy of.

I see he's still getting the Order of Canada. A friend or family member will be invited to pick it up at a future time.
IMO, thats not right. They are not given out posthumously, someone linked that upthread in thread 2.

I wonder if because he was nominated while still alive that it's not considered posthumous?

IDK.

The Order of Canada cannot be awarded to someone after their death, but Sherman was nominated more than six months ago. The Order of Canada advisory council, which decides who gets the award, granted it to him at their November meeting. Payette signed the appointment prior to his death.
A Rideau Hall spokeswoman says a family member can stand in for Sherman at the investiture ceremony, likely some time in 2018.

Anyone know how long it would take to build the new home in Forest hill? I am guessing at least a year. Had they even broken ground? We are in a deep freeze in Toronto with extremely cold weather. I am also guessing this would delay construction in the winter months.

I dont understand with all their wealth why they would have listed the Colony Rd home so early in the process.

Maybe they thought it would take a long time to sell, but it only needs that one buyer. I thiInk it is an ugly house, but others may love it. It would not be what I would buy if I had 6.9 million.

One interesting comment under that article about Teva.

Typical Sun article.
Seems to be more about Fantino than the Shermans.

Wouldn't trust Fantino's take on the investigation at all.
The guy spent 10 years as a mall cop before he was finally able to make it on the Police Force.
Making it to Chief just means he was a good member of the Old Boys BS Club.
