They say its better to come forward then to get caught, when it comes to the charges, getting laid, and chance of parole down the line... either way will serve time, so up to the them, how they would like their prison term to be.. IMO if ok to have one.

Unless there are witnesses or a video, the whole truth is only ever known by the perp and the victim. If the RCMP had all the evidence in place at this time and knew exactly what occurred, we would see charges being laid.

So I agree with you, meanwhile they are giving the perp a window of opportunity to come forward. Regardless of what happened, the court system always looks favourably upon someone who offers a voluntary confession and guilty plea.

The comments about the spade bit is based on simple observation and they are very easy to identify.

Someone posted a comment about photos showing Ben changed bridles but it's a long process to train a horse in the Vaquero style (which includes the spade bit) and starts with a bosal, the four reins that was in the photo someone posted (Ben even commented on that photo that 'she' was coming along quite nicely with 4 reins', which is another step toward the spade bit.

The RCMP have classified the disappearance as “suspicious” but have not made a formal announcement of a homicide investigation. So I suppose if we take the word “targeted” literally, the question could be asked - targeted for what? Assault, robbery, death....?

Much like when Ben first went missing and it appeared there was a good chance he’d be found, it’s difficult to predict what comes next. But when LE suddenly take a missing persons case with no foul play suspected all the way up to a possible targeted crime with criminal involvement (aka premeditated murder) often the truth is somewhere in the middle. JMO

I think it's very unusual for police to officially declare a homicide without any remains. Normally a coroner examines the body and declares the cause of death as murder, first.

I also believe police don't make statements or even use certain words, unless they have strong evidence to back them up. For example, in the case of Thelma Krull, police stated (after 1 year), that they believed she "may have been abducted or suffered a medical event at the site where her glasses were found. "

So it occurs to me, possibly LE have found evidence of criminality, associated closely with Ben, and that's why they used that particular, very unusual word. Normally, they would just say his disappearance appeared suspicious.

Dean was working on a ranch, Ben worked on ranch and Luke was pictured with a horse.. Is it all a coincidence? I think maybe a ranch job in this area might be hard to fill, lol.

As we have seen in the past, In Canada DONT need remains to be Charged with murder. Look at the case of Missing 5 year old Nathan Obrien and his grandparents.
Not one body found but still Douglas Garland got life. Just takes that piece of evidence.!

It's a good question about the apparent coincidence of Kim Robinson finding the horse. However, on reflection, I think it's probable he was called in to track and capture the horse after it had been sighted the day or night before.

The early media reports hint at this: "Loggers in the area found the lone horse and informed local ranchers, who retrieved the horse and identified its owner — a 32-year-old man from the area who worked at a local ranch."

Robinson would be the guy to call in this town of 7,000, given his fame and enjoyment of tracking, and he set off to start it super early in the morning, probably in his truck. The horse might have been hanging around the logging road because that's where he'd been unloaded.

IMO these kinds of circumstances are never straightforward, but the media prefer to simplify the story and not get 'bogged down' in explaining all the details. Often causes head scratches for us detail-oriented folks.

You’re exactly right. I can bring the post over. Actually, I hope the OP has time to post more. His posts were very informative! I always like to hear from a working cowboy, not just a rancher, rather a cowboy that’s lived the life. Any of us can farm/ranch. But to ride the trail, live the life, is truly different.

He seemed to enjoy taking pics....
Another reason I believe he would have his phone on him, especially with his family so far away. I’m guessing he liked to send pics to them

Someone with similar background would know instantly what the two rein system is, what a bosal & mecate is and a spade bit is. I have looked at several pictures of Gunny tacked up and I'm sure the other member who's imparted knowledge could aslo offer a solid observation of which photo shows Gunny's introduction to the spade bit as well.

Spade bits are ornate and unique and very hard to miss, if you know what they are but it would be a lot like asking a diamond expert to explain cut and cut and clarity in a few short sentences. It takes decades to be considered a horseman and to be considered competent or capable in Vaquero style training takes decades more. Their belief is few become masters and many remain students for a lifetime.

There has bee much discussion about the broken rein with the belief that where the rein broke has some signficance and I don't feel it is. Ben used split reins and I suspect that the rein simply broke when the horse stepped on it. It's just as likely the break resulted from weak spot or join in the leather or it may simply be a matter of the popper

Most braiders cut their own leather to braid rather than buying it in strands and even those skilled in cutting still make have to add to achieve the proper length and the tanning process leaves thin spots in leather. The finished product will work fine under day to day use but may break under certain circumstances.

Perhaps he was on a date or had a meeting of some sort. That's the most common reason for turning off a phone or leaving it behind.

If, like me, you've only come to know this gentle cowboy after his death, then promise yourself not to go there.

Unless you want your tender heart and tough guts to be ripped from your body and handed back to you on a platter...then don't go there...

The weather in the Merritt area is warmer and mostly sunny lately. Many folks will be out and about in the whole area after the long winter. I think there are many mountain bike trails on the mountain where Gunny was found. If Ben is anywhere in the Merritt area, hopefully he will be located with all the increased activity.

Only one very small niggling thought I sometimes get...a fatal accident hasn’t been entirely ruled out although the probability has become far less likely now.

But I can’t help but think about some similarities in reverse to Ben’s mysterious disappearance and another 37 year old cowboy from Alberta missing last fall from a ranch near Billings, Montana.

After an entire month of searching and finding no leads at all, sadly his body was recovered from a small but deep creek near where he went missing even though the creek had already been searched once or more times. Family members travelled to Billings several times to aid in the search and plead for information. It was believed his death was caused accidentally.

But no riderless horse was involved....which continues to puzzle me. Why would a perp transport Ben’s horse that considerable distance, knowing it was sure to be identified and then give rise to truck/trailer questions? Why not just let the horse go closer to the ranch? I don’t know the answer but hopefully LE has something. But I admit sometimes I still wonder if somebody dropped Ben and his horse off somewhere and is now too afraid to say and others are covering up.

Cameron Collin's is a horrible story I had not heard of before today. Absolutely shocking how he was left drunk by himself in the darkness, and then his disappearance not reported until after the wedding. How does that happen?

I can't make sense of Gunny being found, wandering alone with a broken rein, far from the ranch either. None of what we know about Ben's disappearance makes any sense to me, because it is the opposite of what we are told he always did. It's like aliens took him or he was put into witness protection. How do people just seemingly disappear off the face of the earth and even all the searching by locals, who know every tree, can't find them?
