In fairness, he has spoken about building it for several years now, using family funds that were earmarked for charitable giving. Now he is using his own money I guess. I’m not sure what makes the timing funny now, the case hasn’t changed much in several years, at least as far as we know.
“Now he is using his own money, I guess.”

Is he?

Although I have read the word “solo” used to describe the charitable gift, no article that I have read has specifically stated that the money is coming from JS and not from the family charitable foundation. Some might say they are the same thing, but I disagree. It’s easy to give away somebody else’s money, especially when it’s already designated for charity and it benefits you to do so.

Since JS has for several years sought money “already earmarked for charitable giving” from the family’s charitable foundation (a time during which he certainly could have used his own money to fund such a project), I suspect that this gift is not as charitable as JS (and perhaps the media) would have us believe.

His sister Alexandra had previously denied him the money from the family’s charitable foundation. Did she finally acquiesce? If so, I wonder why?

Call me a cynic, but from all those (petulant?) e-mails JS sent BS about how he still was not getting enough of BS’s millions, I would be surprised to learn that this “gift” actually came from JS’s own pot. And I tend to agree with RHR that JS has always wanted his own personal hockey rink toy.

Even if from the charitable foundation, I don’t think BS would have approved this use of funds - but JS doesn’t have to worry about that (or sending boundary-crossing e-mails) anymore. There’s a new Sheriff in town.

More power to JS if this is a legitimate gift from his own (albeit inherited) pot and has no strings attached, but it’s been a long time since I’ve been willing to say: “in fairness” when it comes to JS, or to give him any “benefit of doubt”.

All just my opinion

Maybe not, I’m not sure. But I don’t understand why some posters seem to be upset or concerned that JS is donating some of his money to build a Community arena.
I'm not upset that he's spending his own money but I find it odd that he's naming it for his parents when they've never shown interest in hockey, and he's hugely into hockey. He even took a sly shot at his dad for never coming to his hockey games in his eulogy.

There is alot of animosity on this board for someone who is only known to most folks here by the content of a few email exchanges, and veiled inferences made by KD. Everyone is entitled to their viewpoint of course. MOO

He is honouring the memory of his parents. How can anyone reasonably find fault with that? .

BS and HS supported all kinds of causes and the UJA Sherman campus has significant onsite fitness facilities. This is one more example of members of the Sherman family continuing their community support. Good on him.

It’s difficult to find anything substantial that JS has given to charity.
The Fred and Jon Sherman family foundation does little.
He added twenty five million of his own money to the family’s ten million existing for the reward.
Fifty two million for a hockey arena.
Now what means more ? Hmmmmm.

From what I understand it is from his own inheritance, ( B and H ‘s hard earned money), the sisters are not on board at all.
I think it’s called a Distraction Donation.

Always the potential throughout this tragic and strange tale for a plot twist at the end..
Meanwhile, a saying (and my dear dad) comes to mind regarding the skating rink, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth".
(Unless you are in Troy, imo)

The potential restriction on operating hours is certainly not the decision of JS.

Probably not, but I think JS is a secular Jew like his dad, and wouldn't care if he played on Fridays and Saturdays, yet he's building a rink right smack dab in the middle of an area where a lot of devout Jews live, entwining the recreation centre into activities where many will not attend during restrictions on the Sabbath.

you might try reasonable explanations
but burying photos of the dead and those statues and fast enough is as creepy as it gets ..you see that on tv possibly
jmo
Perhaps it is as simple as - everything in the house was there during the murders of their parents and the kids didn't want to look at anything after the fact to remind them.

If you review ITO #12, which is linked on Ann Brocklehurst’s substack (Part 5), you will see there is *a lot* redacted. A lot more than in the earlier ITOs. I’m taking this as a good sign that progress is being made. MOO.

''Jul 2, 2023 SCHWARTZ/REISMAN CENTRE
Construction has begun at the site of the Joseph and Wolf Lebovic Jewish Community campus in Vaughan, Ont., for the Honey and Barry Memorial Arena. The $52-million dollar arena—to be attached to the existing Jewish community centre complex—is a gift from their son, Jonathon Sherman, to Toronto’s Jewish community. It would make the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto the first and only Jewish community in North America to own its own indoor ice hockey arena. With two NHL-sized rinks, stands, dressing rooms and a (likely) kosher snack bar, the arena will fill a void by providing ice facilities for young Jewish hockey players and figure skaters. It will also be open to rentals by the wider community. Jonathon Sherman admits the announcement brings “heavy emotions,” in part because the 2017 murders of his billionaire philanthropist parents remain unsolved. Sherman says he wants to focus on continuing their legacy of community-building. The CJN's Ellin Bessner visited the site and interviewed Vaughan city councillor Christopher Ainsworth, about how the project got the green light. ''

Does she not post here anymore? I saw that she was interacting with people on reddit but haven't seen her here.
