So hoping that somehow, someway, somebody will lead the way to Charles, my heart breaks for his mom, he is so beloved.

When a 20-year-old English tourist suddenly stops contacting his family while backpacking across Canada, his mother tries to raise the alarm. Police are slow to respond until an anonymous note prompts them to search a nearby lake. When a body is found, there is hope that it will help bring closure to the missing man’s family. But as Jules Knox reports, another twist in this story means that the case can’t be so easily closed.

Circumstances of Disappearance

Horvath, who was born in Canada but raised in the UK, was travelling in Canada in 1989. He had travelled from Quebec to Kelowna, BC. He was working at the Flintstones theme park and staying at Tiny Town Tent and RV Park on Lakeshore Road when he disappeared. Horvath left his tent and belongings at the campsite. He was last seen at work on May 26, 1989, and when he cashed his pay check at The Royal Bank at the Orchard Park shopping centre in Kelowna.

Foul play is suspected.

Re-posting the excellent Crime-beat episode featuring the disappearance of CH. This was posted on this thread earlier this year, but it looks like the link was taken down. Hopefully this link will work.

This is an excellent short doc. & IMHO went somewhat in-depth re: this MP case/Cold case?! It's evident that CH's mother DA was definitely instrumental in shining a light on her son's case. If it hadn't been for her, I suspect this wouldn't have even made the local news in the area ATT.

The '90's-era rough news footage in the doc. appears to be a series of VHS rips, which adds to the authenticity here.

The camp-ground seemed somewhat rough ATT. I suspect CH was out of his element there. It's still very unclear what happened here. We may never know, unfortunately.

As I posted earlier, I don't believe CH vanished in May '89, and then mysteriously appeared back in the area several months later - in July/August '89 (he was allegedly seen/heard that summer by some people who knew him). IMHO the July/August '89 "sightings" were red herrings, and it appears that the last time he was seen by anyone was in May.

Given that he appeared to have a very good relationship with his mother, I don't believe that he would have just cut off all contact with her for no reason...unless he was either deceased, or had some kind of a breakdown/amnesia.

''Darren Feist has stepped out of his short-lived retirement to work as a reservist with the RCMP in Kelowna and has taken on the files of four cold cases within the city.

It was just one month into his retirement when Feist jumped back into work and took over the files of missing persons Charles Horvath-Allan and Ashleigh Pettman and the unsolved murders of Sally Winter and Tina Parr.

Feist is looking at these cases with fresh eyes, having only joined the Kelowna detachment in 2017. He explained why he came back to work.''

"Serious crimes fell under my purview, and I would regularly meet with Denise Allan [Horvath-Allan's mom] and other family members who had come and routinely asked 'What's being done on my file?'" Feist said, explaining that Kelowna is a busy spot and when a new serious crime occurred old files were set aside and officers had to move on.''
"There wasn't a lot of time given to these historical files."

Charles Horvath went missing from Kelowna decades ago and his case is getting fresh eyes.

''Cases are decades old

The remaining three files are Charles Horvath, Sally Winter and Ashleigh Pettman.

Horvath went missing at 20 years old while on a gap year adventure in Kelowna. He was last seen on May 26, 1989 cashing a cheque at the Orchard Park Royal Bank.''

This linked story and picture has always bothered me as I see so many similarities between this man, Gerald Klassen (age 60 in 2020) and Charles Horvath (aged 52 in 2020).

Gerald Klassen was released from prison in 2020 after there was doubt regarding his conviction for a murder that happened in Merritt, B.C. in 1993. Charles went missing in 1989 from Kelowna, B.C.

Merritt, B.C. where Klassen lived is 120 km from Kelowna.

The first 2 pictures are Charles Horvath. The third photo is Gerald Klassen.
