CBC has headlines that BC and Manitoba are mandating indoor masking. Alberta is in a difficult situation with mandating any restrictions.

The provincial health minister declared that hospitalizations were no longer a concern after 70% of the eligible provincial population was vaccinated. That % is debatable, but that is what the gov't declared.

The federal government requested evidence that it was safe to drop all precautions. The provincial government said they need more time to prepare that evidence - even a couple of weeks after the request. That means the evidence was not documented prior to the decision.

The Alberta health minister claimed that her decisions were based on scientific evidence. She cannot reverse the decision to drop all precautions without admitting that she made a mistake with scientific evidence. Admitting a mistake means she should resign. She doesn't want to resign. Therefore Alberta will not mandate covid restrictions until the situation is critical.

... just an opinion

Does the 70% vaccination rate include people who have been fully vaccinated, or does it refer to people who may have only had one dose of a two-dose vaccine?

I don't remember exactly. I think that was 70% single dose of eligible people with the assumption that everyone with single dose would soon have both doses.

These are the facts as of Aug 7, 2021. It is based on population, not eligible population. As of mid-June, everyone over the age of 12 was eligible for the vaccine in Alberta.

This chart is interesting - clearly illustrates illness by age group.

That's weird. If there is no religious exemption, even for weddings, if I read this correctly, then a bride who has a religious exemption can't get married? Or a mother-of-the-bride who has a religous exemption wouldn't be able to attend her daughter's wedding? Or the pastor/minister/priest who has a religious exemption wouldn't be able to officiate at the wedding? Who would enforce this?

I'm not sure which religious groups would request a vaccine exemption - perhaps Jehovah Witness? Brides with religious exemption could be marrying grooms who have the same religious exemption.

My nephew was married over the weekend with a small ceremony and only close friends and parents. That's how it is during covid. People can wait, or they can simplify. It's an adjustment.

Jehovah's Witnesses are not opposed to vaccinations. I don't believe that any of the mainstream religions oppose vaccination. There are a few small fringe groups that don't believe vaccinations are necessary.

The article below mentions that Dutch Reformed may be opposed to vaccinations, but I am from a Dutch Reformed background and have never heard of any opposition.

Perhaps Hutterites? Regardless, I agree that religious exemption very likely applies to small religious groups. They can wait for the restrictions to be lifted to get married, and/or to practice religion as a group. Choices have consequences. That's life regardless of covid.

I know there has been some angst in the Catholic Church about any vaccines that come from aborted cells. They see it as a great moral dilemma and that the churches teachings are paramount. This, in spite of the Pope saying to get vaccinated.

I saw some Bishop sneering at the vaccines and stating that your life is in the hands of God, not a vaccine. Guess he took a wrong turn when he left the Middle Ages. (Not meant to offend but to add some levity to a dire, worldwide catastrophe). IMO

The Christian Scientists are often against any sort of medical intervention for similar reasons. You are in Gods’ hands.

Otto, I think when it comes to regional decisions about ‘rules’, we all have to be responsible for our own choices. The government will ditch masking, distancing etc but I’m in no hurry to go to the theatre, baseball games etc.

I’m thinking that I can probably live a ‘quiet life’ for as long as necessary.

Must admit that I suspect this coming winter may be a bit grim, so I will just shop when needed (order online and pickup) and avoid most people until COVID runs out of victims. Fingers crossed I don’t catch it.

Kudos to University Health Network in Toronto!

Their employees either have to have a medical exemption or show proof of vaccination by a certain date. Then, they get 2 weeks off, unpaid. If they still do not wish to be vaccinated, their jobs are terminated.

Personally, I hope this becomes a very popular choice for businesses everywhere. If the vaccines are not ‘mandated’ it makes a mockery of the whole idea behind Public Health.

MOO, IMO JMO

I'm with you. I currently order everything online. Today, masks were delivered to me. These are very good and include a plastic clip to connect the elastics at the back of the head:

Point 1 Nano Adult Mask

The return to in-person classes will inevitably result in higher numbers amongst children and young adults. They in turn with spread the virus to friends and family. That will spread the virus into the workplace. That's how it works with the common cold, which is a lot like covid.

And the Pope was very clear about the need to get vaccinated against COVID.

When the Pope was vaccinated in March, he stated that it was an ‘ethical obligation to be vaccinated against COVID.’
