Ontario will enter province-wide lockdown as of Christmas Eve, sources say
''All of Ontario will be under lockdown as of Christmas Eve, sources tell CTV News Toronto.

These sources, who have direct knowledge of the situation, say the lockdown will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Dec. 24 and will last for 28 days in the southern portions of the province and 14 days in the northern parts.

This lockdown will look similar to the province-wide shutdown back in March, with only essential businesses being allowed to remain open.''

I hope this is successful in bringing the case numbers back down and avoiding a post-Christmas disaster. I wish that this could have been put into place sooner, but I guess we need to keep the stores open for Christmas shopping, right? Bah!

I'm a bit concerned about the new and more contagious virus strain that has emerged in the area around London. Most articles focus on whether the vaccine is effective with the new strain.

What I want to know is : what does "more contagious" mean? We're masking, hand washing and being ever so cautious already, so how is this new strain more easily transmitted? Does it hang in the air longer, does it survive longer on surfaces - what do we need to know to protect ourselves from a strain that has mutated to transmit more easily?

What I find really tragic about this entire situation is that, when the virus was isolated to China, international travel was encouraged and promoted with an arrogant belief by experts that they could catch, contract trace and prevent global spread. That was a very serious mistake. China was isolating national regions to prevent spread, but China was not isolated even though that was the only hope of protecting the global community.

At least today it is well recognized that the only possibility of slowing spread is to close borders to areas with new mutations.

"The variant, referred to by some experts as the B.1.1.7 lineage, is not the first new variant of the pandemic virus to emerge, but is said to be up to 70 per cent more transmissible than the previously dominant strain in the United Kingdom, based on modelling.
...

The new variant has rapidly become the dominant one in cases of COVID-19 in parts of southern England, and has been linked to an increase in hospitalization rates, especially in London and in the adjacent county of Kent.
...

It has 23 mutations in its genetic code — a relatively high number of changes — and some of these are affecting its ability to spread."

So many people are looking for loopholes after fraudulently claiming and receiving Covid related CERB.

How hard is it for educated people to read the rules to be sure that net income is greater than $5000? One self-employed woman claimed $16k in CERB. She writes down her annual income as a loss to avoid paying taxes, which leaves her net income below $5000. She can run a business, but can't figure out CERB eligibility. I think it's sad that so many people claimed the money and now blame the government for that decision.

This business about receiving the wrong info in a phone call is bizarre since the phone lines were too tied up to make a call - yet all the ineligible people who claimed CERB anyway apparently made the phone call and received the wrong verbal information.

I hope Canadians don't have to absorb all the false CERB claims.

now the news says BoxingDay start? I'm confused cause yesterday they said Christmas Eve start

Lockdown to begin for all of Ontario on Boxing Day as province sees soaring cases
Yes LadyL it is effective at 12:01 on the 26th. Press was putting it out as Christmas Eve yesterday, before the formal presser today with Premier Ford. Press was wrong, imagine that LOL Ford said last Friday he would have meetings this past weekend and decide based on Dr's recommendations and announce it Monday at 1:00. Press should have waited until today when it was formally announced.

Most of your questions they are still investigating. A few answers here from yesterday you have e.g. is it more contagious. (areas with highest increases = places with this mutation) - Not yet associated with more severe disease and does not affect efficacy of vaccines.

September, first detection
November, London, about 25% of cases
December, London, over 60% of cases
Where did it come from?
High levels of genomic monitoring in the UK
Has spread from UK to Denmark, Australia, Netherlands

Thank you!

It sounds like this mutation is natural (covergent) and that the virus will mutate around the world regardless of closing borders.

We think we are such an evolved people, yet when it came to making important decisions regarding a dangerous virus, only the stupidest decisions were made.

In March, I stockpiled food and washed every item of food that came into the house with soap. Over time, I came to believe that I was over-doing it. I wonder whether that is what should be done going forward. More contagious might mean that it is able to survive longer on paper, plastic and other surfaces, or that it can enter the home on one surface and jump to another.

I hope there is good advice about how to remain safe going forward.
