I agree that this is a risk, but there are two guys missing. I don't see a cougar attacking both and no sign of them remaining. JMO.

Yeah, only reason I thought of it is the somewhat dense bush in the area. There were 2 fellows attacked just a couple of weeks ago down in the Cascades, 30 miles east of Seattle, WA. One man was killed, but the injured hiker was able to go for help; had he not been able to, IMO it's possible neither of them would have been found after being dragged into a cougar den. Certainly not the norm, but not unheard of, and cougar attacks do seem to be on the rise.

Mountain bikers in fatal cougar attack did everything right, authorities say

what if they wanted to start a new life together? could that fit?

I think you're more at risk from cougars and bears in that area, than being randomly attacked and murdered. But the key word is random.

Why would they bother to return to USA if this were the case?

Hmmmm i didn't think of that. It's certainly a possibility.

There are easier ways of doing that than ‘vanishing into thin air’ and causing a major search by LE etc and causing untold anguish to family & friends. IMO.

They returned to Canada, their home country.

B&UBM. I’m with you on that.

After this time, I agree with the wife, and her statement. Nothing else makes sense.
They are either victims and not longer alive, or being held somewhere, but for what purpose? There have been no ransom demands. Foul play is at hand, hard to say this but reality says no reason for an alternative.
Sadness for their loved ones.

Sorry I read Canada and wrote USA, time to get my glasses checked or spend less time on here.

I'm have no theories yet but I did notice that in the video of them one of them (don't know who is who) did walk away without waiting for the other. Just found it odd that he wouldnt wait for the other to get his backpack on and walk away together. Probably nothing but just stood out for me.

Hi ttcRider,

I noticed that as well. It made me think that the first man who grabbed his backpack was hurrying to ask someone for a lift. Other than that - it is odd.

Their gear looked so lumbersome, not to mention extremely heavy.

I wish there were cameras further along that area, especially towards where they were walking.

I still remember the case of a couple from Penticton who disappeared on a road trip to Vegas. They were seen on surveillance video at a gas station, but no sign of them after that. Seven weeks later she was found by ATVers, in her van, stuck off a remote track in the Middle of Nowhere, Nevada. The gps map had lead them astray when they'd tried to take a shortcut in the dark, having missed the correct turnoff and not wanting to double-back. The husband had tried to walk out but didn't make it.

I think, given the huge maze of logging roads going nowhere, between where they disappeared and where they were headed, some kind of mishap can't be ruled out.

ETA: they could have gotten a ride from, for eg, a travelling surfer who wanted to explore the backroads route, and doesn't keep in touch with anyone. The guys were pretty up for adventure, it seems.

There's only one road out of Uclulet, even if there was just one camera somewhere along there, police could be looking at which vehicles left at the time, might give them a clue.

At 00.23 on the surveillance video (below), in addition to the time marked on it - there is also "CH4". To me, this could be camera #4.

I've been searching for information about surveillance cameras on that property.

Here is an excerpt from a meeting concerning no camera surveillance towards the parking lot. (This is a "pdf" so I've copied and pasted the information concerning cameras:) (also, this is from 2016 so I'm searching for more recent info.):

"April Thefts on Boats & Attendance of Harbour Contractor

Commissioner Kimoto expressed what was stolen from the three boats, that the thief was caught on video but had a mask on; noted also there are no video cameras facing the parking lot; noted also that Port Alberni uses a gate at their facility

• Councillor Noel provided that people enjoy walking the docks, but that the District would need to take action if thefts become a problem; inquired if the District has video surveillance, to which Ms. O’Connor responded that the District has at least 3 cameras with improvements due to come via better quality system

Ms. O’Connor also provided that Council can add another camera to the budget for the parking lot, and that staff can speak to the Harbour Manager regarding placement and where additional surveillance might be beneficial

Mayor St. Jacques requested that the District get some feedback from the RCMP on how effective they believe surveillance cameras to be
• Councillor Mole suggested signage in the boat basin indicating that the area is under video surveillance •

Councillor Noel wished to confirm that the video feeds are visible by passerby of the harbour office, to which Ms. O’Connor confirmed they were

At the end of the above pdf of the council meeting, there is a report attached by the Harbour Master, Kevin Cortes (the last person to see the men).

One line in his report: "The new security cameras for both whiskey dock and 52 steps will be completed by the middle of March 2017."

I will keep searching for information about surveillance cameras there.

Yes, Satchie! or witnesses who may have seen something and didn't realize the importance of it? Even if they saw the backs of two men walking in a certain direction or getting into a vehicle?

His not waiting for his friend made me think they were loading stuff into a car, and therefore the first fellow was just taking his stuff to the car, so no need to wait for his friend. Perhaps they met someone who offered them a lift during the three days they were waiting for their boat to be cleared at Customs .
