On Aug. 31, 1997, he was asleep in his North York home when the unthinkable happened. Two armed intruders entered his house in the early morning hours, a struggle ensued between the killer, Bongiorno, and other family members.

Sadly, he was fatally shot in the frenzy that Karras called “senseless.” His son Nick was also shot in the leg.
One of the suspects is described as a 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-9 Black man with a medium build who was seen outside the crime scene by witnesses.

''Details of Investigation:​

On Sunday, August 31, 1997, at about 4:00 a.m., police responded to a shooting at 15 London Green Court. The victim was discovered inside an apartment residence, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts by emergency personnel, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Another person was also discovered in the same residence, suffering from gunshot wounds. This person was treated by emergency personnel, and is expected to survive his injuries.
