''Police say the killing of a woman at a Toronto massage parlour in February was an act of terrorism carried out by a 17-year-old who identified as an involuntary celibate, also known as an incel.

On Feb. 24, police responded to a reported stabbing at Crown Spa in the city's north end.

The victim, Ashley Noell Arzaga, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others, a man and a woman, suffered stab wounds but survived the attack.

Toronto police arrested a 17-year-old boy, who was charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder. As a minor, his identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Local investigators later contacted the RCMP's Integrated National Security Enforcement Team after uncovering evidence suggesting the attack may fit the Criminal Code definition of terrorist activity.''

The terrorism confronting Canada: Unsophisticated and frustratingly effective
''We need to find a way to stop dangerous opportunists online from dragging in people who are suffering and who need help, not, you know, not more hatred.”

Experts said prosecuting the massage parlour killing as terrorism would send an important message. It could also make Canadians more aware of what today’s terrorism looks like, Carvin said.

Canadians know about ISIS and almost certainly would do something if they thought someone close to them was getting involved with the group, but that may not yet be the case for right-wing extremists or incels, she said.

“The only way people are going to recognize this as violent extremism is if we treat it as violent extremism,” said the Carleton University terrorism and national security expert.''

Toronto Police, RCMP lay incel 'terrorist activity' charges in spa homicide - CityNews Toronto
''In a joint media release, they said it was determined that the crime was “one in which the accused was inspired by the Ideologically Motivated Violent Extremist (IMVE) movement commonly known as INCEL (involuntary celibate).”

''Shortly after the incident, Toronto police contacted the RCMP after finding evidence that the crime could be linked to a “terrorist activity” as per section 83.01(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada, which partly defines such activity as an act “in whole or in part for a political, religious or ideological purpose, objective or cause.”

''The accused appeared in court via video on Tuesday to face updated charges of first-degree murder — terrorist activity, invoking section 231 (6.01) of the Criminal Code and attempted murder, Section 239(1) – terrorist activity, invoking section 2, 83.01(b) and 83.27 of the Criminal Code.''

''The decision by Canadian authorities to lay terror charges in the case of a deadly stabbing believed to be fuelled by a hatred of women could finally force a reckoning of the country's definition of terrorism, with legal minds on various sides grappling with exactly what counts as an ideological motive, national security experts say.

The charges announced Tuesday in connection with the killing of 24-year-old Ashley Noell Arzaga at a Toronto erotic massage parlour represent the first time police have treated an alleged incel-inspired attack as an act of terrorism.''

''Adding a terror dimension to the case will undoubtedly make it more challenging for the prosecution to make its case, Roach pointed out. Not only will the Crown need to argue that the incel movement constitutes an ideology, he said. It will also need to show the attacker's goal was to intimidate a segment of the population. In this case, likely women.

Toronto criminal lawyer Nader Hasan is more skeptical. While terror laws have been unevenly applied in Canada, the concept of terrorism itself has been "a moving target," he said.''

This was an act of femicide. Wonder what the backstory is?

What is going on here?! Same age range as the van attacker, Minassian. Same with the B.C murders last summer. While the latter case is seemingly unrelated, I see shades of Incel in BS & KM. Also, the fact that they encourage others to commit violent acts is very reminiscent of Columbine and terrorist manifestos in general. (Jmo but seriously still do not understand why RCMP decided to share that piece of info about inspiring others and then in the next sentence state they didn't share the videos in case it inspired others, huh?)

All LE needs to do is insinuate themselves in online gaming and go into the dark web (even in the case of Brian Steven Smith from Alaska, met his wife while online gaming & recorded his crimes). It's like with BestGore and 4chan, there's a wealth of information out there on so many criminal activities that tie into this Incel thinking. Just browse through the comments, click on a user and check out their social media. Voila, you can see how many of these guys are really out there, documenting and sharing their radical views (again BSS of Alaska with his racist posts). When this happens, they should be flagged and watched just like terrorists. Instead, accounts and users are blocked, deleted and never investigated further.

RCMP adding incels to terrorism awareness guide
''The RCMP is preparing to add incels to its terrorism awareness guide, Global News has learned.

In a statement, the police force said it categorized incel attacks as a form of violent extremism.

It also said it was in the process of amending its Terrorism and Violent Extremism Awareness Guide, which currently makes no mention of incels.''

Canada has taken a hardening approach to incels following alleged attacks in Toronto in 2018, in Sudbury last July and, most recently, at a Toronto erotic massage parlour on Feb. 24.

''On May 19, a 17-year-old was charged with terrorism over the spa attack, marking the first time Canada’s anti-terrorism laws had been used against an alleged incel.

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service subsequently recognized incel attacks as a form of ideologically motivated violent extremism, or IMVE, in its annual report to Parliament.''

@dotr Best news I've read in awhile, thanks for sharing!!

Wonder if they can go back and re-classify the other Incel attacks such as the ones listed in the article? Also wonder what the criteria will be? There have been (Imo) a number (countless) of attacks on a smaller scale, perpetrators who target individuals in a different "style" of assault but whom would likely be considered Incel if enough digging were done.

When it's boiled down at the end of the day, "Incel" is just another word for misogyny.

ETA..
"........... a Toronto judge refused to name a man who killed 10 people and injured 16 others as she read his guilty verdict Wednesday, saying she would not help him achieve the infamy that had motivated his deadly rampage.''

The name of the accused's so-called incel hero, has been snipped bm. imo.

Carrying a 17-inch sword etched with the misogynistic phrase “Thot Slayer” and a note that said “Long Live the Incel Rebellion,” a 17-year-old boy walked into a North York erotic massage parlour in February 2020 and immediately stabbed receptionist Ashley Arzaga to death before he was disarmed by another woman, according to agreed facts read in court Wednesday.

The now 20-year-old, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, entered a plea of guilty to first-degree murder and attempted murder on Wednesday morning. It is alleged by the Crown that he was motivated by the hatred of women and the so-called incel movement, which has been linked to several other acts of violence around the world.

“I wanted to kill everybody in the building and I am happy I got one,” he told a paramedic who arrived shortly after the murder, according to the facts.

Later, in an interview with a police officer, he would say he was familiar with xxxxxxx, another Toronto man who claimed to be an incel and murdered 10 people and injured 16 with a rented van in North York in April 2018. xxxxxx is now serving a life sentence in prison.

xxxxxxx “was an inspiration,” he said in the interview.

“Especially so close in Toronto … I thought it was possible to do something like that as well.”

''According to the agreed statement of facts read in court Wednesday, the youth walked less than two kilometres from the basement apartment of his parents’ home to the Crown Spa, wearing a dark trench coat and sunglasses, around noon on Feb. 24, 2020.

His route and the violent murder were captured on a series of security cameras.

One video shows the teen stabbing Arzaga, a beloved 24-year-old mother to a then five-year-old girl, at least 42 times all over her body in less than a minute.''

I was un aware that INCELS were some sort of a group or have some loose organization? That is weird.

''The Toronto Police Service, meanwhile, said incels were part of its Countering Violent Extremism training “so that our officers can be informed and aware.”

''Who are incels and why can their actions be considered acts of terror?

The incel culture has only recently begun receiving in-depth study. The Department of Homeland Security in June awarded Georgia State University a $250,000 grant to study incel culture. The research is being led by Dr. John Horgan, a professor of psychology at the university.

"For me, incels are an online community of mostly heterosexual men and their self-worth is defined by what they would see as physical and sexual inadequacy," Horgan told USA TODAY. "Incels believe that most women deny them sex because those incels are physically unattractive relative to other men."

''The actions of the teen who repeatedly slashed a North York massage parlour receptionist 42 times with a sword, killing her and injuring her manager, were an act of terrorism, an Ontario Superior Court Justice found Monday in a "historical" decision in Canada.

On Tuesday, Ontario Superior Court Justice Suhail Akhtar found the attack to constitute terrorism for sentencing purposes, the Crown confirmed to CTV News Toronto.

This is the first time that an incel-related incident has been found to constitute an act of terrorism in Canada, Crown prosecutor Lisa Mathews said.

The term 'incel,' a shortened form of the phrase 'involuntary celibate,' has been defined as an ideologically-motivated form of violent extremism, often present in online subcultures or communities that hold gender-driven, misogynist worldviews.''

''The agreed facts state he was carrying a 17-inch sword etched with the phrase, “Thot Slayer,” and a note that said “Long Live the Incel Rebellion.”
