Burnaby RCMP is updating the public on the ongoing investigation to locate 11-year-old Kai Pavlovic.

On September 26, 2025, Burnaby RCMP received a request for a well-being check for Kai. As part of the investigation, police have spoken to Kai’s family members and have reason to believe Kai is staying with a caretaker who is unknown to police.

Over the next few days, various investigational avenues were pursued to try and confirm Kai’s whereabouts but have so far been unsuccessful. Numerous resources have been dedicated to this investigation, and officers are actively working around the clock to locate Kai.

“Our initial priority was to make people aware Kai was missing and to share his picture with the public,” said Media Relations Officer Cpl. Laura Hirst. “Our investigators are making every effort to find Kai, and we are asking for the public’s help as part of those ongoing efforts. If someone knows where Kai is, or is currently looking after him, we are asking them to contact the Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999 so we can confirm his safety.”

Kai is described as being:
• 11 years old
• 5’0”
• Thin build
• Brown hair

Burnaby RCMP would also like address questions from the public regarding an Amber Alert. Amber Alerts are activated in cases where an abduction has been confirmed and there is believed to be imminent danger to the child. At this point in the investigation, the information does not meet the criteria for issuing an Amber Alert.

NZ family of child missing in Canada have 'grave concerns'

An 11-year-old boy with family in New Zealand and Canada has gone missing in British Columbia.

"Kai has been living in Canada and had limited contact with family overseas the last 12 months. Recently concern for his wellbeing was raised by his deceased father's family and shared with his NZ family.

"This led the family to request a welfare check.

"All attempts to ensure Kai's wellbeing have failed and family have grave concerns for his safety. A missing-person investigation has been launched and appeals for sightings of Kai have failed to provide any leads.

"Family are heading to Canada to assist in the search for answers."

Based on what has been released, it sounds like Kai's mother has family in New Zealand.

Father is deceased, father's family contacted Kai's family in New Zealand.

Does that mean that the deceased father's family contacted Kai's mother's family in New Zealand?

Scenario could be that father's family tried to contact Kai. Twelve months have passed since they had contact with Kai. Mother might have told father's family that Kai is with an unnamed caretaker. Father's family contacted mother's family in New Zealand to request help to contact Kai ... and perhaps there is no unnamed caretaker.
