There is a RCMP detachment located in Gillam. They would deal with small crime stuff, etc. But there might only be 2 officers based at the detachment (due to the very small population in the area...and low need), so if something major happens, RCMP would shift resources there.

So LE is not 4 hours away.

Having said that, people simply don't understand how truly vast Canada is. Very few people live in such remote areas. You can find plenty of wildlife and beautiful "remote" places to visit without going anywhere near as far as Gillam is. More than 90% of Canada's population lives within 150 miles of the US border. We're like a skinny ribbon of people trying to stay warm. ;) Most of Canada's landmass is uninhabited and much of that is uninhabitable.

The trick to figure out the “why,” is to look at all the killers like this that have come before.

Why did those guys do it?

We don’t really have enough information to ascertain the specifics, but my guess is that we’re dealing with a couple angry guys who want to punish the world.

They may be out for some sort of sick adventure, and the killing is a necessary part of that.

There’s always a reason, but it’s never a good one.
When people want to punish the world, don’t they generally go where there’s a crowd of people to do it to, not to where they aren’t?

Thank you for your respectful explanation that LE is not, in fact, four hours away. I appreciate that.

"Mad Trapper" Johnson evaded capture for several months, during the Arctic winter.

But today, he would have been spotted quickly by thermal imaging.

Timeline

Key moments in the manhunt for two suspected B.C. killers
Three grisly killings in northern B.C. have led to a nationwide search for two young men suspected in their deaths.

Friday, July 12

- Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, leave their home town of Port Alberni, B.C., with a plan to look for work in Whitehorse, according to media reports quoting Schmegelsky’s grandmother.

Does anyone know if the two young men actually left on Friday, July 12, or ever made it to Whitehorse?

LE have never disclosed the exact route of the two. Within BC there are quite a few traffic cam locations which would also be helpful to LE in tracking the route of the fairly distinctive truck and camper, plus possible cellphone tracking.

B.C. Highway Cams
Is there any route from Dease Lake that would not take them across the first murder location on their way east?

I think the RCMP probably regret that crime scene photos were given to the press by the public, that international papers are publishing details like how Dyck died, and so forth. They like to keep a lid on evidence so they can have a good outcome in court, and having this stuff out there works against their interests.

I don't think the Canadian press will give AS's book any air. Just because they don't, doesn't mean they are not doing a good job in reporting. They are being responsible. The international press is being highly irresponsible.

I don't think the RCMP will speak to AS's book either.

I don't think it is necessary in any way shape or form for people to have this information. It is enough for people to know that there are armed and dangerous criminals out there. They don't need all the gory details. People are demanding sick entertainment. I think it is horrifying that there are uncensored photos of CD and LF out there.

A bigger evil to me = someone who possibly is able to pull this off and implicate other people. I'm not being delusional. Do I think there is a chance these guys did it, absolutely. But why. They were handed a truck and camper and none of the "oh they only had so much money because they worked at Walmart" doesn't buy the theory they were poor. That house that KM's family has is worth a lot of money. They wouldn't let their son go without money or supplies on his little look for work vacation. They possibly supplied the truck and camper. Their insurance is screwed now and they won't recoup that loss. We got to think of the big picture here.

Who would this malevolent actor be, and what would be his, her, or their motives? To me, the scenario you describe seems unlikely. I realize the authorities haven't disclosed everything they know about the case with the public, but it's reasonable to assume they have good reason for naming this duo as suspects and charging them with crimes. What's more, the suspects have intentionally evaded capture. If they had nothing to do with what happened and could prove their innocence, why would they run, especially to remote parts of the country where they are putting their health and lives at risk?

So the closest local level police force in this area did not have jurisdiction? So do people really call the RCMP if you live there and are robbed? I’m trying to understand how smaller crime is dealt with in the area.
Most reservations in northern Manitoba have their own police not rcmp.the rcmp have no rights on reserve land .the rcmp can’t search a reserve house with out either permission from chief or a special Court approval. A lot of reserves have their own justice . Like if your caught selling drugs or bringing alcohol on a dry reserve your kicked out of your house and off the reserve.

Yes. This kind of thing reminds me more of a serial killer picking off hitchhikers.

So let’s say they committed suicide in the woods. Would thermal imaging still be able to find them for a time?

I honestly can’t decide if they are dead or have evaded capture and moved on.

Published BC crime rates suggest that a place like Dease Lake (pop 303) could perhaps expect roughly 5-6 incidents over a period of 12 months, which includes drug offenses, violent crime and property crime.

Kam McLeod & Bryer Schmegelsky MAY have changed their appearance & inadvertently been given assistance to leave the area by someone that was not aware of who they were. If anyone out there is hesitant to come forward – it is crucial for you call police immediately. #rcmpmb

It is critical that all Canadians remain on the lookout for Kam McLeod & Bryer Schmegelsky. If seen, do not approach, call 911 or local police immediately. #rcmpmb

Cool as cucumbers aren't they. Doesn't it look like they just dropped off, or picked something up from the area they are walking from?

No. Standard thermal imaging is useful for warm bodied animals and vehicles with warm engines.

I thought thermal imaging has been used to find bodies in water. I guess that’s something else. So if they are dead in the woods, it’s unlikely they will be found soon.

Ms. Schmegelsky left town because she felt that she was being harassed by the media, according to the head of the Port Alberni Chamber of Commerce.
Luckily she has somewhere to go. People who hound her disrespect not only the emotions and mental health of the family members, but also disrespect that people have to live - they need to go to work, get groceries, run errands, see people....and the hounding prevents those very necessary and ordinary tasks from getting done. Heaven forbid someone run an errand with messy hair or pick up fast-food for dinner - the whole world would pass judgement. I can understand reaching out for comment, but not hounding.

Actually, there’s an interesting article on PubMed about using FLIR to find dead bodies up to 21 days after death due to the heat generated by insect masses in the cadaver...lovely Sunday morning thought I know...that’s Sunday morning local time ;)

Helicopter thermal imaging for detecting insect infested cadavers.

The remoteness of these crime scenes certainly seems to have been a deliberate choice by these killers.

They were going to Yukon when they came across a blue van stopped on the side of the Alaska highway.

They were returning from Yukon via the only other highway, and wanted a new vehicle.

They left all three bodies visible to passing cars, but really thought that they had removed all identifying documents.
