Niton Junction-area residents are expressing relief after police arrested Travis Edward Vader -- a person of interest in the disappearance of St. Albert seniors Lyle and Marie McCann.

"We're very happy," said Leona Hewins, who lives down the highway from the house where Vader was arrested at 2 a.m. Monday by the RCMP's Emergency Response Team, Edmonton Police Service tactical officers and a team of sheriffs.

Vader walked peacefully out of the home half a kilometre south of MacKay, where he was arrested, said RCMP K-Division spokesman Sgt. Tim Taniguchi....

With no fixed address, Vader was known to have crashed at the house last spring.

Hewins said she hasn't seen Vader around the house since.

"I got up about 3 a.m. (Monday), and there were policemen and everything down the road. I don't know how he got there," she said. "I didn't think (Vader) was around here at all. I thought he was maybe long gone somewhere.

Here are my thoughts on the case today, FWIW:

1. LE is being very, very vocal about STILL wanting to know if anyone seen the whereabouts of the McCann's SUV from July 5th to July 16th, even after yesterday's recent events. WHY? I think it's because TV and ?, were the two people who were seen driving "slowly" in Prince George (yes, I believe the sightings there to be true), and I think the McCann's have been put "somewhere", hence the request.

2. I am unsure if the picture of the forensic team photographing the SUV on the car carrier was taken in the exact place it was recovered (in the photo, the SUV was on a car carrier, not in the bush as the aerial shot showed), but the drivers side door and back door were open, and the photog LE was definitely taking pictures of the back seat. I just don't know if the SUV was recovered with the doors open (and they loaded the SUV on the carrier that way, which is unlikely), or if LE opened the doors themselves, and felt it necessary to photograph the back seat. There must have been a reason to photograph the backseat.

3. Regarding the time TV was arrested. The distinction between "early in the morning" and "in the middle of the night" I was getting at yesterday, is that "TV was taken by suprise and arrested while leaving the home".

Where was TV going at 2 a.m.?

I think LE was watching DB's house, possibly since DB gave the interview on Saturday. So, the question is, was DB "hiding" TV? I think LE was setting up and waiting for TV to exit the house, and they were preparing to enter if and when necessary. One video I watched interviewed the neighbour, and he let LE use his home.

4. DB's house was "within sight of the Vader family home". Wow. That's kind of crazy, he was so close.

5. LE has said that "they have information that TV has knowledge of the whereabouts of the McCann's". I wonder what the information is? From phones/computers/3rd party????

6. I am sure LE is using divide and conquor techniques in their interviews.

7. Why, why, why were these crimes committed?

8. Where are the poor, innocent McCann's ???? :-(

One more thing.

If DB was giving interviews to the press AND harbouring a fugitive, he must have had personal motivation himself to deflecting attention away from TV.

Or perhaps he was working with LE?!

Glad they finally found and arrested this monster...:behindbar

Now hoping and praying we find this sweet couple today. :praying:

Wondergirl, I'm sure LE must have taken many more pictures than just that one angle we are seeing here. They HAVE to take pictures of the crime scene and surrounding area. The SUV is also considered a crime scene, and IMO it was found with the doors closed, but at that point nobody knew for sure WHAT or WHO they might find inside the SUV. The perp(s) could have been in there sleeping or hiding, and also the McCanns might have been inside the SUV, so obviously LE had to open the doors, and take pictures.

I still don't know what to make of the way the SUV looks (all muddy), and the tipsters in PG saying that the car looked as if it had been in water. Also IIRC, one of the tipsters mentioned something about 'rocks' inside the SUV? Did someone remember reading that? Could that mean the perp(s) drove the SUV around a lake/river shore? Did they attempt to submerge the SUV weighing it down with rocks? That SUV surely contains lots of evidence, not only of the perp(s) that stole/drove it, but evidence will aso reveal if the McCanns were put in the backseat at any point.

Wondergirl, I understand exactly what your question is aiming at, and I think we are all thinking the same, but it is just too hard to say it :(

Hi Hazel, I don't remember seeing anything about the tipsters thinking that the SUV looked like it had been in water. I know that some people here thought the mud marks on the side of the SUV looked like the car had been in water. I hadn't heard anything at all about rocks in the SUV, how could tipsters see that? Unless they were in a taller vehicle, or saw the SUV parked. If true, than it would seem that there was an attempt to submerge the vehicle but then the vehicle was found back in Alberta, not in P. George. This scenario would mean that someone drove the SUV back to Alberta after someone tried to sink it.

Travis Edward Vader is expected to make his first appearance in court Tuesday morning.

RCMP arrested Vader and an unnamed man following an early morning raid early Monday morning at a rural residence near Niton Junction.

Identified as a person of interest in relation to the disappearance of Lyle and Marie McCann, Vader was also wanted on outstanding warrants and surrendered peacefully to law enforcement authorities.

Vader will appear in court to speak to a charge of possession of stolen property laid last November.

At least now with two people being questioned in connection with this case, they can use them against each other! Hopefully one or both will spill answers. I can honestly see DB giving up whatever he knows in hopes of saving himself. I would hope though there would be some sort of charges brought forth against DB at least in regards to harbouring a fugitive.

Hazel, I agree with you here, I don't think the SUV was found with doors open either, ONLY because of the Aerial picture showing it in the bush. For me, the odd thing is that even while the car carrier was about to tow it away, forensic photogs were still taking pictures of the back seat. I know in the video of the SUV being towed away, that all the doors were closed.

BBM above: Do you have link for this regarding the rocks? I do not remember reading that, and would be interested in doing so.

I also noticed in the pics that the immense amount of dirt 2/3rds of the way up on the vehicle indicated some "off road" use, but also, there were "smudge" marks on the one side, as you could see in the video. It looked like someone had been leaning/wiping against the side of the SUV, as the "dirt marks" were "cleaner" where the smudging had happened. I will find the spot in the video and indicate it here if anyone is interested in having a look.

One other thing on the SUV, I did notice that there was a towing apparatus attached to the SUV on the front.

I am sure that the odometer reading on the SUV will prove extremely useful. I am hoping that Mr.McCann had the vehicle serviced prior to their trip. I am sure he was very attentive with things like that, since he drove trucks for a living.

Here is a closer look at the home where TV was arrested:

http://www.timescolonist.com/news/c...Kay+home+where+Vader+found/3295805/story.html

MACKAY, ALBERTA — About 3 a.m. Monday on a pitch-black rural highway, tactical police officers converged on a dilapidated acreage home in the tiny hamlet of MacKay, looking for fugitive Travis Vader.

RCMP have identified Vader as a "person of interest" in the disappearance of elderly St. Albert couple Lyle and Marie McCann, who haven't been seen since July 3.
Police later reported they found Vader inside, and he was arrested on outstanding warrants not related to the McCann disappearance.

Police confirmed late Monday they also took a second man into custody, but he has not been charged and cannot be named.

It is just up the road from the home where Vader grew up and where his parents still live, and a short distance from the bar in Nojack where he and his buddies drank.

The house is little more than a stone's throw from the MacKay Community Hall, where more than 100 people gathered Sunday to talk about starting a rural crime watch to deal with the rash of thefts and break-and-enters that, for the first time, have many people in the area locking their doors.

Many believe there is a crystal methamphetamine problem in town and that addicts are behind the break-ins.

RCMP said they expected to scour the house into Tuesday.

and

I got up about 3 a.m. (Monday), and there were policemen and everything down the road. I don't know how he got there," she said. "I didn't think (Vader) was around here at all. I thought he was maybe long gone somewhere.

"It was quite a surprise.

"We don't associate with (Bulmer). He's just a simple guy. He's got no family. We just don't bother him."

A manhunt for Vader put Niton Junction area residents on edge over the past week.
"You can see the relief on people's faces. They want this matter resolved. There's less tension in the air, put it that way," said Rick, who works at a hotel in Niton Junction.

One other thing on the SUV, I did notice that there was a towing apparatus attached to the SUV on the front.

This towing apparatus would have been used to tow the SUV behind the RV. If you remember, Brett McCann mentioned back in some of the first interviews he did, that this would be a distinguishing feature on the SUV.

Lyle and Marie McCann's granddaughter says her family believes they are one step closer to finding them.

Nicole Walshe says her father, Bret McCann, received a phone call from the RCMP regarding Travis Edward Vader's arrest, while he was sleeping.

"He got a phone call at two in the morning," said Walshe. "[RCMP] just saying they had Vader in custody in Edson detachment."

The McCann's say the RCMP are keeping them in the loop, however they still don't know what information RCMP have on Vader that made them so interested in the first place.

""We haven't been told anything," said Walshe. "We're just thinking this is one step closer to finding grandma and grandpa. He may know something we don't know."

Although Vader is in custody, Walshe says it's important the public still stays involved in her grandparents' disappearance. A Facebook page created by the family has more than 28,000 signatures, with many offering to distribute posters.

"If they see the SUV, or the motor home, or Vader or grandma and grandpa's photo; photos of any of those things, it might trigger something in their memory." Walshe said. "So it's still relevant."

The 31-year-old granddaughter says while it may seem silly, she is more optimistic that they will find her grandparents; this, despite the fact no one has heard from Lyle and Marie since they left on vacation July 3rd.

"Every fibre of my being feels 100% that we will find them and they will be okay," said Walshe. "I honestly truly believe that."

matou, I'm pretty sure I read about "rocks" but now I think it was not in a news article. There was a thread in the Facebook group, and this girl mentioned a few things that non of us have heard about. I'm looking for that thread, but apparently it has been deleted. Perhaps RubyRed remembers reading about it; will go look for Ruby's quote of that thread.
Now I see the problem about those posts by people that seem to have "insider'' info; after a while we get all mixed up, and think that what we read was 'official' :(

Found Ruby's post. The link is no longer working, so seems that thread was indeed removed:

The man named as a person of interest in connection to the missing persons case of a St. Albert couple is expected to make his first appearance in court Tuesday morning.

Travis Edward Vader, along with an unnamed man, was arrested Monday following an early morning raid at a rural residence near Niton Junction. The unnamed man has since been released from custody and has not been charged. Police have not released the individual's name.

Vader, 38, remains in custody on three unrelated possession of stolen property charges. He was expected to appear in an Edson courtroom Tuesday morning, but his lawyer appeared instead and asked to be taken off the case.

Just after 10 a.m., defence lawyer Brad Thomlinson told the judge Vader repeatedly fails to come to court and he doesn’t want to represent him anymore.

The judge told Thomlinson he needed to speak directly to Vader about being removed from the case and dispatched Thomlinson to the local RCMP detachment in Edson to speak with his client. Thomlinson is expected to return to court later today to report back to the judge.

It is not yet clear whether Vader will be required to appear in court.

Vader is also scheduled to appear in court in Edmonton on July 27, for other unrelated, pre-existing charges
