OMG this is my hometown and neighbourhood (London attack)...... I though Tori was close to home! Until recently I thought things like this only happen in America, but since joining WS I'm learning it's the style of reporting that gets it out there. Michael Morre pointed out in Farenheit 911 that America's news attampts to scare the public. Is Canada's lulling the public into a false sense of security/safety?

Absolutely! This has been a pet peeve of mine for a few years. Our media is one step up from Iran's Press News, imo. We have none of the hard hitting interviews I see in the US media. Fox News may be a pain in the butt to the gov, but as Ms Obama said on LKL, dissent is good, free speech welcomed. Democracy allows all viewpoints to be expressed. My Canadian press and fed gov scare me, lately...

And this weaves into this case. Our perp is a gov employee. Will the gov/military be transparent? And will the media report it?

I think of the female officer killed overseas when Williams was heading that base...was it Camp Mirage? Nothing worse when a possible murder is labeled a suicide. More victimizing the victim.

If there was ever a childhood to prepare someone for the transient existence of an Air Force colonel, Russell Williams lived it - a meandering journey that saw him twice change his last name, and took him from England to barren northeastern Ontario to Canada's most prestigious boys' school.

Born on March 7, 1963, in the Midlands region of England, young Russell was quickly uprooted for a new life in Chalk River, Ont.

The 800-person village, which is home to Canada's premier nuclear research laboratory, was hiring experts - including Russell's father David Williams, a metallurgist.

David and his wife, Nonie, had another son, Harvey.

The marriage soured and they divorced. But in the remote and frigid Upper Ottawa Valley, Ms. Williams found love again, and married Mr. Sovka, in 1970.

In the mid-1980s, he studied politics and economics at the University of Toronto's Scarborough satellite - a campus that was haunted by a series of unsolved rapes at that time.

His father, David Williams, is believed to be in the United States. His mother, who split up with Jerry Sovka about a decade ago, is a physiotherapist at a Toronto hospital. His brother, Harvey Williams, is a Bowmanville, Ont. medical doctor.

CBC NEWS TV at 4:25 pm EST

Williams has given a statement that "led police to the body of Jessica Lloyd and based on that statement police are looking into other unsolved crimes"

I'm trying to figure out what could be so distinctive about tire treads that would give probable cause for a search warrant. I want to know what tires they were. Maybe they had already researched which tires the treads match up to and knew that only x amount were imported/sold in that area or in Ontario or even in all of Canada. Hmm. I thought the search warrants came after his confession too. I'm a bit confused now.

This must have already been answered (my apologies if so). What I read or most likely heard from one of Mr. Jones interview, is that those were not just any regular / all-season tires, but expensive SNOW / WINTER tires that he had in his Pathfinder SUV.

hmmm wonder why he has changed his last name...twice!

Don't forget that his first name is actually David. So, David Russell "Russ" Williams Sovka.

There is a recurring theme on these boards of people involved in such cases using multiple names. Just a coincidence, I'm sure. Oh, and the result of broken homes.

I know a woman who likely knows him, too. She grew up in Chalk River, her Dad was in the same profession as Williams Dad, a nuclear scientist, and worked for Atomic Energy. Small world...

Yearbooks for Birchmount Park Collegiate in the late 1970s show a young Williams, then using his step-father's last name Sovka, with a faint smile in both his first and second years.

The Globe and Mail reported today that Williams finished his high school education at Upper Canada College before going to the University of Toronto's Scarborough campus.

Williams is also featured prominently in photos of the school's band in the back pages of the yearbook

This link is his step father speaking out...

Halifax Police have confirmed that three young women were murdered while Williams was stationed in Shearwater, N.S., in 1992.

Williams used the name Sovka while a student at Upper Canada College between 1980 and 1982 and reverted to his birth father’s name at some point before starting a sterling military career that saw him promoted to colonel last year at age 45 and given command of CFB Trenton. He turns 47 in three weeks, on March 7.

You are absolutely right Summersolstice. He reverted his stepfather's name to a much more common name. Some combinations:

- David Sovka
- Russ Sovka
- Russell Sovka
- David R. Sovka
- David Russ Sovka
- David Russell Sovka

- David Williams
- Russ Williams
- Russell Williams
- David R. Williams
- David Russ Williams
- David Russell Williams

IS anyone else finding it odd that a scientist is also missing from Ottawa, Lachlan Cranswick,
who also worked for the Atomic Energy Laboratories? His front door was open and his wallet, GPS etc were still inside the house. There is a thread for him here at WS. I just found it odd.

RW and Lachlan Cranswick both photographed birds:

This was posted earlier in this thread by a WSer:

Former air force Sgt. Bob Gagne said he's "devastated" over the charges laid against his friend and former neighbour Russ Williams.

Gagne, who lived across the street from Williams and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Harriman, for 13 years, said the man he knows and the one currently in jail accused of murders and sexual assaults are two different people.

It may have been said already, but in addition to heartfelt sympathy to the victims family and friends, I'd also like to express sympathy to those who served with RW who must feel incredibly saddened and betrayed by his heinous crimes. Though I've never served, many in my family are career military, including many who have served in combat zones. The camaraderie, support and trust they all have for each other is vital to their mission. It's a shame RW betrayed so many.

Isn't this what is called the use of aliases? I wonder if that sent up a red flag when he joined the military?

I'm a widow, too...it's a gift to love a man till the day he dies, imo...and my real name is Penny! :)

I hear you on the locked doors. We come from a rural area where people rarely lock doors, we have no crime. I do not recall one police incident in my small village of 500. Except for an occasional fight at the local bar...;) It can provide a false sense of security when a slimeball like Williams slithers in...

As much as I want to think that they had a fighting chance I don't think they did. And no amount of backlash at the LE officials or the Military will change the fact that these events happened. Blame does not lie on the shoulders of the police for not telling us soon enough, nor does it lie on the shoulders of the military who promoted him. It was the act of one man, not an entire army. :( I feel horrible about what has happened. Maybe people within the community will start becoming more aware of how they could best protect themselves now. A mother can hope anyways.

Let's not forget the betrayal of Marie France Comeau, who was serving under RW's command. Or her father, a former military man himself, who is now speaking out on behalf of his daughter.

To have a commanding officer stand accused of murdering a subordinate? I hadn't heard of such a thing, until now.

Williams was posted to the Shearwater base near Halifax from 1992 to 1994. During that time, police report three unsolved homicides.
1994. During that time, police report three unsolved homicides.

- Andrea King, 18
On Jan. 1, 1992, Andrea King, 18, flew to Halifax, N.S., from New Westminister, B.C., to find work. She called her sister from the Halifax airport and said she intended to stay at a hostel. She was to phone her family the next day, but was not heard from again. Despite a year-long missing person investigation being conducted in Halifax and New Westminister, B.C., no trace of King was found and police were unable to positively identify anyone who had contact with her after her arrival in Nova Scotia.
On Dec. 22, 1992, her skeletal remains were found in a wooded area in Lower Sackville, N.S. The cause of death was determined to be a homicide.

- Shelley Denise Connors, 17
Shelley Connors went missing from her Halifax home on May 29, 1993, and was reported missing by her mother the following day. Her body was discovered in a wooded area of Spryfield, N.S., on June 1, 1993, partially covered with leaves and branches. The Nova Scotia government is offering a $150,000 reward in the case.

- Kimber Leanne Lucas, 25
Kimber Leanne Lucas was last seen on Nov. 23, 1994, early on the day of her death. Lucas was known on the Halifax streets as a heavy drug user and was seven months pregnant. Her body was discovered behind a building on North Street near Agricola Street. The Nova Scotia government is offering a $150,000 reward in the case.

In 1990, Williams had his first posting at the central flight school in Portage la Prairie, Man., near Winnipeg.

- Glenda Morrisseau, 19

Glenda Morrisseau, a student at R.B. Russell School, was last seen on July 17, 1991, at 2:30 a.m. in Winnipeg hitchhiking. She was reported missing by her sister several days later when she did not return home.

After nearly a month of searching, Morrisseau's partially naked and battered body was discovered on Aug. 7, 1991, in a St. Boniface industrial area, about five kilometres from where she was last seen. The cause of death was not easily determinable, but there was considerable damage to her face including fractured cheekbones, a broken jaw and a fractured eye socket. As such she may have died as a result of massive trauma to the head inflicted by a large blunt object.

It is believed that Morrisseau was killed on or about July 17, 1991, shortly after she was last seen.

BELLEVILLE — Did he spot her on a Friday night at a popular dance club here? Or did they cross paths at the Poplar Golf Course where they both golfed? These are places both slaying victim Jessica Lloyd and her alleged killer, Col. Russell Williams, were known to have hung out.

But with 27-year-old Lloyd there is a working theory the alleged killer may have spotted her in a nightclub, or at the golf course, where several sources have said they both frequented.

I am currently in the process of being verified. I spoke to my military friend who worked alongside him every day (pretty near anyway), and he said RW would show up at the same time ,every day. That he was very down to the second type of a guy, but that no one really knew anything personal about him. He also said that the day RW was stopped on the roadside stop on 37, that he was driving his Pathfinder SUV with very distinct tires but could not remember the brand. He also drove a BMW but was not on that given night.

He still cannot wrap his head around it, as I don't believe many do at the moment. They were all spoken to about if anyone had information, they need to come forward as soon as possible to the proper authorities.

He also mentioned that RW was the one to "volunteer" his efforts and dispatch the elite aerial search that looked for Jessica in the following days.

I thought this was awful, because if he indeed volunteered his time, or extra time, then surely he either A) controlled where they looked and did not stray outside of that or B) Figured because of his rank that even if they did find her, then him volunteering would take the spotlight away from him, clearly. JMO

R.I.P. Jess, this is still so hard. Everyone is town is talking about it and it cannot be escaped
This is so awful Pjgrrrl :( this monster was for the ultimate control and power. It is like for him this was a strategy game. I think strategy is a word we could be hearing a lot from profilers about this "THING" (can't call him a person, nor a man, nor human being).
I am so SO SAD that he was not caught earlier so Jessica's and Marie's lives would have been spared, as well as all the suffering his 2 other victims went through (an all other victims that could possibly emerge), and all families and friends and people this THING hurt so badly.
Thank Gawd he was caught before he did more monstrosities and before he got promoted to even higher/strategic position. just looking at his picture makes me feel :yuck:
