Good morning.

I’ve just finished reading the Toronto Star’s extensive coverage of this case and one thing jumped out at me. In spite of RW’s long-standing reputation as a trusted, high-ranking officer, not one person of his acquaintance has been quoted as saying he might be innocent of these charges. More often than not in these situations someone is interviewed who says things like, “No way. I’ve known this guy for years and he couldn’t have done this. They must have the wrong guy. The trial will surely exonerate him.” Etc., etc. But no one has said anything like this. The closest they’ve come is to ask “how?” - as in how could they have not known.

I believe that this indicates that LE has told at least some of these acquaintances (especially those in the military) that either RW has confessed, or that they have irrefutable evidence against him, or a combination of both. It will be interesting to see if his wife or other relatives will agree to be interviewed and what they may have to say.

I'd love to hear someone's thoughts on profiling him. Also, did it seem like he went for a standard woman, or was he just opportunistic in his approach? I mean, he must have known that these women were home alone at that given time- because Comeau had a boyfriend that just happened to not be in while it was happening. My thoughts are that he was a base commander who worked long hours, always leaving and going in the dark- so where did he get his time to plan this?

I'm curious where you're seeing the "gentleman" here. All I see is the anger and sadist profile. From what we've been told about the victims and the circumstances of the attacks, it seems that he stalked them first, determined that they would be alone, and then pounced. Even people who work long hours get time off. I suspect he may have followed them in his car at night and waited for his opportunity. I believe that it will be determined that RW fits the profile of a sadistic sociopath and that more crimes will be revealed in the near future. I'll be very surprised if Kathleen MacVicar isn't one of them.

According to the search warrant, OPP were searching for computer digital storage devices, a black La Senza bra, a purple La Senza bra, thong underwear with a poodle, two baby blankets, pornographic photos and videos, white shoes, and zip ties, among other items.

Mr. Jones said that the "special tires" on Williams's vehicle tipped off police to his possible involvement in the murders. Mr. Jones said police had been looking for a specific type of tire tread marks matching those connected to the disappearance of Ms. Lloyd.

"There were special tread designs on his tire," said Mr. Jones. "They stopped him and recognized it after he left."

Mr. Jones said OPP investigators "went to Ottawa to compare treads."

Mr. Jones said he obtained his information through personal contacts in the OPP.

The Quinte West police reported four sexual assaults last September. The September 17, 2009 incident involved the K-9 unit. Where did that search lead? Were the dogs able to track the attacker? Did he flee on foot, or take off in a vehicle?

I hope that the Quinte West police will be reviewing all unsolved sexual assaults since Williams moved to the area back in 2004.

A knife has been mentioned in other posts. Wouldn't a fisherman have a knife? Perhaps he'd have some spare fishing line, too.

We will never know if this man's activities were known to the Military Police, or military intelligence. JTF2 is based at CFB Trenton. How could a crack anti-terrorist team not see the nose in front of its face, so to speak? Here is information from Wikipedia about this team:

"On 21 December 2006, a Federal Court judge rejected a request to proceed with a court martial against an unnamed JTF2 officer, accused of assaulting and mistreating a subordinate, because court martial requests require that the accused be named. The judge suggested that they explore other avenues to proceed with the court martial."

This begs the question: did the military know about Williams' activities for some time and play a role in covering that activity up? Did the DNA tests and co-operation with the local police forces happen to come as a result of knowing the jig was up, so he'd have to be served on a platter? Is there accountability to the Canadian public in the case of members of the military, particularly high-ranking officers, who commit crimes?

Julian Sher's book about the Lynne Harper case suggests that the military has not been entirely forthcoming or co-operative in the past. There were members of the military with records in that 1959 case who were not investigated, or not properly investigated. Some might say pertinent information was concealed, or withheld. Has anything changed in the past 50 years?

These are questions that need answers. Is image more important than justice?

I don't think what his friend said contradicts at all what you said. I took it as he believe he is guilty, but is going to be there if he needed for the emotional support of friend.

"I can't believe it. I've been sitting at home all afternoon trying to think — you know, in hindsight — and there's not a thing. I can't put my finger on a damn thing. Absolutely nothing where you say 'Geez, that's right. I should've seen that.'



Now with Williams facing a litany of charges, White said he'll support his friend, though he can't see how the police could be so wrong about something so important.



"I'm going to stand behind Russ because a man has to be considered innocent until proven guilty, but you have to have confidence in law enforcement that they don't charge a person like this without pretty good evidence."

I don't think it's quite correct to say that they had recently moved to Ottawa. They had recently bought that particular house in Ottawa.

From what I recall, they had been based in Ottawa back in the 1990s. We don't know that Mary Elizabeth Harriman followed her husband on all of their moves. She had a career in Ottawa. I am under the impression that they were leading separate lives during the week, and meeting up in Ottawa or Tweed on weekends.

I think it will be relevant for police to visit all of their previous residences. Remember Bernardo, and what he had hidden in his house?

Oh ITA & I am sure questions will be coming soon, as the shock wears off. It will be interesting to see if we get answers though. I hope we don't see a publicity ban go into effect, but I have a strong feeling it will be done!

Ok, so the attacker took "souvenirs" of underwear. This is common practice for many rapists and serial killers. But two baby blankets?!? WTH? Would they have contained DNA evidence, or does this guy have serious childhood issues?

I have no doubt this case will be up for discussion in Parliament.

SS, I didn't say that they had recently moved to Ottawa. I was just wondering if the Ottawa neighbours may not have been given the same information (about evidence) that the military and Belleville acquaintances were.

We mustn't forget that RW spent (at least) six months out of the country between 2005 and 2006. I hope LE will look for similar crimes there during that period, as what better opportunity for a predator than a foreign country where he'll only be staying for a short time?

Then, on Nov. 25, Cpl. Marie-France Comeau, 37, was found slain in her home in nearby Brighton. On Jan. 29, 27-year-old Jessica Lloyd disappeared. Her body was recovered Monday, the day after Williams was arrested.

Police are not revealing the details surrounding the murders. They have said that in both sexual assaults, the victims were surprised in their homes late at night. They were tied to chairs. They were photographed by their assailant. A report in the Toronto Sun provided details of one attack, which included an unhurried intruder who seemed calm throughout.

Torstar News Service asked Mark Safarik, one of the FBI’s serial-killer hunters with the famed Behavioral Analysis Unit, about the likelihood that crimes like that were the work of a first-time offender.

“For me, the surprise is the number of assaults in a relatively short period of time,” Safarik says. “He’s obviously intelligent. He’s careful. So what’s happening with him? Is there some sort of mental decompensation? Did something trigger this?”

According to the profile of this sort of violent sex offender, “Usually there’s a progression,” Safarik says. “First, prowling, peeping, non-violent paraphilic (sexually deviant) stuff, voyeuristic activities. At some point, offenders decide that’s not enough. They’ll cross that line into fantasy fulfillment. He may have acted out with willing partners initially, prostitutes or others. And then that isn’t enough of a thrill, and he crosses over into non-compliant victims.”

The offender in the latest crimes sounds like someone at the mature end of that progression, Safarik believes.

“He’s comfortable in the environment. He’s breaking in. He’s staying for long periods of time. He’s engaged in other activities – binding, photographing. That isn’t typically behaviour that just starts.”

Safarik suggested that, aside from other violent sex crimes, police will be looking for reports of unsolved “precursor” crimes in places where Williams has lived.

“I would be looking for cases where we tend to see sexual components that aren’t necessarily seen as sex crimes,” he says. “For instance, night-time burglaries where someone’s house is broken into but nothing is stolen. Or fetish-type burglaries, where they’re taking clothing.”

The search will be complicated by several factors, Safarik says. First, there’s Williams’ job.

“He’s in the military. That’s a problem. Not only has he moved around, the people around him have moved around.”

There’s also a massive time gap to fill in.

“I’d be checking back into his late teens. I’d probably start at age 18,” Safarik says. That would leave police poring over cold case files, many of them seemingly minor crimes, going back to early ’70s.

I believe it was the neighbors/writer who made that claim. Yes, Williams was in Dubai at Camp Mirage. There were a number of "suicides" there, including a Canadian female military intelligence officer.

He has also travelled all over Canada. I think back to a recent news story about the FBI saying there is a link between serial murders in the U.S. and long-haul truckers. What about the randomness of a pilot crisscrossing the country, or many countries? He flew dignitaries, and dignitaries fly frequently to many destinations.

Have the OPP been to the house yet? The military were apparently guarding it. Ms. Harriman was reportedly taken away by the military. Aside from compassionate grounds, I have to wonder what kind of damage control is going on.

Very strange isn't it, that we have learned nothing about his family background? Given the number of reporters assigned to this case, I would have expected something to show up by now. All we know is that Williams is married and has no children.

Speaking of prostitutes, there are a number of unsolved murders in Ottawa, and dozens -- possibly hundreds -- of unsolved cases of murdered sex trade workers/"at risk" people across the country. There are many missing women, too, in places like Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Vancouver. Let's not forget Nova Scotia. I'm really curious to know if anyone has done geographic profiling in this country that has found a link to Canadian Forces bases. I'm not saying that the accused is responsible for this. I do wonder if there is a geographic connection to bases in some cases, since the police have repeatedly stated that this particular case was about geography.

The nature of the September attacks, as revealed in articles today, gives the impression of an attacker with a certain air of invincibility.

Not until March, though. Harper prorogued parliament to avoid the afghan detainee issue...imo...;)
