Human Behaviour
Outside the Belleville court house this morning before the third grueling day of the sentencing hearing of Colonel Russell Williams, the disgraced former commander of Canada's largest air force base, a strange impromptu display has formed.
Two yellow roses, presumably one for each of Williams' murder victims, have been placed on the Hastings County Court House sign.
More unusually, a textbook, titled "Understanding Human Behavior", has been placed by the long set of concrete steps leading to the court's front doors.
It seems an apt metaphor for the proceedings this morning as we expect to see the video interview Williams gave to police after he became a suspect -- although the 18 hours has been edited down to 2 hours and 40 minutes.
Readers will recall Williams was seen as above suspicion early in investigations of his serial crimes because of his position and reputation. An elite pilot who flew the Queen, the Prime Minister and other dignitaries on their travels, Williams had 3,000 men and women under his command at CFB Trenton.
The video is highly anticipated because it will mark the public's first substantive opportunity to witness Williams interaction with authorities. It might make fascinating viewing, watching a process during which a respected, decorated, intensely confident military man walked in and a disgraced, humiliated, degenerate walked out.
In the interviews he admitted to killing Marie-France Comeau and Jessica Lloyd, sexually assaulting two others, and more than 80 sex fetish burglaries.
In the afternoon, victim impact statements will be heard. More than a dozen are expected, primarily from members of Ms. Lloyd's family.
As I noted in my story in today's National Post, just before he is sentenced -- likely tomorrow -- Williams will be given an opportunity to address the court and the big question now is what he might say.
Court convenes this morning at 9:30 a.m.
