The court has released the letters Col. Williams wrote to his victims and his wife while he waited in the interview room. Here is one he wrote for his wife:

"Dearest Mary Elizabeth,

I love you, Sweet (illegible). I am so very sorry for having hurt you like this. I know you'll take good care of sweet Rosie (their cat.)

I love you,

She begins with, 'I've tried to start this victim impact statement many times over the year, but never knew what to say ... I couldn't help but feel a sense of violation and mistrust of those around me.' Wondering about what kind of person could do something like this she told herself, 'He had to be emotionally disturbed.' The effects of this on her became apparent later, as her father and her took precautions around the house like putting bars on the windows and installing a security system. 'I was very afraid to live on my own in a new city,' she says of a move to different city. She says she has had many issues including panic attacks and withdrawing from social settings and events. She has been seeing a psychologist on regular occasions and was prescribed anti-anxiety medication. She feels anger and fear just reviewing this statement. She has her life has been impacted 'very negatively' as a result of Williams' crimes against her."

Because of Williams' 'horrible and cowardly acts' these friends will not view the world in the same way as before. 'Because of Russell Williams I will never see Jessica again, who I loved like a sister,' she says on behalf of someone. Speaking for herself she says, 'I despise Russell Williams ... I am so angry that that man felt he had the right to take away someone I loved ... His selfishness has changed who I am ... I resent that he doesn't even have the courage to look at me,' she says. Sometime back after RW was arrested and it was noticed that his wife kept her maiden name, I searched the history of that name + Canada. One family of immigrants came to CA in mid-1800's - so I figured that was MEH's family and stopped looking further. Then later I learned that one descendant of the US line did invest in the Winnipeg and Pacific RR, and I think MEH was born in Winnipeg. There may, or may not be a connection. I just don't know, but I do know that the surname could be used by leaving the implication that she was one of 'them'.

As I understand it, after her baby brother died in infancy she was an only child. I think that her parents are deceased, so who is "her family" to whom RW refers and is concerned about?

Emotional and confrontational statements from friends and family of Williams' victims address the court.

One said she bet that Williams "doesn't have the courage to look at me."

As she pauses all eyes turn to look at Williams. He slowly tilts his head to look sideways at her.

Spectators gasp.

"I hate him" she said.

The next woman, a lifelong friend of Jessica Lloyd, took up the theme: "I feel Russell should give us the common decency to raise his head."

Again, Williams does.

Slightly at first he lifts his head, with his hair cropped to a military bristle, then he sat nearly erect, looking the victims in the eye.

"The very person whose job it was to protect my country and keep us safe was terrorizing my community," she said.

"Russell Williams murdered my best friend...Jessica was the love of my life...we met when we were 10 years old...every weekend we had sleepovers, We would stay up, lie in bed and listen to the Oldies station....I said I would never let anyone hurt her, I failed..."

As she speaks, her voice cracking, the colonel gazes at her from the prisoner's box.

"On January 29, (the day Jessica vanished) my world fell apart...the helplessness I felt was unforgettable...I prayed that the police knew more than they were telling us...I have lost my best friend forever...Russell Williams stole her from me. He was above the law until he crossed her path...I suffer from survivor's guilt...My heart is different. I am not happy any moe. I am now filled with hate and anger..I spend my days wondering when I am going to wake up from this nightmare...I often don't want to partake in life...I think about my own death often, and I am no longer scared...I live in a state of hate and helplessness. I hate Russell Williams with all that I have and I have learned to hate those who were close to him...I guess my wounds will bleed to the day I die...The last moments of Jessica;s life are public knowledge and she would never have wanted that. I get through my days knowing that Jess is in peace..."
