GUILTY Canada - Melinda Vasilije, 22, stabbed to death 47 times, Kitchener, 28 April 2017 *Arrest*

Looks like he was on his way to Mexico:

Ager Hasan, 24, charged with the murder of Melinda Vasilije, 22, was arrested Tuesday during an unrelated traffic stop in San Antonio while crossing the United States in what police say was an attempt to reach the Mexican border.

Was he walking? LOL It's only a 16hr drive from Nashville, through Arkansas and Texas to the Mexican border. He was in Nashville almost 2 months ago. And it's only a 26hr drive right from PA where he stole the first licence plate the day after the murder. That was 21/2 months ago. Can't wait to hear where he's been spending his time. I still think he was receiving help in TN. I hope they have a lot of info from his car and whatever possessions he had with him...like a new cell phone.

A suspect in the murder of a Kitchener woman has been arrested after spending months on the lam in the United States.

Waterloo Regional Police say Ager Hasan was arrested Tuesday in San Antonio, Texas, at a traffic stop conducted by the United States Secret Service.

The traffic stop was part of an “ongoing counterfeit currency investigation,” Insp. Mike Haffner told reporters. According to the Secret Service, Hasan had bought counterfeit money over the dark web.

Who would think of doing this and how long ago did he start purchasing this counterfeit money? :notgood:

I wonder if the person he purchased this money from, or at least the most recent purchase, was an undercover agent? :D

How much is counterfeit money?! [emoji848] how does that work. Lol

And did he use counterfeit money to buy more counterfeit money? :p

Looks like he was using TOR to access the dark web though. Which explains why he wasn't concerned about posting on the internet during his flight from justice and why it was so difficult to track him that way. I wonder whether he had been poking around the dark and/or deep web prior to fleeing and for what reason? Not sure someone without any previous knowledge of it would just randomly figure out why and how to go there within a week of running from LE. Plus he probably had and used Bitcoin for the purchase. Now did he have all that set up before he fled or did someone help him on the run?

Arrested by Secret Service?!
https://www.therecord.com/news-stor...an-was-arrested-in-texas-during-traffic-stop/
WATERLOO REGION — Murder suspect Ager Mohsin Hasan was arrested in San Antonio, Texas, on Tuesday afternoon by the United States Secret Service during a traffic stop.

"This traffic stop was conducted by the U.S. Secret Service in relation to an ongoing counterfeit currency investigation," Insp. Mike Haffner of Waterloo Regional Police said at a media conference Wednesday at police headquarters.

Yes...the Secret Service in the US deals with counterfeit money investigations. My guess is that he purchased counterfeit money on the dark web from an undercover agent. Probably had it mailed to a PO Box. Or he purchased it and used it in a counterfeit sting. Once he used the money, the Secret Service had his info and pulled him over. Then they ran the plates and realized they were stolen and the vehicle make and model were on a BOLO.

Extraditing Ager Hasan from the U.S. could take a week, or a month
The process could drag on if Hasan fights extradition from the U.S.

Det. Jesse Kingscote, with WRPS, told CBC News it could take as little as a week to get Hasan through the extradition process — if things go smoothly.

If Hasan fights extradition from Texas, it could take up to a month before he's back in Canada.

[...]

Hasan appeared in Texas court on Wednesday "and he will be held in custody until the determination is made for the extradition hearing," said Haffner.

Once that happens local officers will go down to San Antonio and escort Hasan back over the Canada-U.S. border, said Haffner.

So...bets on whether he will fight extradition? I say no. :D

People online has picked up the story and they indicate an extradition hearing in the US has been set for Sept 11th. So if he chooses to fight it, he will stay in custody in Texas at least until that hearing date. Again, my bets are that he won't fight it.

An extradition hearing to return Hasan to Canada is scheduled for Sept. 11. It was not immediately clear if he has retained an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

How it went down...

Haffner says that Hasan alleged he only had a couple of hundred dollars and a passport when he crossed over the border.

U.S. Secret Service agent Paul Duran tells PEOPLE the federal agency got involved in the case after they received an anonymous tip on Tuesday that someone was receiving or in possession of counterfeit currency.

Duran says that at the time, they had no idea it was Hasan.

“We took the information and were able to identify a vehicle the subject was using and found that it had stolen license plates out of Arkansas,” he says.

Agents set up surveillance outside of a San Antonio apartment complex and observed Hasan’s vehicle drive by, Duran says.

“He was still unknown to us at the time,” he says. “We arranged for the San Antonio Police Department to pull [the vehicle] over for a traffic stop.”

Hasan was in the car with a man, whom authorities believe is unconnected to the counterfeit scheme, Duran says. It was at that point that they realized there was a warrant out for Hasan’s arrest in Canada.

Duran says Hasan was allegedly found with seven counterfeit $20 bills.

“The indication is he was ordering the counterfeit bills on the Dark Web Internet,” he says. “We believe he was purchasing them online and having them shipped to him.”

So who was in the car with him?

Pretty scary to think our local LE wasn't really close to arresting him. What are the chances he bought money and secret service was on it. Amazing!

I guess we can thank the anonymous tipster? I wonder if that is the same person as the man in the car with him? :dunno:

CBC News has learned that extraditing Ager Hasan from the U.S. may take longer than initially thought.

Earlier this week, Waterloo Regional Police told reporters they believed it could be as little as a week and as long as a month before Hasan, 24, is returned to Canada to face his second-degree murder charge.

But court officials in Texas confirmed to CBC Kitchener-Waterloo that Hasan has been appointed a public defender and his next court date in Texas will be September 11th, 2017. Hasan was arrested in San Antonio, Texas, on July 11

Hasan was arrested in San Antonio, Texas, on July 11 by the U.S. Secret Service at a traffic stop in what Waterloo Region police described as an ongoing counterfeit money investigation.

On Wednesday Waterloo Regional Police Insp. Michael Haffner told reporters local police don't believe the U.S. Secret Service would be proceeding with charges against Hasan for any involvement in that operation.

What is the point of fighting extradition? Is there any possibility that the courts will say ok "you stay here" does this happen? Or is it's just merely a stall tactic. And won't this look worse in Ajer of he fights it?
Thanks friends

Well any time he spends in custody prior to trial is deducted from his overall sentence. Even though defence attorneys are jumping on the new SC rules about timely trials, in some cases, they (or their client) deliberately delay trials for more time in pre trial custody to be credited towards final sentences. And time in jail before a trial is a lot different than time in prison after a conviction with regards to a person's rights and what they can expect in terms of privileges. A person is always presumed innocent during pre trial custody.

An extradition hearing will just prolong his time in San Antonio because he WILL be extradited as a result of the hearing if he chooses to wait for it. After all his online confessions and blame throwing at the victim, it will be pretty hard for him to suggest that the information Canadian officials will provide about the crime is inaccurate. Maybe he likes it in the SA jail and he thinks it will be better than whatever jail awaits him in Canada? I doubt it though. My guess is that he'll want to return to Canada ASAP, close to home, where his family and friends can call him, visit him and bring him stuff.

LOL...probably. Although at this time we are talking about jails or detention centers and not prisons. Come to think of it, how well do you think an immigrant from Iraq would do in a Texas jail? He's probably begging to come home. :giggle:

A new article. We need to imprint into people's brains that it's so dangerous when a relationship ends.

The article speaks on the domestic that happened a few weeks prior. A friend of mine( I mentor her as a young single mom) it was her first apartment. She is the one who called the police. She was so scared to get involved but now she is relieved that she did.

Lots of good info in that article. So he was living at an address in San Antonio where he was accessing the internet and ordering counterfeit money. He was in the passenger seat of his vehicle with someone else (a man according to earlier reports) driving when they were pulled over. He emailed and contacted LE in Kitchener via What'sApp because he wanted a plea deal but did not get the promise of one so he continued to run.

He didn't want to be arrested by US authorities, which is likely why he had some other poor sucker driving him around in his BOLO car with the stolen plates. I guess he figured if they got pulled over he'd have time to extract himself from the situation while LE were dealing with the driver? Doesn't say that he was carrying fake ID although that's another thing I'd expect him to be doing or just carrying no ID at all. Very curious as to who the person he was with is and whether it was his apartment that AH was living in. Also like to know how he made that connection and when. It would make more sense to me if it was a woman and he had "picked her up" in a bar or something and had managed to get himself an invite to move in.

Still waiting to hear where he was, what he was doing and who was helping him prior to May 20th when he was spotted in TN.

So was your friend a neighbour to the apartment where Melinda was living Dyanna? And she heard the altercation on April 3rd and called police? Good for her if that's the case. So often people don't want to get involved.
