Just as a personal experience, my brother disappeared many years ago, when he was about 18 (I was much younger). In that case, he took most of his stuff with him, leaving behind just some bulky sports equipment in his rental, so everybody in my family just assumed (correctly) that he did it to get away from the family. There had been a lot of pressure on him to conform in terms of job/school and he was openly disgruntled about that, so it made sense he might just decide to leave. My parents didn't even report him missing to police - but people didn't do it so much in those days. The reaction from everyone in that older generation was to get even more mad at him for upsetting his parents.
I think in cases where a person disappears without any of their belongings, and there's been no situation where someone really might want to get away from other's interference, it's a big red flag that it's not voluntary/fresh start.
And we're not even sure of that big red flag here, as all we know is that she left her car and cell phone at home---both items that could have assisted in locating her. We don't know if she took a laptop, a suitcase, clothes, etc., because at the time of the press conference, they informed the media that they had not done an inventory of the house.
