Canada- Sharif Rahman, owner of Curry House restaurant, assaulted by 3 men, suffered brain injury then died, Owen Sound, ON, 17 Aug. '23 *Arrests*

  • #261
Owen Sound is on traditional territory, but is not part of a First Nations Band territory, so the tribal police wouldn't be involved.

I have no link to support this, so please consider it gossip, but according to some within the legal community in that region, an update from police is expected shortly.

My suspicion is that there may be an international element to the arrests that is complicating the matter.
The reason I suspect there may be an international element, is because police can detain a foreign national without charges. At least, I believe so. But I am not a lawyer.
Thanks, Musical, for the update. I theorized in a previous post that one or more of the suspects could be an international worker on a visa:
1. Possibility that the culprits could be international workers on travel visas. If you've ever vacationed in Canadian tourist areas, you will hear a lot of British and Australian accents. These are the thousands of mostly young people from the Anglosphere who travel to Canada on short-term visas to work hotels, summer camps, restaurants and and ski hills. Owen Sound is in close proximity to the Bruce Peninsula and Blue Mountain tourist regions, both of which likely have a large number of young people on travel visas.

to me it's somewhat at odds for Canadian men who look kinda square and conformist, to choose to eat curry. Maybe a UK connection?

''Police say two of the men are from the United Kingdom and are currently before the courts in relation to extradition.

“The are no timelines available for the extradition of the accused individuals,” police stated in a release.

"We are pleased to provide some long-awaited insight into the investigation and the court process in order for our community to continue to heal," said Owen Sound Police Chief Craig Ambrose.

"This complex investigation was successfully resolved thanks to the dedicated coordination and hard work of multiple police services and partners. This case underscores the critical importance of strong relationships among local and international law enforcement agencies," stated OPP Deputy Commissioner Marty Kearns.''

Great to see justice for Sharif and the Rahman family.

The suspects were international, as many on WS speculated. Your source came through @musicaljoke.

Interested to know what they were all doing in Canada. Evans is a Welsh name but they were found in Scotland?

I agree about the outfits: it's as though the only choice they had was the colour of their brightly coloured t-shirts.

Also, to me it's somewhat at odds for Canadian men who look kinda square and conformist, to choose to eat curry. Maybe a UK connection?

Well done, @Cedars. You're absolutely right. Indian restaurants are much more ingrained in UK culture than Canada, especially among middle-aged white guys. I noted previously that they didn't look the kind of guys who would visit an Indian restaurant.
If these suspects are from the area, then I don't think they are regulars at the Curry House. Based on their clothing, they seem like the kind of guys who would frequent a local sports bar or diner. If you're familiar with Canadian restaurants, think Boston Pizza or Kelsey's. In small town Ontario, an Indian restaurant is still seen as quite "exotic" in 2023.

The 2 older individuals may be brothers; the younger one may be the son of one of them. It would be interesting to know what they were doing in Canada

It seems like the OPP identified them fairly soon after the crime. The 3 left Canada quickly, so their absence or quick departure may have been noticed soon after the crime.

Visiting relatives? Tourists?

Probably explains their quick return to the UK.

Perhaps they were running out on the bill as a ‘lark” but Sharif was badly hurt, then died.

If they had return tickets, knew they were leaving? Stiff him for the meal. Common as muck criminals.

ETA. I think the manslaughter charge reflects my supposition.
