Canada- Sharif Rahman, owner of Curry House restaurant, assaulted by 3 men, suffered brain injury then died, Owen Sound, ON, 17 Aug. '23 *Arrests*

Visiting relatives? Tourists?

Probably explains their quick return to the UK.

Perhaps they were running out on the bill as a ‘lark” but Sharif was badly hurt, then died.

If they had return tickets, knew they were leaving? Stiff him for the meal. Common as muck criminals.

ETA. I think the manslaughter charge reflects my supposition.
The above article said they were on tourist visas. I'm surprised that Canada requires tourist visas from the UK as they are both in the Commonwealth.

It depends on the length of stay.

Yep, I believe UK tourists need a visa if staying more than 6 months. It’s possible they were seasonal workers who are employed in the region, which has a number of tourist-oriented businesses, like hotels and golf courses.

I'm so glad they have arrested the 3 individuals responsible. I wonder if the father and son were visiting the brother who is either a landed immigrant from the UK or in the process of becoming a Canadian citizen. I will be patient for the legal process to play out so these guys get a return visit to Canada on Ontario's dime. They can stay as long as we'd like them to. Hopefully, anywhere from 7 to life although I doubt a life sentence will occur. Just think of the ease these guys had slipping out of the country without being on any LE's radar. <Modsnip: No need to turn this into a racial issue>

I'd like to clear up a few misconceptions about Canada and Indian food. Canadians love Indian food. I think the love affair started during the 1970s when we received an influx of Indian immigrants from various places - Uganda (refugees), Tanzania (refugees) Pakistan (refugees) and India. I live in a town a little bigger than Owen Sound. Owen Sound has 4 Indian restaurants and so do we. There's whole areas in grocery stores devoted to Indian food. It's become as popular as Mexican and Chinese food.

Glad to finally have a real update and info. So manslaughter, typically not a long prison sentence in Canada - right?

Four years to life.

Interested to know what they were all doing in Canada. Evans is a Welsh name but they were found in Scotland?
Maybe they hoped to hide in the wilds of Scotland, up north out of sight? The way Americans used to escape to Canada.

On a more serious note, Welsh names are found in Scotland and England, Scottish names in England and Northern Ireland and undoubtedly in Wales etc. There is quite a bit of movement within the UK population. No real borders anymore, so not a huge surprise to find fugitive Evans in Scotland.

The haircuts, to start with. Shaved at the sides and back and then fuller at the top. Then the will to use deadly force in a flash to get away with not paying something as simple as a tab.

They were here on visitors visas so maybe they were doing work of some kind.

I have a poor impression of some of them and gypsies in general. I understand I have a bias, and the community is likely mostly good people. These men may not be part of them, it’s just an impression.

Do we know whether or not they are British citizens? Another possible reason for being in Canada on visitor's visas is that they may have been travelling under another passport.

That’s a great point.

ETA: I just checked. They’re described as UK citizens.

2nd edit: I’m not sure, but if they have a criminal record would they need a visa?

I think* that they wouldn't be allowed into Canada if they had a criminal record. But I could be wrong. Are we able to find out anything more about these three creatures?

If they were working in Canada for six months, then we should soon be hearing from Canadians who knew them as co workers.

Robert Evans 24, has been charged with manslaughter. Robert Busby Evans 47, and Barry Evans 54, have been charged with accessory after the fact. They are from the UK and fled to the UK.

interresting cause I think everyone thought it looked like two younger guys from the back (or at least I did)

their outfits are odd to me too - not typical
I wonder if they're travelers from another country

hey hey hey I was right too!

I hope there are some Ontario lawyers here that can explain some things for us. The arrests were made at the end of July and we have heard nothing about any charges having been laid. Don’t charges have to be laid within a certain time after the arrests or the arrested get released? If charges have been laid, do they not become public? Thanks for any enlightenment on this.

I guess the answer is that we sometimes just have to wait for the answer.

You’re right on that. IMO, this makes the OSPS and the OPP look really effective. Just a thought - maybe they could help out the TPS on the Sherman case.

Hehe! Yeah for sure. To be fair, OSPS had a few good hints. I suppose others in the restaurant might have overheard the three talking. They'd be exposed by their accents, I'm thinking. And there were witnesses. However, this is not to diminish the awesome work done by the police.

This case and the recent Idaho student murders are good examples of the police getting a good start on their investigation and quietly closing in on the suspects.

The Sherman case, not so much.

I think you're probably correct regarding their British accents. This would definitely stick out in a small Canadian city and would help them narrow down on suspects.
