Three men facing charges in the death of an Owen Sound, Ont., restaurant owner are fighting their extradition from Scotland with claims that Canadian jails are overcrowded and disease-ridden.

Sharif Rahman, 44, was attacked outside of The Curry House restaurant in downtown Owen Sound on Aug. 17, 2023, after confronting three men about an unpaid $150 bill. The 44-year-old husband and father of a young girl died a week later in a London, Ont., hospital.

Robert Evans, 24, faces a charge of manslaughter. His father, Robert Busby Evans, 47, and his uncle, Barry Evans, 54, are charged with being accessories after the fact. All three remain in custody pending extradition proceedings.

Yes, I think because uncle Barry arranged for the prime suspect to flee the scene, and his father arranged for him to immediately flee the country. They even tried to conceal that they'd stayed at a motel an hour away...shows consiousness of guilt, I'd say.

I don't think this was an easy case to crack. Police would have learned right away about their accents, but they chose not to release that...interesting.

I don't think you can identify a male Irish traveler by their clothing. Maybe the women since most overdress. I hate to say it but a lot of the negative stereotypes regarding Irish travelers are accurate when it comes to certain behaviors. They are known to dine and dash.

The clothing items were probably bought in Britain, that’s why they looked slightly different from North American clothing.

It was only shorts and tee shirts.

I remember being cautious about using the word 'travelers' but it was definitely what I was thinking
I didn't want to capitalize it as I wanted to tread lightly about their nationality

I agree about the outfits: it's as though the only choice they had was the colour of their brightly coloured t-shirts.

Also, to me it's somewhat at odds for Canadian men who look kinda square and conformist, to choose to eat curry. Maybe a UK connection?

I just listened to the podcast on this case by True Crime Garage. They pointed out that the bill was $40, which is a low amount for three men out eating. Which made me wonder if only one man ate at the restaurant, with the other two joining him later. One meal, plus drinks? Why isnt there any footage of the third man fleeing? Is it because he went a different way, to a different car? One he arrived in earlier? If there had only been one meal plus drinks, there is a very good chance everything on the table was cleared- it was closing time.
Were there other customers still in the restaurant? Any who could confirm what time(s) the men arrived?
Could the unusual clothes be to do with sport? 5 a side football, or something like that, with one having the different colour shirt for goalie?

Their matching shoes and shorts are odd to me. Black socks and shoes with shorts in August? And the third suspect is possibly 20 years older? Their father, maybe? Older co-worker?

Maybe they passed through from Toronto, but for guys possibly in their mid-20s or 30s, they don’t look like typical Torontonians to me. There’s something uncosmopolitan about their look, imo. I’d expect something more stylish or hip, or the complete opposite. These guys look clean cut and the shorts and shoes almost look like part of a uniform. Co-workers, maybe?

The victim was such a great man and it’s unspeakably tragic. I really want this solved, and I think it’s possible.

BBM What a silly claim. Probably no more overcrowded or disease-ridden than Scottish prisons.
Besides, good thing to consider before you commit a crime.

Fly-by-nighters. Good reason to use a reputable local company who invoices, instead of using this kind of shady company. If nobody made use of their services, they couldn't exist and certainly wouldn't go to a foreign country to drum up custom.

Maybe the UK needs to check their passport application services, tho of course criminal minds will find their way through...

At least the family of Sharif will receive some sense of justice and closure I suppose, although of course that will never bring back a husband for a wife bereaved so early or a father for a child orphaned at such a young age.

Hope that these men, if convicted, are sent back to the UK after the prison sentence, and are barred from ever entering Canada again.
