Yes, it's just ridiculous. Death was maybe not the intent, but rather to prevent being chased and caught. But hey, criminals, just don't steal! Pay what you owe for services, don't harm anybody, and the world would be fine.

This. As far as I understand it. The passports were issued under false names. I presume the UK Passport Authority didn't know this, so it would be a valid passport. There would be no indication in the departure airport in the UK (Manchester or London presumably) that there was a problem and no indication for the Canadian Border when the perps landed in Canada.

UK Passport Authority (or whatever it's called) needs to look into how UK passports can be issued under false names - what went wrong there? Close that hole. MOO. Too late for Sharif, RIP.

Could be based on the stolen identities of people who have died, or people who sell their own expired passports for big bucks, and the forger applies to renew the passports with different photos.

The validity of a passport is about the length of the time a passport can be used as a travel document, for example for five or ten years from the date it was issued. Some countries, among them Canada, requires that a passport has to be valid for at least six months or more on the date of arrival. So, if you travel to Canada today, 13 December 2025, the expiration date of your passport has to be after 13 June 2026, if you want to be allowed to enter Canada.

The passport also has to be undamaged, no loose or missing pages, no tears, no water damage, and the chip must be functional.

A passport is valid if the information above is fulfilled, it has nothing to do with if the identity of the person using it is correct or not.

I could be wrong, but I’m imagining a passport that’s properly issued by the government, obtained with false information. Let’s say John Smith fills it out with all his details and Rob Jones’ photo attached. If the government approves and issues it, Rob Jones will be able to travel as John Smith and routine airport security/customs would be unlikely to catch it.

He participated in covering up a murder after a dine and dash. He wants to share a prison cell with his son, and to make phone calls to friends and family in the UK. It sounds like he doesn't take the situation seriously.

If they are in a cell together, they'll be hatching plans to scam other prisoners. I think they should be separated pre-trial, and all phone calls recorded. After sentencing, they should be in separate institutions.

The passports are legal and were issued by the UK passport office. They were not altered after they were issued. The suspects submitted false identification to obtain the passports. The legal passports were obtained fraudulently.

The suspects were reported to the Better Business Bureau as aggressive and temperamental in June 2023, two months before the murder. It sounds like they lie, cheat, and steal their way through life.

"A representative from a company called Total Paving came to the door with a story about a lost contract and would we like to take advantage of the load of asphalt for a great deal, no money or deposit needed until the job was done. Extremely aggressive individual called Bob *****, thick Irish accent, insisted they had to start immediately. No company logo on their vehicle. Their email address took me to a website in Illinois called Total Paving. When questioned he said they had an office in Collingwood Ontario but there is no Total Paving Co in Collingwood. There was no phone number for head office on Jane St in Toronto and he could not give me that phone number. He kept redirecting me to Dave, his supposed boss in Collingwood. I talked to Dave and he gave me no clear answer to my questions or a phone number for head office. Bob became physical and started poking me saying I had to be more trusting. He continued to insist on starting the job. He would not even give us 10 minutes to talk to my husband in private about the job. He said “ok I’m just going to do the job” I firmly said no you’re not. He took back his business card with the bogus email address and his boss’s phone number on it. Their logo on the card was Total Paving with a tractor. The card had a head office address on Jane St Toronto with no contact information except a phone number to call Dave. He was clearly angry when he left."

I'm glad to see that he was asked if he needed medical attention and that he said no. His excuse for fighting extradition was that Canadian prisons, according to him, didn't have suitable health care. So next week, when his cold makes him quite ill, he won't be able to blame it on Canada's failure to provide medical care.

That's a strange argument to make ... about Canada not having suitable health care!

Prisoners who need health care may receive it faster than others simply because they cannot be left in a waiting room or hallway.
