The Banner prepared a timeline of the investigation in hopes of helping jog someone's memory.

• Varaschin was last seen alive, visiting her parents’ home near Bolton, on Sunday, Aug. 29.

• Her white Toyota Corolla was found abandoned in an alley behind a Broadway business at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 30. Its front doors and trunk were open, with blood smears visible on the rear bumper.

• Police went to the woman’s Spring Street home to investigate, where they discovered more blood. She was nowhere to be found.

• That afternoon, Varaschin’s family reported her missing, officially launching the search to find her.

• Police formally identified Varaschin as the missing woman, releasing her description in hopes the public could help find her.

• On Wednesday, Sept. 1 police concede Varaschin likely met with foul play. They released security camera footage recorded early on Aug. 30 of a minivan in the area where Varaschin’s car was found, asking for the driver to come forward. Within a couple hours, he spoke with investigators but was unable to help determine when the Toyota was abandoned.

• During a Friday, Sept. 3 news conference, lead investigator Det. Insp. Mark Pritchard asked the public to help find blood-stained beige- or cream-coloured bed coverings taken from Varaschin’s home.

• Shortly before 9 a.m., on Sunday, Sept. 5, a walker in a wooded area off Beech Grove Sideroad discovered human remains. Later in the day, a coroner confirmed the remains are human.

• The search of Varaschin officially became a murder investigation on Tuesday, Sept. 7, after an autopsy confirmed the remains are hers.

• Police ask anyone who saw Varaschin's car during the overnight or early morning hours between Sunday, Aug. 29 and Monday, Aug. 30, before 10 a.m. to call the tip line. They believe the killer drove from her house to Beech Grove Sideroad to dispose of the body.

• Pritchard announced during a Wednesday, Sept. 8 news conference the bed coverings had been recovered, but didn’t mention where.

• During the news conference, Pritchard said Varaschin’s killer was likely wearing men’s size 10 or 11 Dakota or Wind River boots. He once again called on the public for assistance, asking residents to report anyone with stained boots that match that description, who just disposed of their boots or does so following the police announcement.

If anything or anyone suspicious comes to mind, contact the dedicated tip line at 519-941-2522, ext. 2211. Anonymous calls can be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. A $2,000 reward has been offering for tips leading to a conviction.

Hi everyone. I've been a long time lurker here but finally had to register since this case happened in my town, about 5 minutes from where I live. We are so hoping that an arrest will be made very soon; this murder is all anyone is talking about.

This morning my friend was going to garage sales a few streets over from me and told me that she saw 2 police officers talking to a lady in a park. They were looking into the garbage can that was about 20 feet away from the road. I drove over there a few hours later to see if anything was going on, but didnt see any police around, but the garbage can is not there any longer. Hope this means they found something, perhaps his bloody clothes he had on the night of the murder.

Hi all, I am shocked and saddened to hear about Sonia's tragic murder.

I know some folks from Orangeville, and apparently there's a rumour going around that the perp already killed himself - specifically because a guy committed suicide in a motel over the same night she went missing. If that were true, I can't believe that LE wouldn't have gathered and compared evidence from both crime scenes.

Can anyone comment on this rumour?

Lady Alex, I can address that rumour. Apparently someone (a teenage boy) did commit suicide in a motel on Broadway Ave. the Friday following the murder. Everyone was talking about it, thinking it was the killer. Our local paper specifically addressed that rumour a few days ago, and said that the person who killed himself was not related to the murder in any way.

I don't think that they would put the effort that they have put in to this case if the murderer was already dead. He's still out there somewhere, hopefully he is really sweating bullets by now, counting down his last few days/weeks of freedom (we can hope).

Would the town not have emptied the garbage can since the murder. Unless someone suddenly decided to throw away their boots this week.

Jasmine's fur gets on everything, I bet. :cat:

I wonder if Sonia ever had to have anyone feed Jasmine when she was going to be away for a few days or longer. Maybe left her key with someone other than family?

If Orangeville is more on the ball than my town, perhaps. But the last time I was in the park, the garbage I had tossed in 3 weeks earlier was still in the bin. Hard time thinking that they didn't think to check them all though, considering what has gone on recently.....Keeping my fingers crossed that they get the break they need to get it done.

I always figured that Sonia just forgot to lock her door that night. Maybe she left her door open a lot as I have been known to do, feeling that the area is safe. I only saw one picture of the back of her house, and it looks like it is a sliding door. It was really hot the day before she was killed; maybe she had the door open all day and simply forgot to lock it before she went to bed.

That's a very good point. I think we can assume by the blood on the front steps that the perpetrator exited that way but LE may have found the back patio door unlocked, maybe just the screen door closed and not locked, when they went to the house and that's why they answered the question regarding entry in such an odd way by saying "you're assuming the door was locked".

Did she have air conditioning? We only have it in part of the house...the bedrooms do not have it. My oldest daughter and I both have major issues with heat intolerance. We have to have the windows open at night unfortunately.

I wonder if she had the door open, with the screen shut...during the night because it was hot...if she didn't have air conditioning or if it wasn't working?

On one newsreel it shows a window open over the garage door. So she may have left the door at the back open for a cross breeze to get in. You would have thought that more neighbours would have heard her scream but now it makes sense that with the heat, many people would have had air conditioning or fans going. The perp still would have had to have known she was alone I would think.

This guy was probably watching her and was familiar with her habits. There is a big open area and ravine behind her house so I'm sure he could watch her without being seen back there. He probably watched her turn her light off and then snuck into the house later. That poor girl; I can't imagine her terror.

Nurse's kin struggle with horror

"Time helps all situations, but this is a traumatic event in this community," Maycock said, adding the condominium corporation where Sonia lived has hired security staff to ward off "curious people".

He urged everyone to look for clues plus behaviour changes in a man who police said wore size 10-11 workboots.

Investigators want the public to recall if a co-worker talked more -- or less -- last week, if he spoke recently of a woman no longer mentioned, or came home with bloody clothes and boots, now discarded.

OPP Const. Peter Leon said police have had tips since revealing the big-boot clues but are withholding what caused Varaschin's death.

Also last night on global news, Mrs. Varaschin stated that she felt Sonia may have opened her sliding patio door and then the phone rang and she never went back to close it? I am not sure if either of these are fact or fiction. I would be interested in what you think.

Seems to me that if this was true, it would point to a random crime of opportunity, rather than someone who knew Sonia and planned this. Because it would be an extreme coincidence that the one day Sonia happened to accidentally leave a door open, would be the very night that someone planning to hurt her actually came to carry it out. But then again, coincidences can happen...so....possible?

The reason I think it was a stranger (or at least someone who snuck into the house, could have been an acquaintance) is because of the scream. I heard that there was only 1 scream heard, which could have been when he surprised her in her bedroom, if that is what and where it happened.

My theory is that it is someone who lives close by who could spend the time scoping out her house. He probably walked over, saw his opportunity and got in the house. After he killed her, he took her away in her car, dropped off the body, and then returned the car to where it was found. Thats the only reason I can see him bringing her car back to the neighbourhood. Maybe he had to get back in time for work/wife/mother waking up. He certainly couldn't be late or miss work on that particular day.

Do you know anything about fencing in the back of her property missbrooks? I have seen many townhouse units that don't have full fencing in the yards, just a privacy fence up near the house and the rest of the yard is open to all the other yards. Since there is usually no access to the backyard via a gate at the side of a townhouse, unless it is an end unit, I wonder what kind of fencing separated her home from the ones on either side and from the ravine in the back. Would it have been easy to climb without being noticed like a short wire fence or is it a 6ft wood type fence? Is there easy access to the ravine from another street or the same street?

Seems like a pretty risky thing to do, especially considering it was a clear night and the moon was almost full according to the weather sites. If any of the neighbours had heard anything and looked out their windows, they would have had a better chance at seeing someone back there with the moonlight.
