Two Edmonton police officers have been killed while responding to a call, the city’s force says.

''No details were immediately available but local media reports said the incident had taken place in the Inglewood neighbourhood early Thursday morning.

“The Edmonton Police Service is mourning the loss of two of its patrol officers who were killed in the Line of Duty, while responding to a call earlier today,” the Edmonton Police Service said in a statement.

Chief Dale McFee and others were expected to address media at 10 a.m. local time.

“No words can describe what our members and their families are feeling at this moment,” tweeted Staff Sgt. Michael Elliott, the former president of the Edmonton Police Association. “Our entire service and community are mourning and I’m devastated.”

''Two Edmonton police were killed while responding to a domestic call in the city's northwest Thursday morning.
CBC News has confirmed the officers were shot while responding to a domestic call, and that a third person is dead.
Edmonton police say the officers were killed early Thursday.''

''Much of the police presence is concentrated around the Baywood Park Apartments at 114th Avenue and 132nd Street, where several streets remained blocked to public access.''

''The two officers didn’t have an opportunity to use their own weapons in the incident that took place shortly after midnight, and while their colleagues rushed them to hospital — and tried “valiantly” to save them on the way, McFee says — they were declared dead at the hospital.

“I can’t tell you how devastated we are by their loss,” a somber-looking McFee said, standing at a podium at police headquarters in downtown Edmonton.

The officers were idenitified as constables Travis Jordan, 35 and Brett Ryan, 30.

Ryan had five and a half years of service, while Jordan had been serving for eight and a half years.

The suspect in the shooting died from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

A female from the suite where the incident happened was taken to hospital and is in stable condition.''

''One of the police officers killed in Edmonton was about to be a father for the first time and the other was called a “snow angel” for going beyond the call of duty to help people.

Const. Brett Ryan, 30, and Const. Travis Jordan, 35, were fatally shot responding to a domestic violence call early Thursday morning.

Ryan, who had been with the Edmonton force for 5 1/2 years, is being remembered as a pillar of the community and a longtime minor hockey referee.''

“I was alongside him growing up as he grew as an official and grew into a person and a husband,” Carter said.

Ryan, who lived in Spruce Grove just west of Edmonton, was always willing to give back, helping younger hockey officials develop their skills, Carter said. The officer was also active in the slow pitch community.''

“A 16-year-old wounded his mother with a firearm and then killed two police officers before taking his own life in western Canada early Thursday, officials told The Associated Press.”

Speculation had it that the same shooter was probably responsible for the Pizza Hut shooting as well and that now is confirmed. What a dreadful tragedy at the hands of someone so young.

“The 16-year-old boy who fatally shot two Edmonton police officers on Thursday is the same person who shot a Pizza Hut employee earlier this week, multiple sources have told CTV News Edmonton.

Const. Travis Jordan and Const. Brett Ryan were shot early Thursday morning when they responded to a domestic dispute call around 12:47 a.m. in the area of 114 Avenue and 132 Street.

The teen also shot his mother, who is in hospital, before he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said Thursday evening.

Multiple sources have now confirmed the boy is also responsible for a shooting early Sunday morning that left a 55-year-old man with life-threatening injuries.

A shooter walked into the Pizza Hut at 114 Avenue and 132 Street around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, and shot the employee……”

How did this 16-year-old come to be known by police for something "non-criminal"? I 'd be curious to know if he was one of the boys involved in this 2021 attack on a student at Roslyn School.

These four boys did not face criminal charges as a consequence of their actions. Instead, they entered a restorative justice program called EPS DiversionFirst.

I can't imagine how a youth would go from zero to shooting and killing police officers without showing some signs of trouble first. It would be interesting to know if he was one of these boys, or otherwise part of this police program.

Police have not officially confirmed that the Pizza Hut shooter is the person responsible for shooting his mother and killing the two police officers. However, it's likely the news sources are well-placed. They would not want to get this wrong. The clothes in the video might have been found in his apartment and the weapon might be the same. Ballistics reports will tell the story, if so

Police apparently weren't aware that a gun was involved when they responded to the call.

FWIW, the officers were taken to the nearest hospital in the inner city, the Royal Alex. Last month the hospital was on lockdown briefly due to a threat of gun violence.

Sources told Global that Brett Ryan's wife is a paramedic who was on duty at the Royal Alex when he was brought in. She is pregnant with their child.

The Global article states that Brett Ryan was a paramedic in Saddle Lake from 2012 to 2015, before he became an Edmonton police officer. Some significant events happened in nearby St. Paul during that period. I don't know if Brett Ryan was involved in the responses to those events, but it would not be unusual for small communities to call in help from nearby during mass casualty events.

So many questions. How did this 16 year old become so adept at shooting this gun and are we supposed to believe he had it in the apartment without his patents noticing so there was no opportunity to warn police he could be armed when the 911 call was made? Firing several rounds in succession, was it a semi-automatic possibly a banned weapon? How’d he get his hands on it, regardless at his age he certainly couldn’t have purchased it legally.

“It has since been confirmed that neither officer discharged their firearm, and it is apparent that they had no opportunity to respond to the threat that faced them," Laforce said at a news conference.

Jordan and Ryan were called to what police termed a family dispute at an apartment complex in the city's northwest. A 55-year-old woman, the teen's mother, met the officers outside. According to police, the boy's 73-year-old father was also in the home in a different room….”

“A 16-year-old boy who killed himself after fatally shooting two Edmonton Police Service constables had been involved in a previous mental health call but had no criminal record, police officials said Friday……”

It's hard to say what went on without hearing the 911 call, and knowing the nature of the previous "mental health" interactions at that address. The police chief has called it an "ambush". That's very specific, and leads to further questions about who was involved and "suicide by cop".

Police are also not saying anything about the firearm. We don't know if the firearm was legally purchased by one of the adults living in the apartment, or if it was a legal weapon. Both police officers were hit multiple times in short succession.

As reported yesterday by Global, unnamed sources have said the youth is responsible for the Pizza Hut shooting earlier in the week. That weapon was reported as a "rifle".

''Blyan said the woman’s son seemed quiet and wouldn’t meet her eyes when she’d try and speak to him.

“It’s like I’m invisible,” she said. “I thought he didn’t like me.”

She described the son as being around six feet tall with medium-length brown hair.

The woman was “very nice,” said Blyan, adding that she was from Ukraine. The woman moved to Canada about 15 years ago and had lived in the building since about 2019, she said.''

''EDMONTON—The Star has identified the teenager who shot two Edmonton police officers as Roman Zoltan Shewchuk — a 16-year-old who a family friend says was “very troubled” and seemed to be struggling.

''The shooting last week claimed the lives of Edmonton constables Travis Jordan, 35, and Brett Ryan, 30.

Shewchuk’s mother, Katya Nod, 55, was also shot during the altercation. She was said to be in stable but serious condition, but no public update has been given since a police media conference Friday.''

Oddleifson, a policy researcher, characterized the interactions between the family and the health-care system as “constant.”

“She tried very hard to be a great mother to all three of her children, but it was certainly strained with her youngest,” he added.

Few details can be gleaned from Shewchuk’s online presence. He has a handful of Facebook friends with a profile suggesting that he enjoyed video games.

Other details about the family situation are sparse. Darlene Blyan, Nod’s neighbour, said she believed Nod came to Canada from Ukraine years ago, but Oddleifson said she had been living in Ukraine and moved to Canada more recently, after the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“Her family had been here prior, but, you know, she’s a single 55-year-old mother of three and she had been trying to convince her mom to leave Ukraine; her mom was staunchly staying. She wouldn’t leave the homeland,” he said.''
