If this is the conversation I'm thinking of, I thought Casey was incredulously repeating what she had just seen her mother say on TV... (to her mom): you "don't know what my involvement in this is??!!" I took it as she couldn't believe her mother would doubt her. Did you not take it that way?
Tracey, that is the way I took it, because of a similar conversation in the past with a person like Casey. Thank God there was no child involved at the time, though. My husband's psycho daughter stole a credit card from me. It wasn't hard for me to figure out. In fact I had her and a few of her friends join us for dinner after (I found out later) their little shopping spree. They sat right there and smiled in my face and thanked me for dinner. A few days later her father confronted her about the card and she said in her little girl voice "And you think I did that, Daddy?" When the charge slips were given to me they were signed in her own handwriting, no attempt even to disguise it.
So yes, I took it that way. Once you have had one of these people come into your life, you will understand.
