Deann, I am so sorry for your loss. So sad.

This article says it work whether the phones are on or off. I assume it wouldn't work once the batteries ran down. It's really kind of creepy when you think about it. It makes me want to hide my phone in the fridge!

Just don't put it in the freezer....one of the first places burglars look. After that they look under the mattress.

I for sure was not going to put my phone under my mattress if the FBI can listen!!

If my husband woke me up at 4AM and told me my baby was missing the last thing I'm going to think about is that my phone service has just been turned off. When you are in a panic, those things just don't register until later. Now if the service had been off for several days that would be different. We don't know that DB even knew at 4AM that the service had been cut off that afternoon. She could have found out when JI told her later that he had tried to call home.

But she herself in an interview said she "knew" because she had "tried." I sure would like to know what time that was.

But she may not have remembered that during the initial panic of finding out that BL was gone. DB may have remembered "the try" after 911 was called.

Oh, I realize that. I'm just wondering at what point did DB realize that the phones were out of service.

ETA- I guess what I'm getting at is we know so very little. I don't expect that to change, but I do wonder. Was there an attempt to call JI's work phone at 10:30pm. . .kind of a I'm going to bed. . .I thought you'd be home soon. . .where are you . . .call? Or. . .idk??

One of the phones (DB's) was broken, the speaker/mic wasn't functioning correctly. Her grandfather gave her one of his old phones the day before. The service to (presumably) DB's & JI's phone was restricted effective midday October 3. It is assumed, alluded to, rumored that DB was transferring numbers from her broken phone & JI's restricted phone to the phone her grandfather gave her and it is assumed, alluded to, rumored that she would then be moving her sim card over and using that phone.

Verizon phones don't have SIM cards. They are a CDMA network. I posted a link for this the other day.

How do Verizon customers go about changing from one phone to another? I have TMobile so we just take the sim out of one and put it in the other.

I'm surprised at how many people here didn't know that you can use any charged cell phone to call 911, regardless if it has service or is restricted. In fact, many women's shelters (places for battered women and their children) collect old cell phones for just this reason. The woman has access to dial 911 at no cost. If you have old cell phones you don't know what to do with, you can erase your personal info and donate them to a women's shelter. It's a good way to recycle them, keep them out of landfills and help someone else.

You call the customer service number and tell them you need to do an ESN change. They activate your new phone by assigning the phone's ESN to your number in their system.

Can someone refresh me on how we know for certain that the network is Verizon for all of the phones involved(ATLEAST Jeremy's, Deb's, and the new loaner from dad that had gotten reprogrammed with the contact list of the Deb broken phone).?? Tia?

ETA: Nevermind just strike my question.. I can't get on this merry-go-round again..

ITA, I have had a cell since the early '90's (remember the giant motorola flip phones) and I gave that and many since to the women's shelter here.

OT I never knew about donating cell phones, thanks I know where my next one is going :)

I've wondered since early on about the FBI's ability to turn on phones remotely for surveillence. I had read up on this when dealing with another case. I was also under the impression that they could turn on phones remotely in missing person's cases to ping them. As long as there is a battery in the phone with a charge, I was under the impression that they could do this.

That's why I've always considered the determination by LE searches that the phones must still be in the area, or at least they believed they were long after the 911 call was placed. If they were charged and working at 3:22am, I wonder if the FBI were able to get information that they were still in the area 1-2 days later. :waitasec:

From ZDNET.com:
The FBI appears to have begun using a novel form of electronic surveillance in criminal investigations: remotely activating a mobile phone's microphone and using it to eavesdrop on nearby conversations."

Since the FBI was called in to early in the case, I wonder if they turned on the missing phones microphones and listened? I love all this new technology.

We talked about this a little bit last night starting at the quote above. It is interesting that things like that can be done. The technology available today is just amazing. :seeya:

That brings about another First time.. If this becomes a fact.

First time or day the phone goes on "restricted" service
First Time JI works Late
First Time Neighbors husband is away
First Time Front Door Unlocked

OK if Im looking for my missing daughter and I notice the phones missing also...then after calling 911 on JI work phone....

I think I would call the missing phones maybe thinking they were somewhere in the home while waiting for LE to arrive...

If message said they were restricted for payment...and I could have them turned back on quickly...I would have done that and kept dialing the numbers until LE came....

This has been another thing that has bothered me about the phones...

If they didn't have the money to pay the bill in the first place, were would they get the money at 4:00 am to get them turned back on quickly?

Someone posted earlier that you can charge it to your credit card and also enter a future date for that charge....so it sounds like if this is true they could get the phones back to working.

Or geez even if I didnt have the funds...I'd try telling the truth my daughter is missing... the phones are missing and you think the person that took your daughter has the phones so please please give me a 24 hours grace period.

But doing nothing is what concerns me ( if true)... but who knows maybe they did call and did just that....and we aren't given that info.

Well you can be sure that LE got that service turned back on PDQ and called those phones. It's those pings, and if they got any, that I'm most curious about.
