It's still shocking, so many and so much life gone in an instant. In regards to the whole cheerleading thing, they weren't just cheerleaders, they were ELITE ATHLETES. I've seen competitive cheerleading competitions because that is big here too, the skill and guts it takes to do these tricks required now is mindblowing. And the squads are big. They practice 5 days a week, take gymnastic and dance classes, have jobs, go to school. They are NOT doing drugs, not possible. Look at these girls just 3 months ago winning the National Championship. Be patient in the first few secs.

omgsh this is so incredibly sad. i am so sorry to the girls friends and families!! I couldnt even imagine. :(

but im a little sad to see that some are talking about them drinking, doing drugs or whatever else. People make mistakes. You cant blame them completely for the accident. How many people pass cars on two lane highways...most of the time nothing happens. These girls were just unfortunate. They were 5 beautiful girls who lost their lives in a tragic accident & people talk about them drinking alcohol?? That is just amazing to me. Oh well, i guess everyone is entitled to look at situations the they want!

I'm sure her parents regret letting her drive illegally (that is, if they knew) and outside the scope of her driver's license. It appears that law exists for a reason and unfortunately this is why.

I'm sure her parents are grieving immensely and regret their decision very much.

at this rate my daughter won't learn to ride a bike until she is 18... and then she will be restricted to my driveway during daylight hours with my direct supervision.

Aw that does resemble kelsey :(

Yeah they were an amazing cheer team. I remember hearing about them at all my cheer competitons! They were really good.

I sort of agree even though this story is very sad and tragic. There was a carload of Hispanic teens in my town a few years back who were killed on their way to their jobs at Sonic. The old hag who caused the wreck took off and was never caught. I didn't see that story make national news.
That is really sad. :( I am always sad to see a young person die before they have a chance to live their life.

Fairport grad's family disputes license claim

They say Bailey successfully took driver's ed; DMV not notified, it says.

(June 30, 2007) — Bailey Goodman's family said she successfully completed a driver's education class last summer. But state Department of Motor Vehicles officials maintain they never were notified so restrictions were not lifted from her license.
Bailey, 17, was driving the SUV that veered into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer in Bloomfield on Tuesday night, killing her and four of her passengers, all 2007 graduates of Fairport High School. Ontario County sheriff's deputies continue to investigate the cause of the accident but say driver error may be to blame.

We had a similar restriction when my kids got their licenses.Probationary license rules about passengers and times that it was valid. but even then it was for 6 months only and by the time they were seniors they could have had a carload. That is pretty old to have a junior license isn't it?
But at the time, it was a new restrcition and I was about the only parent that enforced it. I was not popular either.
Even the police didn't enforce it the first 2 or 3 years.

ETA: ok just read the above link and it sounds like they just have all kinds of differnt rules.

I feel so sad for the families of these girls. We choose to not allow our 17 yr old to even get her restricted license. We lost a couple from her school the end of the school year last year.
Our child is not allowed to ride in a car with a teenage driver, in older cars or with anyone we don't know. Strict, yes.

Thats so good beyond belief...i mean crazy strict but its good in the long run! Ive lost 4 friends in 4 completely different car accidents in the past 2 years..so i know when i do become a parent i'll be extremely strict!

she was only 17.
Yes, I understand that, my kids graduated at 17.Here the kids would not be restricted at that age anymore.
The rules are just very differnt.

Right? I coached cheerleading squads for many years. You work with kids you get a drift of what is going on in their lives. As some mentioned many of us did the same exact things at that age only there was no myspace to blab about it on. God bless these girls and thie families. Newly graduated. Ready to take on the world. Yep, we thought we were invincible.

I just saw one of the girls on that friends site has her name as "Blackout Queen". It's all so heart wrenching.

Even thought she had taken driver's ed, and regardless of her license status, she should not have been driving an SUV full of excited friends at 10:00 at night.

SUV's are so easy to "overcorrect" with. They are big and powerful and kids think that they are able to do anything in them. IMHO, nobody should drive one who hasn't had a couple of years experience driving something else first.

Five girls in one vehicle is also just a really bad idea.

Tragic. I hope some others in their home town learn something from it.

oh goodness, that article made me cry!

Me too. And, I was touched by the words the girls said about the truck driver, how he is the forgotten victim, how he tried to help. My heart breaks for all these people.
