If someone is in a mental health crisis but has no violent history then their family would not usually be calling LE for help.
There's a first time for every situation.

Tranquilizer guns. Good idea. Something fast acting and non lethal.

I know there is training, but it's reliability out in there field is questionable.
Also, the distrust is because cops arrest people for drugs, drunk driving, domestic violence. And many of the people that they are in confrontations with have been arrested previously. So it would take a lot for them to trust cops.

I think that is kind of an unfair comparison. An agitated individual looks very differently at a small, kind woman who wearing a nurse's uniform, as opposed to how they might look at an individual in a cops' uniform. The aggression could be automatic when they see the cop, and not the same reaction towards the nurse.
No cop is going to try and use a taser on a volatile, confrontational suspect with a baseball bat.
Of course there is. But IN GENERAL, the people that cops are called in to control, are people that have a history of arrests.
Tranquilizer gun not Taser. But why not use a Taser if it takes the person down?
By the way LE only said he charged down the steps. No indication he had the bat raised to swing.

Because a taser doesn't always stop an attacker. If they managed to crack the cop in the head with a baseball bat then the attacker could potentially get the cops weapon too.
because tasers do not always work, in fact they fail quite regularly for a number of reasons. that is why they are not a legitimate defense to an imminent serious threat. suggesting that the police be armed with tranquilizers guns is ludicrous.
He had a bat and the officer was afraid and now two innocent people are dead. Just because you have a gun doesn't mean you have to use it. I can't believe anyone thinks this is okay.
I have heard that they don't always work but it seems rare. LE have them to use for a reason.
Do you have a source that states Quintonio has a history of arrests? If not, I'm not sure the relevance here.
This past March, Northern Illinois University cops charged LeGrier with “obstructing a peace officer,” according to the Northern Star student newspaper. No other details were immediately available.
No kidding. Look what can happen if you do.
I am 100% ok with police shooting people that run at them with bats. If that is what happened here I have absolutely no problem with it. As they have already acknowledged, it is an absolute shame that the woman was killed.

That seems to be the problem. People and LE are so set against non lethal options.
And we only have their word that QL ran at them.
