Christian school complains 8-year-old girl isn't girly enough

She was punished by being expelled from the school she loved and her friends were at. Now I understand being expelled for bringing alcohol to school, but this is ridiculous!

She was not expelled She was told she could not enroll next year. Not the same thing.

Again it is a private school. They can say who goes and who doesn't.

I don't see anything about her being gay. I think she should be able to be a tom boy.. I was one.. Still am at heart. But I do not see the two things colliding here.

The last sentence in the first paragraph of this letter says otherwise.

I've lost the original article I read on it. The whole context of the letter from the school was printed and included language on how her not following their dress code was "immoral behavior". Granted this issue was resolved by moving her to a public school, but their despicable attitude needed a light shined on it (attention) like cockroaches. It shouldn't be acceptable to have such ignorant beliefs in modern society.

I completely agree, ignorance and bigotry must always be addressed.

The child is not punished. I don't love uniforms but I do like dress codes. I think the whole thing is ridiculous frankly and not news..

In this case, the child's family was told she would not be welcome to come back if she didn't conform to their "standards" as to how she should act or appear. That's punishment for non-conformity. How do you think the child feels? Do you think she feels she's been punished?

They never implied that SK was sexually immoral or the like but then they go on to imply just that when they release a statement about how something SK somehow sends a message that corrupts the Christian education of the other children and is in conflict with the school upholding Christian standards.

Why'd they write the family this then?

If they had looked forward to working with her and her guardians, why did they send her family a letter saying they should consider getting her to another school?

Reading their letter it really sounds to me like her tomboyishness caused other kids to be confused about her gender which caused parents to flip out that a "lesbian" might use the same bathroom as their kids.

It is a private school. Conformity is part of sending your child there. That is not punishment.

The words "traditional values" was (and still is) used by religious political groups like the coalition for family values that push thier agenda of intolerance and bigotry. I have heard this garbage for years in Orlando when I was politically active in a justice coalition.

I think in the long run Sunny will be much happier out of that school.

As far as missing her friends ,it is hard on an 8 year old . However better to remove her now from toxic people and before they effect her self worth as a person.

The school isn't "pushing" anything at all. Go there or don't is the message I get from the school's letter. Imo, the only "agenda pushing" is bizarrely, from the family who has already decided not to enrol the child for the next year, but wants to make a point about the school's policies -- which, by the way, they have certainly been aware of since she's been in school there. They want to make the school (which they chose to send their grandchild to for years) seem bad because she can't be/do whatever there. If that was a concern of theirs, they shouldn't have sent her to a conservative christian private school which, as far as I can tell, hasn't been covert about its policies vis-a-vis non-hetero sexuality.

I doubt it. The media is trying to make it sound like it's all about outward apperance, like hair and clothes. But the school has released one or two statments saying, yeah...no...it's about a whole lot more than that. jmo

Seems like this girl will be much better off not at that school! I find it sad and a little offensive to actually live in a world were this issue even exists.

I hope this young girl can flourish and grow to be whoever or whatever she pleases and be around people who support her no matter her hair length, dress code or girlyness!

I am not religious or follow any faith other than my own need to be an open minded, non-judgmental, helpful and caring human being. If your a genuine, nice and good intentioned person I don't care if you wear a garbage bag and have pipe cleaners in your hair!

It almost sounds as if the grandparents are the ones denying everything. The first letter from the school sounded as if they knew what Sunnie's identity counseling was all about and that future education was going to be confusing at that particular school, yet the grandparents say she just likes wearing jeans and donated her hair. Her hair should have grown some from when she donated it though. I wonder if the grandparents originally took Sunnie for counseling on their own or if the school recommended it.

I think you misunderstood my post. I was talking about the coalition groups using the same language as this school. But yeah in a way they are pushing an agenda that is "Be straight or get out!".
I have a feeling this thread is going to push my buttons and I dont want a time out.I have been dealing with people like this my whole life and no child should have to.

Abbott says they never made any accusations of sexual immorality but these are the Bible passages that according to the principal Bowman are being violated by the direction this poor child is heading:

There is nothing wrong with being traditional. There is something wrong with being hateful. They are not that same thing. It's like saying all of one group are one way which is in fact bias. Traditional means a lot of different things. Lumping everyone together is no better that what you are saying you don't like.

This should not be news. This family decided they did not like the values of this school and took her out if school. That should be the end of the story.

The guy is a nut. There is no doubt. His fear of something he does not understand is showing.

But again people misinterpret the bible all the time. They try and use it like a weapon against people and that is not what God intended it for.

This is not about Christians. This is about one guy and his messed up ideas.
She left the school. Which is a good thing. There are all degrees of strictness and traditionalists and all degrees of crazy.

This was ridiculous IMO. But I stand by their right to run their private school as they wish.

She'll be happier being free to be who she is in the confines of the next school but will still have rules to conform to.

Actually, only the Leviticus is particularly clear (and some scholars question even that). It isn't entirely clear whether the Torah is talking about all same-sex behavior or just ritual sex with temple prostitutes (a common practice among the followers of Baal). In any event, women get a pass.

Paul's letter to the Romans talks about people committing acts against their own natures. He doesn't even have a concept of people for whom same-sex orientation is their nature, nor does he suggest what is to be done with us.

The Matthew quote is a reach, unless one understands it to condemn all people who do not choose to procreate, including Catholic priests and nuns!

There are all sorts of problems with the Corinthians passage. I can look for a cite if you like (I realize you didn't compile this list), but suffice it to say the sentence in question has been translated through several languages and it is not at all clear what "effeminate" is supposed to mean.

Only the Paul reference refers to females anyway, so I guess they get a pass everywhere but at school.

A verse or two before or after the Leviticus condemns those who cut their beards before entering the temple, another condemns the wearing of clothes made from two kinds of cloth.

If the school enforces such other proscriptions, then I might have more respect for the opinion of its principal.
