Someone inside the home shot her as she stood on the front porch after the cleaning crew mistakenly arrived at the wrong house.

The call initially came in as a home invasion, and police investigated it as such. Upon further investigation, however, Jurkash said the home invasion element was “not the case anymore.”

It appeared the woman was part of a cleaning crew who had arrived at the wrong address. Officers attempted life-saving measures when they arrived, but the woman was already dead.

These cases are infuriating. I hope she gets true justice. You can not just kill someone for being on your porch! Ask what they want. Or just call police if you're worried about it, and let them handle it!

I remember when my stepsister moved and I went to visit her and went to the wrong house by accident. I just can't imagine being shot dead for standing on the wrong porch.

This is so insanely awful, I’m struggling to find words. I hope the truth comes out - soon - and the murderer is held accountable. This poor woman, her loved ones. Thanks for sharing it here.

I was so angry when I heard it. It has been on our local news all day, as it happened very close to where I live.

It was first reported as a home invasion. Fortunately there were witnesses to what happened as the rest of the cleaning crew was on the porch with her when she was shot.

I hope the person who shot and killed her isn’t planning to use the Castle Doctrine as a defense.

On local social media some are defending the person who shot her saying he had the right to be fearful because a woman was on his porch at 7 am. Others are saying it was just an unfortunate accident.

Hoping she gets justice :(

people in this country have a terrifyingly exaggerrated sense of when "self defense" applies

I'm so confused at people saying he had a right to be fearful because someone was on his porch at 7am...was she trying to enter the house or simply on the porch?

Several weeks ago there was a package delivered to me that actually belonged to someone in a different building in my development. Different building number but the same apartment number, so I went over there and knocked so I could give it to them...would they have reason to be fearful because I was simply knocking on their door?

This whole thing seems insane to me and there HAS to be more to this story IMO

Local news reports that the person in the house called 911 first to report an home invasion and then shot her through the door while she was on the porch.

Details are still being released so hoping for an official update soon.

she was standing on the porch and since she was shot through the door, the door must have been either mostly or entirely shut.

i'm having a hard time fitting anything a normal adult would call a "home invasion" to that fact pattern.

This is just crazy. This is only minutes from where I live.

I had to stop reading the comments on social media because I was getting so angry. Many people are justifying this, saying he had a right to shoot her since she was on his front porch.

Others are just saying it was nothing more than a tragic accident.

well, nothing i've heard so far points to an accident. guessing people are confusing the person's mistaken belief that the home was being invaded with the idea of an accidental death. it seems likely (if not confirmed?) that the person intentionally pulled the trigger and meant to hit whoever was on the porch. the only question is whether the circumstances justified it.

the only way this could conceivably be an accident is if the gun went off accidentally, and just happened to hit a person on the porch that the resident happened to have called in as a "home invasion" beforehand. anyone want to put money on that scenario?

Reminiscent of “The Perfect Neighbor.” I too live in Indiana~MAGA elected officials better do the right thing and make sure the shooter is charged with murder. No entry. Gunshot through the door.
—————-

Her family identified the victim as Maria Florinda Rios Perez. Her husband, Mauricio Velazquez, spoke to Fox59/CBS4 through a translator.

“For him, she was the love of his life. She was always nice,” said Velazquez. “She was a good wife and also a good mother to all four of her children.”

Velazquez was there at the time and says he held on to her until authorities arrived.

In addition to raising those four kids, Velazquez says he is now preparing to take his wife back to her native Guatemala for her burial.

This will be the attorney representing the shooter is my guess. Relford is a very outspoken proponent of the 2nd amendment
The legal practice of Guy A. Relford is devoted to the protection of Constitutional rights, focusing on the Second Amendment and Indiana gun laws.

An attorney since 1983, Guy Relford has the experience necessary to protect your legal rights in any firearm-related legal issue.

The killer is not qualified to own a gun. What can we possibly do to make ineligible for gun ownership people who have such bad judgment, hot tempers, irrational thinking, high impulsivity, and are just too stupid to own a lethal weapon!!!!! I wish we could see a picture of the cleaning crew at the door of this person's house, so we could see for ourselves just what this person saw and what they perceived to be a serious imminent threat to their very life! Unbelievably stupid tragedy.

Forgive me, but "pro-gun" and "pro-Constitution" do NOT justify this. Sorry. JMO

Here is a similar case that occurred in Detroit in 2013 involving the death of Renisha McBride- she was intoxicated and was involved in a vehicular accident - she went on up to the porch of home owner Theodore Wafer just looking for help- I think it was about 2 am. she knocked on the door and he thought it was a home invasion and shot her thru the door killing her. He was convicted and sentenced - I believe he remains in prison to this day.

There was one on WS in the last couple of years where a young lad went to the wrong house number by mistake and was shot through the front door when he rang the bell. I’m sorry I don’t recall his name. The shooter was an angry older man who tried to claim he feared for his life, when the lad had done nothing.

ETA : I think it was this case - Andrew Lester dies awaiting sentencing for shooting teen Ralph Yarl
