I would think having students sit on your lap when alone with them in the classroom (or at any other time) would be a no-no. Telling students that you would date them is another. He did both.
Yes. Both behaviors would seem to be huge red flags. They apparently couldn't prove the nefarious motive which seems obvious, but chose to call it, "poor professional judgment". An understatement. I wonder if they questioned the girls who he had on his lap?

It will be interesting to see what is on his phone/laptop/etc. I'm sure he has certain material on them. Could it lead to more arrests if he's been exchanging? Guess we'll find out.

MOO
You would think they'd find something, with what his history with little girls shows. And yes, that kind of thing could lead to other arrests.

Interesting thoughts about schools, parents, and predatory behavior

John Kelly posted an update yesterday about possible motives
He’s an old fart, probably near 80 and reminds me of my dad, I forgot he was out there sharing his insights.
He relates the moving of AJM from school to school like Charles Cullen, the serial killer nurse who moved from hospital to hospital, the Angel of Death.
A good find!

IMO

Lots of talking. Nothing concrete so far.
I would not be blaming the schools. The criminal job would be humongous; it would be reconstructing a huge quilt from patches. So all schools, structures, home town, friends, if any, everyone has to be involved. Especially since he lived so far away. Jumping to conclusions so early is not helpful. JMO.

Actually, I wonder if he went off drugs - perhaps he was on anti-psychotics and stopped taking them. I do not know if those types of prescription drugs would preclude someone from being hired. I would think so, but I am not certain. I don't even know if they test for those drugs in the panel. There are different drug testing panels, from very basic to very comprehensive.
Interesting. I wonder if employers would get a record of what other drugs, outside of illicit ones, were in someone's system. That seems like clear over reach and violations of medical records access laws.
In GA I didn't have to be drug tested for substitute teaching. Neither did I once was hired as a teacher in SC, although I realize some districts may be different.
I worked briefly for Head Start and did have to do a drug test and full background check.

I do wonder how much employers are allowed to share when given references. I know a common question is if the person is eligible for rehire. If the employer is not allowed to elaborate on this, many criminals and predators will fall below the radar. I do see where a former employer of AM did elaborate on his unsatisfactory performance.

Yes, this was my understanding all along. I'm not sure where people were getting that the dad must've had a confrontation or interaction with McGann prior to the attack.

The mother's "Why are you doing this?" question aligns with it being a sudden, random ambush style of attack.
My heart hurts. And because she took them to safety and they were able to tell other adults what happened, more people were able to place him in areas of the park and connect him to a vehicle.
Has it ever been said where the picture of him from behind came from?

This is the school where he had the insane looking photo ID. Also reported that he quit after the first day.

That's similar to a picture a woman posted of his Hinge dating profile. She said he was on there the same Saturday morning.

Maybe he considered school a dating pool.

Honestly I think part of the problem is that a lot of the incredibly creepy behavior described is super inappropriate and raises a lot of red flags, but none of it as described rises to a level that it could go on a child abuse registry. It's not child abuse to give candy to girls or let elementary school children sit on your lap. "Poor professional judgment" might have been the best they could do to send a flag to the next school. At that point it's up to the new school to call and ask for a reference. And if they're hiring a ton of new teachers, they might not have taken the time to do that for all of them.

I will say, I have a niece with a young male teacher and while the teacher is professional and creates boundaries and teaches all the students equally, the little girls are all totally obsessed with him and have crushes on him. I can see how someone with bad intentions could try to play some of the inappropriate behavior off as something that the girls started that he failed to respond to properly. To be clear, I don't think that is true, but it strikes me as a way that a young new teacher with bad intentions might obscure what's going on and create some doubt in the mind of the person firing him.

I hope someone does some kind of investigation to figure out whether everything that should have been reported was reported and whether there were warning systems between schools that were ignored or failed and need to be tweaked.

It looks like he has the case of a resting b**** face if he uses the same expression on his dating profile and booking photo.
There are other pictures of him smiling, but not recently.

IMO It’s too early to be armchair diagnosing CTE or mental illness.
Some people are just evil.

Some people are just evil. There may be nothing beyond antisocial personality disorder.
Then when/how did he become evil if he was normal before?

I think there is a lot of speculation on the child predator angle. I still don’t think you go to a state park to abduct children. He is 28 right? He looks almost 10 years younger in totally appearance. He has a boy like physique which may have led to children being extra friendly to a vice-versa.
A lot of what I’m hearing or lack of hearing describes Arrested Development (not the TV show)
BUT, this general condition doesn’t describe why he went through this final act. AD does not directly cause violence. That is totally different threshold. This condition isn’t even a diagnosis. It is a broad painting and can manifest itself to other social problems.
-lack of relationship. Not ability to start one but keep one.
-sometime it can be caused by overbearing parents who limit the growth of the individual. (Did he move all the way to Oklahoma to be his own individual?)
It would explain a lot how he was perceived with his interactions with children (especially girls). People with AD don’t develop emotionally into adulthood. Some are completely stunted or appear frozen in growth.
Some with AD struggle with impulsivity and have trouble with high pressure situations often overreacting like a child would.
On the outside, AM showed signs of wanting validation. He said the right things as a teacher when he joined new staff locations. It sound like he was saying the right things to the students to become liked even if it wasn’t professional. It sound like he lacked the skills to command a classroom. AD may present as poor problem-solving skills. People with AD can have a problem with accountability. I remember some of the parents said he became very “standoffish” over time.
I think this phenomenon is not given enough attention. It isn’t a necessary label like other conditions. It does not have a icd code.

I like to hear other opinions on this. I’m trying not to over analyze everything thing in this case . Again just trying to use what we know on the surface.

His favoritism consisted of giving candy and drinks only to girls; helping students, but only girls.

I don’t know how he came across to teachers, but perhaps, “mentally, not more mature than his students”? But we are reading tea leaves at this phase.

My main point is, before we accuse the schools of anything, why don’t we try to get more information from his teacher colleagues? Schools?

It might be not his first crime, and he lived in another area, too. At this phase, accusing schools is nothing but counterproductive. IMHO.

Look into personality disorders, particularly ASPD. Personality disorders, unfortunately, run in my family. It is a combination of genetic and environmental factors, along with possible brain chemistry abnormalities. I'm not sure why he killed this couple. Maybe he just enjoyed inflicting pain. No voices, no brain damage, just a pure lust for blood. Of course, all speculating, I really don't know

Might be part of a broader problem, too.

Does anyone happen to know his height and weight?

From his first year of teaching (2022/23, Donald Elementary School):

Marcum said her son voiced several concerns.

“Just that he didn't manage the class very well, kind of let them run crazy,” Marcum said.

Marcum said several students noticed that McGann would often pay "special attention" to some girls in the class and keep them back in the class during recess for what her son described as "one-on-ones."

"When they would come back from recess, he would have the little girl on his lap," she said.

I saw that, and evidently he resigned in early May, so he nearly got by with this for an entire year. Unimaginable for little girls to go to school each day wondering if they were going to be the one to get candy to sit on his lap.

What is so odd about this- is these were 5th graders, not 2nd graders.
I would think 5th graders would understand, at age 10, 11 that they were a bit too big it sit on a teacher’s lap.
It is mind blowing to me, what did he do to keep those kids from clueing in their parents earlier in the year? How did he keep those fathers from paying him a visit?

Creepy behavior isn’t that subtle for women to notice in a man, he was incredibly sneaky to get by with such obviously inappropriate looking behavior for such a long time.

Parents everywhere are going to take more notice, I hope admins and teachers do as well. A huge chasm of a loophole is being highlighted and these murders and the five days to catch him means this is on national news.

The sick 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
IMO

Yes. If he was an emotional immature straight male, his behavior with young girls would make sense. From the sounds of it, he was seeking their approval. I could imagine some of boys in class could be resentful to this. Sounds really like he tryed to be the “cool” teacher but didn’t have the necessary tools. He also chose a profession that on the surface appears to be “easy” job.

Yes, arrest records showed he is 6’ and 180lbs.
He isn’t stunted.

I also believe his parents live in OK, not sure when they moved from the Chicago area.

Btw, I know many teachers that do give candy out in elementary school. It is a common practice.

I think his lap-sitting incidents were reported in his first year of teaching in Texas. He might have become more sneaky afterwards.

Even if little girls wanted to sit on his lap, it would be inappropriate to let them. He was the adult.
