It does seem something more than just simple coincidence, that his victims had 2 little girls in this age range with them.
The attack on the mom was to get rid of a witness, imo.
Thinking more too along these lines, I wonder if his motivation for the anwful attacks and murders he committed was driven in part by a new lack of willingness to move between schools or states from then on. Just speculation, but perhaps his behavior escalated because he decided against leaving behind any potential witnesses or survivors who could report him later, resulting in another job he would have to resign from or not expect to work for the term or year after. Under this hypothetical, unfortunately not even the girls, if one or both were the targets, would survive the assault afterwards as he would have also horribly robbed them of their lives as well to protect his identity and freedom.
Furthermore, perhaps if in theory he did he target one of the daughters or chose the park to target and prey on more victims, he did so because he wanted potential victims he had no personal connection or relationship to, unlike before when he preyed on girls at his own school, thus further adding to his anonymity and, in his mind, making it harder for LE to easily identify him and tie him to the crimes. Just my own speculation and of course I could be wrong.
How many little girls hike, let alone alone, on these trails? How would he think he'd have able to abduct the girls with a knife in the middle of a well visited park while dealing with the parents? And why didn't he bother to chase after the girls?
Just my own speculation, but I think it is possible he originally planned to abduct or attack a child when they were if not necessarily alone, at least out of direct sight of their parents, guardians or other adults such as what happened in the terrifying caee of Charlotte Sena in 2023, the Evansdales murders that occurred in 2012, the Delphi case of 2017 and that of a 11 years old girl biking in park in Queens with her father.
I think it is also possible that he intended to chase the daughters but the brave mom and dad up such a fight they both helped the girls escape and deterred him from continuing further as the risk of getting caught increased. Just my own theory though and could be wrong
