The black thing around the neck looks like a large black scarf, bot a facemask or one of those colling collars.

This could be something you would wrap around whatever you intended to put in the duffel bag, so it wouldn't be visible or draw attention.
Why would a guy carry a scarf? Strange.

The smaller backpack thing in the photo reminds me of a Camelbak (hydration pack).

Good eye. Yes, they are two separate pieces. And both seem to be empty or close to being empty.

So on a summer day in July, he goes to a park wearing black long sleeves and black long pants and carrying two sturdy black bags.

For what reason?

I've had a nagging feeling the father was protecting his family against someone creepy and I feel it even more now. imo

Perhaps after the attack he took off the blood stained clothes and put them in the bag. Maybe he had a tank top and shorts underneath.

In July!!

I feel uncomfortable just looking at the photo and thinking how hot he must have been.

I don't know what his plans were, but that man brought stuff with him to carry out plans. imo

A big, sturdy duffle and backpack for discarded clothes?

It looks like he is wearing a backpack and a duffel bag. If you zoom in you can see the duffel bag strap around his shoulder. The backpack straps are separate.

The square blue thing by the top of the backpack could be a logo or photo on the piece of clothing. It doesn't have to be part of the backpack itself. It's also slightly asymmetric as compared to the top of the pack, making me think it isn't attached.

I admit, that's where my mind went right away.

:(

Assuming he was after one child, why take on two parents? And, even a 7 yr old seems heavy to run and carry to his car, especially a child yelling and screaming.

But it looks like the bag is (mostly) empty. THAT, in itself is a little weird. The style of "backpack" is also very weird.. like a 1980s gym bag.

Also, if you zoom in it almost looks like his shoes are crocks. I would never hike in something like that.

Maybe, that is why the couple said he stood out very oddly. They said he gave them both a long uncomfortable side stare when they passed each other.

Another oddity probably not at all related or accurate, but the suspect's sketch... the nose... looks very similar to David's... Again, just an observation.

I believe you are 100% correct. Both a backpack and a duffel bag. I'm amazed they got such a clear/close photo of him.

I wonder if the backpack is a hydration backpack?

Agreeing with others that the duffel bag looks mostly empty (worn cross-body across his back), looks like a jacket or pullover tied around his waist, and that the shoes look possibly like water shoes of some kind.

His hair looks pretty clean cut (except it's hard to see the hairline because of the scarf or gaiter around his neck).

Also, that outfit/gear looks hot/heavy considering hiking in Arkansas midday this past week was likely very hot.

MOO.

From your link, "Hinebauch knew the Brinks for a few years while they lived in Miles City," which is Montana. After that, they lived in Minnesota, and two weeks ago to Arkansas, where Hiland Dairy gave him a transfer. From my link below, "Hiland Dairy confirmed to the Associated Press that Clinton Brink had transferred from its parent company, Prairie Farms Dairy, from South Dakota, and was scheduled to start his job as a driver delivering milk in the Fayetteville area on Monday. The family had also previously lived in California and Montana, according to reports." I can't find dates for when they moved and how long they stayed in each place, but I'm curious as to why they wanted this move to Missouri. IMO They had to know people close by who could pick up their 7- and 9-year-old children. And that's a lot of moving IMO for a delivery job, especially when you have young school-age children. I'm rambling but I'm wondering who, nearby a place where they'd only been since the 16th, when they got their water turned on, knew them well enough to take the children? Possible this move was connected to the older child? This has me puzzled because it feels targeted and I'm trying to figure out who would target them and why. MOO.

I don’t think it’s scarf on his neck…

Maybe he wanted to shove a kid in it? The Night Stalker shoved a kid in a duffel bag. 😳

That is exactly where my mind went when I heard he had a large bag. Child abduction
I can’t think of another motive, meanness, mental illness?

Of course, we don’t exactly know BKs motive either but one can speculate.

IMO

Probably lower cost of living and perhaps more nursing job opportunities/pay than where they were before. Nursing shortage in Arkansas.

Or the other way around.

The picture was probably taken before the attack. Afterwards, he would not have been stopping much.

Yes, I believe it is a logo on the shirt.

I can’t imagine him attempting to abduct a child and spirit them away in that duffel bag.
It’s too small for any child larger than maybe a two year old and then you’ve got to control them while you get away. Of course that’s after you kill their parents.
Very strange.

Definitely a weird bag. Never seen one like it before
Looks like someone sewn the arm straps from an old backpack to a duffel bag.
